For the first time since 1994's "Republican revolution" the Democrats have taken control of the House of Representatives. Dozens of competetive races have yet to be decided but, according to NBC, the Democrats may wind up with a 30-seat lead or more.

Nancy Pelosi is likely to become the first female Speaker of the House, replacing embattled Bob Hastert, and it remains to be seen whether a Pelosi-led House will try to impeach the President.

Conyers and other House Democrats have expressed some interest. According to the Washington Post: "[they] have called for impeachment hearings into allegations that Bush misled the nation about Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction and that he violated federal law by approving warrantless wiretaps on Americans."

Pelosi has said that she supports investigations but doesn't see impeachment as a goal. Of course, that was before the election when the threat of impeachment would have been a powerful rallying cry for Republicans.

A number of upsets are sprinkled atop the Democratic takeover. Just moments ago, for example, Republican darling Melissa Hart was defeated by Democratic nobody, Jason Altmire, in Pennsylvania. Republicans Anne Northrup, Shelley Sekula-Gibbs (Tom DeLay's replacement), and Connecticut's Chris Shays were all favored to win their races as well.

***

The Democrats needed to "net" 15 seats of the 97 House races and 6 of the 17 Senate races.

As of 11:09pm EST, The House of Representatives is a Democratic body:

  1. Kirsten Gillibrand defeated John Sweeney in NY
  2. Democrat Ron Klein defeated Clay Shaw in Florida
  3. Timothy Mahoney defeated Joe Negron to take Mark Foley's seat
  4. Democrat Gabrielle Giffords defeated Randy Graf in Arizona
  5. Charles Taylor defeated by Democrat Heath Shuler in North Carolina
  6. Republican Raymond Meier went down to Mike Arcuri in New York
  7. Baron Hill defeated Mike Sodrel, Republican of Indiana
  8. Christopher Carney leads Donald Sherwood in Pennsylvania
  9. Dem Joseph Sestak beat Curt Weldon also in Pennsylvania
  10. New Hampshire Dem Paul Hodes beat Charlie Bass
  11. Ohio's Zachary Space is way ahead of Republican Joy Padgett
  12. Dem Chris Murphy beat Nancy Johnson in Connecticut
  13. Democrat Joseph Donnelly beat incumbent Chris "count" Chocola in Indiana
  14. Democrat John Yarmuth upset incumbent Anne Northrup in Kentucky
  15. Democrat Brad Ellsworth is the projected winner in Indiana's 8th District, sending the number to 14

Check back for updates!

****

Calling elections:

The AP has called the following Senate races of interest:

-Joe Lieberman-I elected in Connecticut

-Sherrod Brown-D elected in Ohio

-Debbie Stabenow-D elected in Michigan

-Robert Menendez-D elected in New Jersey

-Bob Casey-D elected in Pennsylvania

And CNN has called Rhode Island for Sheldon Whitehouse, defeating Lincoln Chafee.

And for Governor, AP has called:

Dave Freudenthal-D elected in Wyoming

Eliot Spitzer-D elected in New York

Brad Henry-D elected in Oklahoma

Ted Strickland-D elected in Ohio

Deval Patrick-D elected in Massachusetts

There are a lot more results being called, but with no brainers like Ted Kennedy and Trent Lott being the remainder, go read the rest for yourself.

Why, with the most unpopular President in history haven't we picked up more seats? For goodness sake the Republicans stole more seats from us when Clinton was in office and Clinton was one of the most popular presidents in history.

Taking the house is great but this night should have been better. We should have swept both.

This is an end to hubris and an end to Bush crony capitalism...it's not the ushering in of a new progressive era. If anything, I don't see any movement on any progressive causes in the new Dem Congress....maybe a token $1 raise in the minumum wage and that's all. To me this night is probably what V-E Day (Victory in Europe Day) felt like in the USA...a critical victory had been one but there's no time or reason to celebrate because so much more effort must still be made. Under normal circumstances I would feel estatic but I don't....any joy I feel is seeing Bush humbled/humiliated. I'm too wary of Democrats in general to feel any glee.

This is going to be a poisonous next two years and Bush is going to be like a cornered puma. He'll attempt to do what has what he knows has worked for him (at least in short cycles) in the past...invade other nations. At least it will be harder this time. We'll find out soon enough whether the new Dem majority has the spine to stop him.

it's time to send those mouth-breathing freaks another message – the idiots overwhelmingly voted yes for "marriage" only for hets, no for partner rights.

boycott colorado. you can ski in utah, california, or all over the east coast, you can mountain bike and kayak ANYWHERE for goodness sake, but boycott colorado. it worked in 1992 and it will work again (yes, it's an historical fact, look it up).

it's about damn time that liberals, progressives, and the rest of the circus under our tent decide to stop the societal acceptance of gays in the back of the bus. all of us have to sit in and stop this flagrant discrimination – sitting in today takes the form of boycotting the whole state's tourism industry and letting them know why.

I wonder if this is what it felt like . . .
Posted by: DanYHKim on Nov 7, 2006 10:44 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
We have had to endure years of seeing the America that we love become a twisted travesty of its own ideals. This wonderful nation, more a dream than a land, has become an unrecognizable mockery. It is all the more painful, when we remember the beauty and strength that it can show almost without conscious effort.

Seeing the election results coming in, I begin to feel hope again. This might be what some Germans may have felt when they first saw Allied occupation forces entering their cities: A feeling of relief and hope that the twisted nightmare of brutal Nazi power might someday be looked on as an aberration, next to a long future of renewal and redemption.

I wonder if this is what Dr. Jekyll would have felt like, after awakening from an evening as Mr. Hyde. Relief in seeing the morning light with clear eyes, followed by a horror of remembering the terrible things he had done the night before.

Sadly though, this is not a nation that had fallen victim to a terrible transformation. Instead, the same ideas that let invade Iraq, disappear innocent civilians, abandon international law and reject the humane standards of civilized people are still very much part of our flesh and bone.

Perhaps this new day should see our nation begin, as many others begin their new days, with the words:

"We admit that we are powerless over greed and corruption, and that our nation had become unmanageable . . . "

Time to get busy, brothers and sisters.........

Some non-violent things we can do, starting tonight:

VIGILS

Start vigils tonight outside politician’s offices, especially key House and Senate leaders. Demand that your state return to a paper verifiable election process. Optical scan has worked great in my precinct for years.

PROTESTS

Combine larger scale protests with the vigils. We should start with large monthly protests on the 11th of each month (and/or the second Sunday of each month). These protests can graduate to a continuous state by creating a pool of protesters who protest in shifts with a support system bringing food, etc. The eastern Europeans have shown the way here.

Use postcards to flood your elected officials with clear, concise statements of your dissatisfaction with their performance on the critical issues.

BOYCOTTS

Start with targeted boycotts of key institutions/industries, beginning with the MSM who ignore the key issues facing us. Demand that they cover these issues, give them two weeks to show that they are covering the stories we need to have covered, then if they don't cancel your subscriptions. Flood them with postcards, too. Then just shut them down by not buying what they're selling.

STRIKES

The last phase is to begin with targeted strikes, beginning with "Stay Home Sundays" in support of the Sunday protests. Then add rolling strikes in specific regions and against specific industries. Increase the frequency, size and duration of these strikes until we peacefully force the changes we have to have. Once again, flood the strike targets with postcards.

It's especially important that progressives reach out to all segments of our society, especially recent immigrants (particularly native Spanish speakers) and disaffected conservatives who are horrified by the neocons.

Let's keep it non-violent, brothers and sisters. Let others be violent and show their true colors and desperation.

Stay in the light and fight for what's right.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

Be well.

Funny, watching the news, all the talking heads are in a state of shock. I've heard the question "What do you think happened here tonight?" like 50 times. Shepard Smith said "The House is lost" like he was about to cry. I was about to cry laughin at him.

Easy answer dumbasses.

Now it is Nancy's turn to do the right thing in the House after the Bushies spent six years doing the wrong thing to our House; making the Congress into a nightmare. What a difference a day makes: now we at least have a chance to save the USA and the rest of the world from the supreme follies of the greedy and of the warmongers.

NPR Cokie Roberts comment this AM on NPR is that many of new Dem reps are moderates who Pelosi will accomodate to avoid some of them making alliance w/Repubs. So make your lists now of new reps. and see who votes to keep troops in Iraq and who may screw you on whatever your favorite issue is. For example, I think free trade is a joke. Let's see how these moderates bankrolled by big Chicago corporate lawyer Rahm Emanuel vote on protection of US workers!

These Democrat wins were stolen from Republicans

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Everyone knows these elections were stolen from Republicans to produce a Democratic House victory. The Democrats used voter suppression tactics (I know, because someone gave me a sideways glance when I walked up to my voting precinct yesterday, and I was really scared) and had the electronic voting machines rigged (I didn't get any paper receipt). And anyway, even if they weren't stolen, Americans are a bunch of idiots who don't know what they're doing, and the country is lost!!! Pelosi and the House Democrats dance with the devil and roast babies alive!!! Halliburton spelled backwards is Notrubillah, which is an obvious reference to Dick Cheney!!! We're all doomed!!! Waaaaahhhhhhh!!!! (Oh, yeah...and 9/11 was an inside job.)

No, wait...for a minute there, I thought I was a poor loser, out-of-power Leftie. Guess instead Americans want to see what Dems can do for a change. It will be interesting.

But watch out, if you are honset, unlike Joe Lieberbush, you will get swift boated by the right wing smear machine already targeting you and that now includes as one of its most bigmouth members, noneother than Chris Matthews. (what a bag of smug puke he is.).
Indeed, it's a slippery slope if the Dems don't join in the debauchery of the Bush World carnival fun house. They may even work for their money, what a boring proposition they may bring to Washington.

What Power?
Posted by: LeaderofMen on Nov 8, 2006 4:45 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The Dems will have no power to override a Presidential veto or to stop Republican filibusters in Congress.

Because they've not picked up enough seats.

Nothing much will change on the foreign front, and only SOME things MIGHT change on the domestic front.

It's all because not enough eligible voters bothered to vote, the Rethuglicans already gerrymandered their districts, and electronic voting boxes in way too many districts/precincts were run by people who have never even turned on a personal computer before.

THIS IS THE AMERICA WE LIVE IN. Imagine that. We live in the 21st century and yet we've slid backward into the early 20th with respect to our place in the world and the level of education and knowledge our voters have about important issues.

If you are cheering because the Dems picked up a few house seats, take a deep breath and see what they accomplish first before you internalize that joy.

Tee hee!

More like the dems will be doing exactly what the GOP did--getting as much power and money for themselves as fast as they can, cuz they know that in a few years, after a dem president is elected in 2008 and serves a term or two, that the majority will be just as disgusted by the dems as they were by the GOP.

Same as it ever was.

You KNOW we are not going to be seeing any decent proposed healthcare or progressive taxation legislation.
See here from the Democratic platform what they plan to do about healthcare:" They call for a 50 percent tax credit for employee health insurance paid for by small businesses, as their solution to the health-care crisis." (see http://www.slate.com/toolbar.aspx?action=read&id=2153062 ).

Gee, that sure is great! More employment based, tax credit tweaking! The Dems sure are a breath of fresh air (snicker!).

Of course what the democratic activists want is yet more identity politics "spoils" for certain racial minorities and for female yuppies and for gays. Gee, aint that great.....

And in 10 years or so, we will have another "revolution" and vote in a GOP president and congress. Yawn. And no one ever remembers what the past was. As Orwell said, who controls the past controls the future, and who controls the present controls the past.

And why is that? Cuz americans are domesticated animals. You are just machines to be controlled by the media....

Much of what we see today began in 1980 - this is just a beginning
Posted by: thoughtcriminal on Nov 8, 2006 6:33 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Who came into the White House with Reagan in 1980? Major corporate powers, Dick Cheney, the Saudi oil regime, The Bush Familly, Donald Rumsfeld, George Schultz, etc.

Who still runs the country? The same crew of wannabe fascists. The fact that Democrats control the House and Senate isn't a fact - the Corporate Robber Baron Party still has the majority.

Will we see the enactment of real global warming regulations? Will we see multibillion dollar programs for renewable energy and a removal of subsidies for the fossil fuel and energy corporations? Will we see major media ownership reforms being passed? Will we see a phased withdrawal of troops from Iraq? Will we see election laws revisited and reformed? Only if you do it yourself and pressure the Dems.

Let's be clear: the long-term goal should be to break the back of the proto-fascist corporate power system that has taken over the government, the media, and the academic system.

Votes were stolen in this election and outcomes were rigged. Sometime today you should call up your county election official (here's the list for California: County election officials and request a copy of the contract between the county and the private firm that supplied the voting machines. Ordinary citizens have to take back the media and the voting system.

Don't be fooled - the Republicans couldn't steal this latest election, though they may still steal the Senate. It would have been too obvious. The corporate powers are hoping that this 'victory' will lull the population into a false sense of security.

As pleased as I am that Democrats are finally gaining some power, I envision quite a long road ahead. Impeaching Bush would have been an option at one time, but the "Power Brokers" in Washington have complete disregard for the Constitution of our country. Impeaching Bush and actually charging him for his hideous crimes will be like catching smoke. Someone smarter than Bush (puppet that he is) will find him a loophole, or simply and arrogantly disregard the laws of our land. . .again.
I live in fear that Bush will cause yet another national disaster (I personally hold him responsible for the 9/11 "attacks") and crown himself President for Life under martial law. Perhaps just a paranoid theory, but life is stranger than fiction.
So congrats Democrats, try and fight the good fight.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER...

... is that THE math was obviously lacking last night.

Finally... Karl 'we're gonna retain both houses' Rove has got his comeuppance. The architect of most of the dirty, corrupt, anti-democratic dealings of the last two elections is finished. He's through, his 'power' as a political agent is dead and buried.

That alone is a mighty cause for celebration in my book. We should all be pleased that the smirking face of Rove has been slapped down. In all probability, but for him there might well be 2,900 soldiers still alive, 20,000+ fewer casualties and god alone knows how many Iraqi men, women and children still alive.

He bears a huge amount of responsibility for that carnage by ensuring Bush wom in 2000 and 2004.

Hypocrisy Hits Home

We will now see what the new House, and hopefully Senate, leadership can do with the healthcare crisis we have in this country. The hypocrisy of the controlling animus in the Christian Conservative movement has become all too apparent in recent weeks. That same hypocrisy pervades the positions of many of the Christian Conservatives on healthcare and medical reform. Many of the religious right, and their legislators, resist the call for universal health coverage, despite the christian motto forged by the Second Commandment, which sounds suspiciously like the Golden Rule–“Do Unto Others.”
Most of the right-wing politicians only wanted the type of healthcare reforms that strip rights from injured victims, not the reforms that increase access to good, affordable healthcare. The insurance companies have used the politicians to accomplish their goal--to save money when you are hurt or killed by the healthcare system. As the insurance lobbyists have gotten their way more and more, healthcare consumers have been left holding the empty bag. They run the system. Funny thing about the whole system is that when people realize that they might become one of the 190,000 people killed each year by hospital errors, or the 1.5 million people injured each year by medication errors, then they start realizing that their positions don’t work when applied to them personally. Beware of the laws you support today, as you may well be the victim of them tomorrow!! Let's hope that Nancy Pelosi can turn that tide in the right direction. Coalition forces have used more than 120,000 kg of dU weapons in Iraq since 2003.

This is in addition to the 2700 tonnes of dU used in the 1990-1991 Gulf War.

Depleted Uranium has a half-life of 4.5 billion years.

U.S. forces continue to use these WMD's in Iraq.

We must end this insanity ASAP.

Please contact your local House and Senate members, Speaker Pelosi and Rep. Murtha today and once a week on this issue until they ban dU weapons.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

Be well.

What makes you folks think the democrats will do all of these progressive things you're hoping they'll do? Given the past 6years (since W "took" office, he he) they've shown themselves as go-along-to-get-alongs, towing the party line and voting for warwarwar while US cities drown and its citizens die cause they can't afford the meds. Sorry, but the democrats won't do shit.

I wonder if President Gore could have stirred up the progressive support the way you have! ..... naaaah, hardly anybody has even seen "An Inconvenient Truth", and most people haven't even heard about it. Funny how there's not too much talk about the house being on fire.... Still, I would have thought there'd have been more of a landslide in all these elections-- maybe by 2008 you and all your greed and slithery sex afflicted co-horts will have done an even better job!! Looking forward to it.

And now (and especially if a Democrat gets to be Prez in two years) we get to watch all the left-wing, socialist, "counter-cultural," "independent," "activist," and "alternative" opinion sources on the Internet turn into shills for the status quo.

Let's face reality

The current GOP-controlled Congress is corrupt and embarassing, and seeing its demise is a pleasure indeed. But let's face reality: what are the Democrats going to do now that we should be excited about? Pelosi owes her high position in the party mostly to her fundraising skills. Need I go on?

The most important issue facing our nation, by at least one order of magnitude, is the war on Iraq and the greater GWOT in general. What are the Democrats going to do to change the disastrous course we're on? Yes, Congress has limited abilities in this arena as it is, and yes it's too early to pass judgement. But indications are they aren't going to do much. Our government illegally overthrew another sitting government, based on lies, and essentially took a once-prosperous nation and beat its face into the pavement until it was unrecognizable. This beating goes on every single day. The Democrats were and are complicit in it from the very beginning (the 80s); indeed the party mainstream supports it still. I'm eager to hear from true believers on this: what solutions are we going to see? I think many in the anti-war crowd are going to be disappointed if not horrified by how Iraq is handled by the new Congress.

Already there is talk about the minimum wage and stem cell research by the triumphant Democrats. Uh, these issues, on the national level, are important as Iraq? Gee whiz, six more states voted to increase the minimum wage on their own yesterday; the total is now 28. There is a crisis here? As for stem cell research, okay, funding for an already booming sector (biotech) can be increased and subsidies and regulations further tilted to support that industry. This is as important Iraq and America's dangerous global behavior?

Please.

Remains to be seen I think. The Democratic leadership - Emanuel, Pelosi, Reid, Dean, Clinton, Kerry - are all Republican Lite and cannot be trusted. They all say the same garbage about Iraq - "must change course, "must have a plan for victory", "must honor the troops" etc etc.

None of them is saying end this illegal war and occupation now, stop the dangerous and rampant militarism, reduce the insane defense budget and start taking care of the people and the planet, etc etc. They talk a slightly different game but represent the same basic interests.

One interesting prospect is that if the Dems were to go after both Bu$h and Dirty Dick, and succeed in getting them impeached, we'd have President Pelosi. Could this be a strong enough carrot to get the Dems to pursue impeachment?

Everyone posting here thinks that the world is going to stay the same for the next two years. It's not. The economy is based on monetary expansion and bubble creation. The housing boom just went bust and monetary contraction is going to be the 800 pound gorrilla in this room. Financial crisis is always near the horizon.

If you want to see a parallel, look at the congressional election of 1930. Economic issues and prohibition filled the papers, but the underlying threat of the coming Depression is what drove the voters. The Republicans lost 50 seats in Congress. I'm sure that there were plenty of nay sayers who thought that the Republicans would overcome this simple economic turndown. The media of the time didn't even see trouble coming.

So where will this leave the Dems? For starters, the public is going to be radicalized in one direction or another. The mush center will be trampled over.
