A new Republican ad is essentially repeating Dick Cheney's pre-2004 tactic: vote Democrat and your family will die!!! Twice!

ABC News writes of the latest, to be unrolled this weekend:

The ad portrays Osama bin Laden and quotes his threats against America dating to February 1998. "These are the stakes," the ad concludes. "Vote November 7."

Yes, do. ABC notes that this commercial is a part of Republican efforts to make the war on terror front and center. They're only partly right. The actual array of policies designed to keep Americans safe, known as the war on terror, is an issue that now favors Democrats. A recent poll showed that, by a margin of 46%-38%, Americans trust Democrats to keep them safe.

Making terrorism central to the GOP strategy is not about making the actual security of Americans central, it's about making the terrorizing of Americans central.

Easy mistake. Anybody coulda made it.

Just look at this survey on worldwide attitudes on terrorism. 59% of the world opposes some form of torture (CORRECTION: 58% of Americans DON'T -- originally read that 58% of Americans do...).

But here's the BBC's observation: "countries that face political violence are more likely to accept the idea that some degree of torture is permissible because of the extreme threat posed by terrorists."

Its politics. Remember LBJ's ad against Goldwater? Bush's 'Willie Horton' ad against Dukaksis? Before commercials politicians gave speeches. Some of those were more inflammatory then any ad someone would make (since the ads can be recorded and shown to others.)

The original fascists rose to power and stayed there by telling people that liberals can't protect the nation, wimps and cowards that retreat when the nation needs victories. Too bad Americans don't understand the inherently fascist politics of Bush and Cheney. Do you, Evan? Do you think this is mere demagoguery? Think again when they steal the next election, the standard technique of contemporary dictators.

I consider myself just an average citizen, born and raised right here in the good ole USA and
I am Sick of it!!!

Dragging out the Boogeyman every time things head in the wrong direction, how could these morons even believe we are so stupid as to believe it yet again. I'm not so sure they actually expect us to believe it as much as they expect to "Brain Wash" with the message repeated over and over again at every turn...

"Stay the course... The boogeyman will get you if you don't watch out, or There were weapons of mass distruction but we just can't find them..."

I tell you, it is just sickening...

If this is what hitler did to the german people I feel sorry for them because to have to keep living the same sh** every day is Really Getting OLD!

Bush is emulating Hitler to the letter! No doubts about it now. America is scared shitless. Just try and talk to one of them. Avoidance, Antagonism, Anger and then they will accuse you of supporting terrorism of all things! America is a pretty horrible place to live in today. I want to expatriate and be done with America but they are holding me prisoner in my own home by refusing to honor my Social Security payments that I worked my ass off for if I give up my citizenship! We are all prisoners in one way or another now. I hate America!

Have any of you seen the video yet? I went to the GOP website and watched it. Sure its dirty politics, but it will be effective with some voters if the Dems don't offer a counter blow. Face it. This election isn't about the individual congresspersons as much as it is about the failed policy in Iraq.

While Clinton was building a bridge to the twenty first century, The Fascists were carefully stockpiling the ammunition to blow that bridge into a million pieces. They have succeeded in not only blowing up the bridge, they have set fire to the constitution, the bill of rights and the underpinnings of our judicial system. The lies are beyond counting now, the criminality is matter of course, and young dead Americans continue to arrive home, unseen, in flag draped coffins. And as a final? gesture, Bush in the wisdom of any cheap tin horn dictator has made anyone of us sucseptable to "disapearance" by Presidential caveat. And that disapearance won't be the Rapture. We have everything to fear and ourselves to blame. A democracy has to be defended By the people from the inside, every day by vigilant and concerned citizens... we seem to have given up that fight and the shame is directly attributable to us. Only a new American revolution will throw these criminals out of power, but will it actually happen? Lets start on November 7th and see where it leads us...to the beggining of a new democratic era, or more of the same fascist governance. I live in fear. I pray for hope.
Peace on you
Dick Wagner

In the above article, the phrase:
... 59% of the world supports some form of torture (58% of Americans do) should actually read:
... 59% of the world opposes torture (58% of Americans do)
or it should say:
... 29% of the world supports some form of torture (36% of Americans do)

That's some sloppy writing...

Yes I saw it and it is pretty good at what it does. It is sad really that effective campaign videos have to simplify this much. The voters get what they deserve I suppose.

That being said, I'm sure the [Dd]emocratic side can do the same thing, jut as effectively. All you need is the vivid depiction of a Threat, and by jove, is there one!

- Frame showing Bush telling the Niger uranium lie. In big red letters diagonally across rubber-stamp style: NOT TRUE

- Frame showing Colin Powell's UN presentation. NOT TRUE

- Frame showing the Abu Ghraib "Statue of Liberty". Voice-over Bush: "America does not torture..." NOT TRUE

- Frames showing Cheney claiming links between Saddam and al-Qaeda. Several such statements, progressively more weasely. NOT TRUE

- Frame sequence showing mayhem in Iraq. On top, the famous Göring pronouncement, scrolling as a German-accent English voice reads it (with a cynical chuckle at the end!):

"Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in
England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood.
But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy
and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a
democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a parliament or a communist
dictatorship."

[...]

"[...] voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding
of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are
being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and
exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

-- Hermann Goering to Gustave Gilbert at the time of
the Nuremberg trials, April 18, 1946

- Final frame: Capitol Hill [tacky, I know, but works!], with red rubber stamp NO MORE LIES. Voice-over: "Let's take back our great nation. Tuesday November 7, 2006."

.. remember exactly which party failed to capture or kill Osama Bin Laden AFTER 9-11 though they launched an entire war just to do so. Remember who said "Osama bin Laden; dead or alive".. and later said "I don't know where he is. He is unimportant".

We are not ALL that stupid.

From the blog: "(CORRECTION: 58% of Americans DON'T -- originally read that 58% of Americans do...)"

What's the source of information for the above correction to the BBC survey results?
