Support our troops, feed their kids:

As the Iraq war marches toward its fourth anniversary, food lines operated by churches and other nonprofit groups are an increasingly valuable presence on military bases countywide. Leaders of the charitable groups say they're scrambling to fill a need not seen since World War II.

Too often, the supplies run out before the lines do, said Regina Hunter, who coordinates food distribution at one Camp Pendleton site.

“Here they are defending the country. . . . It is heartbreaking to see,” said Hunter, manager of the on-base Abby Reinke Community Center. “If we could find more sources of food, we would open the program up to more people. We believe anyone who stands in a line for food needs it and deserves it.”

The base's list of recipients swells by 100 to 150 people a month as the food programs streamline their eligibility process, word spreads among residents and ever-proud Marines adjust to the idea of accepting donated goods.

Ways to help
People interested in donating food, furniture or money to help military families in San Diego County can call:

  • Military Outreach Ministry at Camp Pendleton: (760) 908-7043
  • Military Outreach Ministries at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station: (619) 843-8964

I will never understand man's inhumanity to man. That Soliders spouses have to stand in line for food is an abomination while the chickenhawks have it deleivered to thier door. They are spending millions to stay in power but not one dime to feed the hungry. If they were smart rhey would give to the military familes dollar for dollar and then we might beleive them.I do not have much but I will do what I can.

You mean to tell me that the u.s. armed services don't pay a livable wage??? Maybe the question is naive, but this shocks me to the core ... that these families are torn apart and sometimes destroyed by a government so callous as not to provide for basic needs! I'm horrified. I don't even know what else to say, except that I'm going to forward this story to my representatives in government because this is JUST WRONG.

This is an illegal pre-emptive war of aggression. If these soldiers understood the difference between right and wrong they would have refused deployment to Iraq. I'll support the families of any soldier who refuses deployment, but those who have served or are serving in Iraq, let someone who supports illegal wars and war criminals (Abu Graib, etc.) support them. Don't underestimate how angry I am about this war and the people who make it possible.

The purpose of power is power, nothing else. So, it does not surprise me that our troops, our veterans are being neglected. The function of the Bush military is to extend power. Other than that, they have no purpose, are not human. It is incredibly offensive that the Bush admin has sacrificed so many many people, in and out of the military, when, in the end, his house simply crumbles.

This is the ultimate insult to those in danger of making the ultimate sacrifice.

The moral compass points to murder and torture plain as day. I cannot feel anymore for people who will kill for money no matter how little it may be. I would scrub bathroom floors in WALMART before becoming what can only be termed a beast. Every soldier knows what Iraq is about and it is unGodly! I support military that defend the peace and call this Iraq crap for what it is. There are too few.
