Umm, so, it looks like Saddam Hussein's trial is scheduled to end on November 5 -- otherwise known as two days before Election Day. Not only will the verdict come in on that Sunday, but sentencing will be handed down that day as well.

If I'm Saddam, I'm shitting bullets. Unless of course he's insane enough to believe that the Bush Admin had nothing to do with this auspicious timing.

Or, auspicious re-timing, as the case may be:

That trial adjourned July 27 to allow its five-judge panel to consider a verdict. The court was to have reconvened Monday to hear a verdict.

"The Dujail trial will resume Nov. 5 when the presiding judge will announce the verdict and the sentencing," Juhi said.

Not so sure its going to be that cut and dried. Foreign observers following the Dujail trial say the prosecution has handled things so badly they may not have put together a convincing case against Saddam...that Saddam actually ordered the torture and killings following the assassination attempt against him in Dujail. That has been one reason for the long dealy in coming up with a verdict. Secondly, it's highly unlikely that, even if guilty, he would be executed prior to the Kurds getting their hearing--which could take another half year; and after them, the Shiites still want justice for the slaughter of hundreds of thousands following the failed uprisings of 1991. It's even conceivable we could still be watching Saddam on the tube long after George W. has gone his way. tune in to http://barrylando.com

personally, i don't believe in coincidence. further, i have had a sneaking suspicion that just before the next presidential election, some "person or persons unknown" will assassinate bush, thereby leaving us at the mercy of the big dick, who will then declare martial law and halt the election. i don't think i'm the only one who has pondered this scenario. given the current state of republican popularity, what with mark foley draining his boils on their parade, they need some kind of big wag to distract us at the polls in november.

I'm not convinced Saddam is the surprise. I think it will be a national Republican sweep delivered by the electronic voting machines.

The Diebold theft unfortunately wouldn't surprise anyone. Since we're dabbling in conjecture here, how about this scenario?

They have bin Laden in custody and are just waiting for the right time to produce him, i.e. Monday, October 30th. Plenty of time for even the most uninterested voter to hear about it before the election.

...Repugs keep Congess! If you have paid any attention to Bush and his lackeys in the past few days their smug arrogant "talking points" about retaining power can only be based on their "inside job" knowlege about what will happen. The worse option is nuclear attack on Iran and marshall law in the USA.
