The "4 percent panic attack" strikes again. This time it's the number of "Bible believers" we'll have in this country if the next generation of evangelicals isn't kept in the fold.

The Times' Laurie Goodstein writes of prominent pastors' latest nightmare:

Their alarm has been stoked by a highly suspect claim that if current trends continue, only 4 percent of teenagers will be 'Bible-believing Christians' as adults. That would be a sharp decline compared with 35 percent of the current generation of baby boomers, and before that, 65 percent of the World War II generation.

The very same numbers were at the fingertips of Becky Fischer, the youth pastor featured prominently in Jesus Camp.

If I'm a consultant for evangelicals, here's what catches my eye right off: Upon informing Goodstein that the 2 million teens he's performed for exceeds Paul McCartney's haul over the past 15 years, Teen Mania founder Ron Luce "bound[s] onstage for the opening pyrotechnics and a prayer."

When competing for today's teens, Paul McCartney references may not be your ideal yardstick.

But keeping with the 4% doctrine, it was curious that Dr. James "Focus on the Family" Dobson brought up that very number at last month's Stand for the Family Rally.

Only he was referring to the number of Muslims who want to kill us:

"We are at war in this country with an enemy who wants to destroy us," he said. He stressed that only a small minority of Muslims believe that their faith justifies violence, "but let's say 4 percent of Muslims want to kill us ... . That's 48 million people who want to bring us to our knees."

To hear the religious right properly, then, we're headed for a battle in which 4% of "bible believing" Christians do battle with 4% of murderous Muslims. Sounds like a fair fight.

How do I know who's who in this fight. I might want to move.
Thanks, ANNA

Sounds like a great war, but where will we hold it? Antarctica might work. No Ozone, no collateral damage, no Big Macs. Before it starts, get out of the National Guard.

They'll kill each other off and 92% of us can live in peace.

I think we should get behind this idea.

No, really. Hear me out here. Now, what we could do... it could be like a new reality TV show, except with live gladitorial combat.

We could do all kinds of crazy match-ups. Gun vs. knife, cage matches, tag teams, couples matches... the possibilities are endless. Of course, you have to go real big for each season finale, and also keep it fresh. I think we could really go far with this idea.

.....Of clearing off the gullible, miltant, shallow scum when it rises to the top of the gene pool.

The more wingnuts there are running the show, the more death and destruction they will bring down on us. Sure, there's "collateral" damage, but overall it's the gullible who believe governemnt and religion know something they don't, the militants who sign up for battle, and the shallow who wave their patriotic offspring goodbye...for the last time.

I can't wait for the 4% War to begin! And as someone already said, the rest of us can then live in peace. Could they possibly do the fighting in Texas?

I am sure Dobson and the Shrub will lead the charge into battle, just as I am sure their kids are leading the battle in Iraq.

My small mind is no match for the terrific responses and replies posted above. I am truly laughing...but...it sadly isn't so funny when the outcome will be so serious. Humorously speaking, I love it and won't even attempt to one-up anyone!

I'm 15 and was raised Catholic. It was enough to the point that
I've thought for the past 5 years that the Bible is just the biggest book of fairy tales there is. Or, at least, the best-selling fairy tales book. Those 4%ers can go ahead and kill each other in their argument over whose imaginary friend is better (sorry religious members).
