Pam Spaulding is a brave woman. She regularly delves into the muck at the Free Republic to see that the Freeper response is to various issues, which inevitably yields a collection of gross lunacy that makes one contemplate whether most of the traffic to the Free Republic emanates from asylums for the criminally insane. Having been reading The Blend for two years now, almost nothing in Pam's regularly culled Freepi twaddle manages to surprise me anymore, but I was particularly disgusted by what she found in response to a wholly inoffensive story about coming out to one's kids which aired on KNBC-4 in Los Angeles.

Within two comments, the rabid nutwits had already invoked bestiality -- "Next, 'How to tell your children you're into beastiality" and "How to tell your children you're a Democrat.'" -- and it only went downhill from there.

"Here's how: Hi, kiddies. I value my own sexual fulfillment more than I value your health and happiness, or the personal integrity involved in keeping my marital vows to your [choose one: mother/father/whatever]. Sh*t happens, and this is just the beginning of yours. I love you, though, just not enough to sacrifice anything for you. Efficient, accurate -- how hard is that?"

"First, you shouldn't have gotten married in the first place, you sick f*@#@. Second, wait until they are at least 18 to tell them. Third, live the rest of your life ashamed at your deception to your spouse all those years. Fourth, just because you are gay, doesn't give you any special license to break any other rules of decency. Fifth, now go whine in a corner by yourself about how straight people hate you."

"Start carrying an ...Equal Rights for Sodomites...sign."

"Show thwm [sic] your AIDS report."

"The simple answer to these is the same as the answer to the original question: In your suicide note."

Pam's got more -- if you can stomach it -- at the link.

This is the ugly face of the Bush base, the 35% or so who support him no matter what, because national security, the economy, education, jobs, all pale by comparison in importance to harassing and marginalizing People Who Aren't Like Them -- an endeavor which Bush is ever too happy to indulge, because, you know, he's a Uniter.

Bush's knuckle-draggers offer their usual "insight."

The nail has been hit dead center on the head. The small percentage of Americans spouting their bullshit about "If you're not like us, you don't deserve to be treated right". It is as if the mega-rich, who control the media, are running a campaign to take over and put the rest of us into indentureship. And guess what? It seems to be working. They've taken good jobs, held by good people and shipped them overseas so that a person who made $50k last year is now making minimum wage this year. They are encouraging us to go deeper and deeper into debt. To what end? The next thing you know, they will control everything, including where you live, where you will work and the only thing they will care about is where they can bury your deseased, malnourished body.

he has all the classic symptoms. please read ALICE MILLER FOR YOUR OWN GOOD. she tells how HITLER, STALIN and others suffered as children and became monsters as adults. LETS INTEND HIS HEALING and healing for all of those abused as children by family members or others. the mother and father or caregiver with the switch, belt or stick is the one who created ROVE, BUSH, CHENEY ... ALTERNET PLEASE INTERVIEW ALICE MILLER.

I am as appalled as anyone at the level of support Bush continues to receive, but it is utterly inaccurate and un-useful to conflate the hate speech of those cited into assumptions about the state of mind or opinions of ALL the 35% who support the GOP. I know plenty of people who are still supporting the GOP. There is a lot of ignorance there about history, about people whose lives don't look like theirs, and about what's going on outside our borders. But the kind of gutter hatred for gays and others cited by the writer is not a common feature. In fact, what is most disturbing is the blandness and calmness with which many support the White House's policies.

It is way too easy, and very counter-productive, to simply vilify the opposition. Change comes through dialogue. If we believe this about external forces such as Islamists, then how much more should we believe this about those we disagree with within our own country.

The left should not buy into simplistic generalizations about GOP supporters. Individuality and diversity exists among conservatives and even reactionaries, it is not a mindless horde. That means it will take courage and hard work, not potshots, to effect social change.

The majority of my family has lived in Texas for generations. I don't. The majority of my family supports Bush to this very moment because of three very important reasons: Bush is a Christian. Bush is a Texan. Bush is a Republican.

You see, my family, despite the continuous string of scandals and management disasters the administration has foisted on the country and the world abroad, doesn't care about reality. They ONLY care about the fact that Bush is a Christian, Bush is a Texan, and BY GOD, Bush is a Republican.

Because of these three points I have had to distance myself from my family. I'm not allowed to point out any of Bush's faults. I'm not allowed to point out that he's not really a Republican, but rather a neocon puppet. I'm not allowed to point out that he's not really a Christian either. Or maybe he is. Because I'm beginning to see that a 'real' Christian hates everything that is 'other'. Like my family.

The other really bothersome part of this Christian blindness is this. I'm the only gay person in the family. My siblings say they don't care about that. But they can't have it both ways. They can't support Bush who is insistent on playing to his Christian base - by supporting an Amendment to the Constitution to bar one of their family members from full rights as an American - and at the same time tell me that 'it's okay that you're gay'. Like I need their approval anyway. Sheesh.

So, unfortunately, I've seen first hand what Bush's base is really like. They're Christians first and foremost. They believe in mythology first and reality dead last. They can somehow ignore the cognitive dissonance of having a fascist leader who reviles gay Americans, have a family member who is part of his sphere of hatred, and still love that man.

Unfortunately, I've seen first hand what it's like to be related to people who think Bush is Christlike. Really? He has nothing whatsoever to do with Christianity. My relatives don't care about the reality of the situation. It's simply good enough that Bush SAYS he's Christian.

Unfortunately, I've seen first hand what ignorance of reality brings. My relatives have to lie to me to say they 'accept' me, while supporting an entire governmental structure that disdains my very existence. The administration plays to their base. Karl Rove has taught the administration very carefully how to do this. Their base is easily led because they'll believe anything (eg, talking snakes, the earth is 6000 years old, triune god, savior like mythology, etc). My relatives believe them because the administration talks with authority. Just like their church does.

Bush's base, for me, is a bizarre set of people. Reality doesn't matter. Lies are triumphant in their minds. Beliefs are paramount. Evidence is irrelevant. It's enough to drive me crazy.

programmed ignorance and hatred

sorry yall - i get a little wraped up in conversations of ignorance and hatred. i keep banging the alice miller drum because i think her work is seminal. these works: the drama of the gifted child, for your own good and breaking down the wall of silence clearly outline how culturallly accepted ideas of childrearing can create a nation of people who do what they are told and give all their power to authority. the only way to ensure this type of alliegiance is to assault children mentally and physically. surely many survivors become amazing kind and wonderful people - but those, miller points out, have had some interaction during their childhood in which some ONE interceded to give them love and affection and make sure they knew they were unique and important. this saves minds, lives and quite literally this planet. for those of you who cannot acknowledge this clear connection, please check out one of her books. if one cannot confront a nation (our nation and previously germany, argentina and so many others) that will torture and murder others ... then perhaps in ones own childhood one was taught be obedient and accept every authority. i need to be honest with this planet -- lets heal this bad thinking at its very roots. may we all blossom and be well as we reach out to every child with love.
