I attended a preview screening of Jesus Camp last night (trailer right) and walked away with a pit in my belly every bit as unsettling as intended.

The documentary follows several young children as they progress through a summer of conservative Christian indoctrination as beautiful as it is insidious.

Youth pastor Becky Fischer's "Kids on Fire" summer camp is beautiful in the sense that Fischer has a preternatural sense both for what young children are seeking (love, acceptance, comfort in a confusing world) and how to reach them (this generation is visual. Fischer uses Ken and Barbie, sticky hands, jello brain molds, and powerpoint)

What one comes away with is the overwhelming sense that there is another America; an America that occupies a completely different reality with which no dialogue is possible.

But just as progressives chide those who simply label Al Qaeda or any other terrorists as "evil" without attempting to rationally understand the irrationality they represent, Progressives must look into the heart of this growing Army of God and put aside fear and anger for understanding and compassion.

Look for a Q&A on AlterNet soon...

***

To Revspitz in comments who quotes the Bible to show that homosexuality is a sin:

You REALLY don't want to go down that road.

Your Bible quoting may work with those who have no theology and no understanding of their own religion but that's not the case here. PEEK has an abiding love for the Bible and for religion and thus does not cotton to hateful misuse of a book which can, according to Rabbi Hillel, be summed up as: "What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour. This is the whole Torah; all the rest is commentary."

So, here goes. You're stuck between a rock and a hard place (no pun intended). Either you take every word as the word of God or you accept that the Bible is a flawed translation, heard by frail human ears, filtered through frail human understanding and written by the limpest of human hands.

The same Leviticus you quote (and on which much anti-gay bigotry relies) also states that it's okay to sell your daughter into slavery. Leviticus 21:7

21:7 And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.
It also states in 20:10 that adulterers should be put to death (were we to abide by that one, a goodly number of gay-hating politicians would be unable to vote):
20:10 And the man that committeth adultery with [another] man's wife, [even he] that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
Exodus 35:2 states that those who work on the Sabbath shall be put to death:
35:2 Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.
So what's really going on here? Do we accept that the flawed human minds that received the word of God were hopelessly trapped in their historical contexts and that we, as evolving humans, must therefore use our God-given gift of intelligence and compassion to update the word of God?

Or do we go down the road you suggest and cherrypick the parts of the Bible that support our own fears while dismissing those that we feel we've gotten past? Beware: this choice forces you to dismiss the word of God which, in your conception is immutable.

Your choice.

Digg!

We need to protect children from religion

It's amazing that Americans allow children to be indoctrinated into religion. Children are too young to protect themselves from psychological coercion, which most religious "teaching" is all about.

Primitive cults such as conservative Catholicism and fundamentalist Protestant sects are especially dangerous to the children as individuals and to society in general.

Still, there is little hope this madness will be halted anytime soon.

As Rabbi Michael Lerner is arguring; progressivism is bereft of any values save economic values. Let's all join him in putting spiritual values in our movement.
This (spiritual values) is what is drawing Americans into the mega-churchs.

Evan Derkacz was unable to stand back and assess the "pit in my belly" as witnessing phenomena
which is every bit as unsettling as Hitler Youth movements must have been to Germany.

"What one comes away with is the overwhelming sense that there is another America; an America that occupies a completely different reality with which no dialogue is possible."

They don't occupy a "completely different reality", they're creating a world of mind control not based on reality but on mindless mechanical obeyance and parroting of "Jesus Talk". They're reality is found in their instructor's eyes and switch. They pledge alligiance to a flag with another symbol on it not unlike a Swastika!

"But just as progressives chide those who simply label Al Qaeda or any other terrorists as "evil" without attempting to rationally understand the irrationality they represent, Progressives must look into the heart of this growing Army of God and put aside fear and anger for understanding and compassion."

This is not an "Army of God", it is an army of Jesus Freaks created by dangerous power-hungry adults. Yes, I understand them. They are to be feared if they grow up to occupy positions of power. And I certainly understand the irrationality that is terrorism but adamantly feel that creating an "Army of Jesus Freaks" will not save us from random acts of terror. Terrorism has no qualifications for logical understanding beyond the knowledge that they kill to achieve power. This act must be returned in kind.

Derkacz's diatribe is blatant propaganda for Neo-Christians.

Look, I'm agnostic, but it is ludicrous to think you can shield kids from religious faith. The majority of American adults are religious, they believe in their chosen deity and particular denomination. As such they are going to instill those same values on their children, it is unavoidable.

Any attempts to subvert this will only cause a backlash that results in more recruitment for the GOP. Instead of judging people whose beliefs we don't hold, try embracing them instead.

BTW, in case it wasn't evident, I'm sure the right wing is quick to notice that we're so ready to accept homosexuals, but when it comes to religion many of us take a very discriminatory approach. That is terrible hypocrisy.

I saw it at Tribeca earlier this year. The idea of pre-teens talking on tongues or going to strangers in bowling alleys telling them that "Jesus has a plan for you" reminded me of a cult.

What about capitalism camp?

The whole freaking country, from the schools to the billboards to the workplaces to the popular culture, is ONE HUMONGOUS CAPITALISM CAMP!!! When will the left learn to keep its eyes on the fucking ball, and stop falling for this game of hide the scary right-wing "christian"? There HAVE ALWAYS BEEN strange and frightening points of view in this country... ever hear of SLAVERY, for pete's sake?

I'm just so tired of the scared ninnies who don't know anything about the churches in their own town (which if you are in a "blue state" are most likely involved in social justice issues from a progressive point of view), and go apeshit over every story about places like this.

There is nothing more scary about this camp than about the fact that most ADULTS believe that Saddam ordered 9/11. Or that so few of us know anything about the way our society actually works.

So some people want their kids to be christians, and some want them to be vegetarian crystal gazers, and some want them to believe that we are all nothing more than chemical accidents with pathetically short life spans. So fucking what? Justice is achieved through collaboration, bridge-building, and grassroots organizing around specific, local grievances, not by running around like chickens every time someone says something that scares you. Grow the fuck up, or just stop saying you're seriously interested in social change.

As an educator, I've never seen a more obscene form of religious indoctrination full of anger and intolerance than in that short movie trailer.

Those poor kids.

I know in my heart that religion serves a comforting purpose in the lives of millions of people. Christianity is one of those religions. It is my belief that "true Christianity" is no less a non rational way of believing than any minor Christian cult such as "KIds On Fire". Children are the most impressionable of us all and are easily molded by promises of Heaven, thought pictures of the Garden of Eden, imaginary resurrections and other mythical scenarios from the "Word of God". There is very little defense against such indoctrination and so the takeover of our society begins in infancy. Our only hope is through legislation that guarantees separation of state and religion. To this end, we are falling into the arms of the "Holier than Thou" movement in our government. A very frightening time for all rational beings. And with no chance of real discourse with a non rational thought system, there will be no chance of national enlightenment.

What You Left Out

What you didn't say was that Christians believe that when Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins, he set us free from the old laws you describe, those of the Old Testament. The New Testament does not command us to do any of what you have quoted from Exodus. The first (and most important) commandment from the New Testament is to love our neighbors as ourselves. Maybe you should read the WHOLE Bible and not just pick and choose what you like to fit the point you're trying to make.

What they didn't show in this trailer was what followed getting the kids all wound up. The leader asked if they loved Jesus and of course they answered we love Jesus. He repeated 3 or 4 times before moving on to will you serve Jesus and of course they answered we will serve Jesus.

By now the kids were really riled up, filled with lots of emotion, rolling on the floor, shaking, babbling with their eyes seemingly rolled back when the leader asked, "Will you kill for Jesus?" and they answered "We'll kill for Jesus." He prodded them on and on until they were screaming from the rooftops that they'd kill for Jesus.

I ask you, how is this any different from a radical Muslim school? How is this any different from the Hitler Youth? I taught summer church camp for almost 15 years and all we ever talked about was how much Jesus loved all of us, even the sinners and the ones who hated us. We didn't teach hate.

Judgment Day as God told me it will be...

On Judgment day all the souls will stand before God to be judged and rewarded. God calls forth Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, James Kennedy, Jimmy Swaggart, Fred Phelps, Ron Parsley, James Dobson and all their hate-mongering lemmings to be judged. God asks Pat Robertson to speak for this group of "christians". Robertson cries out to God, "Lord! Lord! We have done Your will on earth and have come to collect our rewards." God appears angry and pulls out a scroll. On this scroll are the names of the hundreds of thousands of gay people that left His Church because these bigots drove them away. He hands the scroll to Robertson and suddenly the scroll begins to bleed blood all over him. God speaks. "YOU Robertson, Falwell, Swaggart, Kennedy, Dobson, Parsley, Phelps and all your followers have the blood of all these lost souls that you have driven away from My Church on your hands!" Robertson exclaims, "But LORD haven't we done Your will?" God shouts out to the fundamentalist group: "DEPART FROM ME!!! I NEVER KNEW YOU!!!" God then motions to His ArchAngel Michael and Michael rounds them up and marches all of the hate-mongers into the Lake of Fire. Because these bigots drove gays away from His Church, God blesses the gay souls saying, "The meek shall inherit the earth. This is your reward." And all the good souls live in His paradise forever and ever. Amen. ...as told by Michael Prah

The Clash of Fundamentalisms
Posted by: yellow on Sep 16, 2006 7:45 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Tariq Ali has hit the nail on the head! We have PRECISELY a clash of fundamentalisms, Christian and Islamic. Both are equally fanatical and use children to brainwash as their future. The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world! This is the core wisdom of the age. All during the immediate aftermath of 9/11 we heard about the "evil Madrasses" and how they brainwash the youth of the Muslim countries to hate. Now some redneck fatass clerico-fascist asks a group of hysterical and tearful children, "Who wants to die for Jesus?" Is this at all different from the mindless cries of Allahu Akhbar! of young suicide bombers before they complete their deadly mission? One of the women leading the children referred to "our enemies" in Palestine inculcating the youth. Is it the same circumstances and life experiences that generate small town US clerico-fascism and Palestinian desparation. How many of these little Jesus Camp kids watched the Israeli army bulldoze their house without due process? How many watched a friend or loved one die at a check point in the sweltering heat for lack of being allowed access through to get to a hospital for the treatment of a serious wound? How many live under the humiliation of a four decade long occupation and all it implies? How dare this dumbass redneck even mention Palestine in connection with US clerico-fascism when ours is not a reaction to oppression but a form of it?!

The women leading the kids notes that the world we live in is sick. This is true and Jesus Camp is part of the problem NOT the solution! All these councillors and teachers do is teach hate and intolerance to the youth. The military excersizes have a very clear message, Kill, Kill, Kill your enemy! And who is the enemy? Whoever the Christian soldier is told it is. Organized religion in the US has always been a threat to democracy more than it has been a handmaiden to it. Jesus Camp provides ample proof. Change the name Jesus Camp to Madrass and the faith from Christianity to Islam and we have the moral equivalent. We have a clash of fundamentalisms.

here we are -- moving through space. suddenly we become existent. all that is everything becomes real. for millions of years. most recently, in the last 4000 years, we became conscious of being able to mind the monkey. through experiment and direct revelation we learned one is able to yoke mind and behavior.

can we give each other the essence of being -- without opening a book? turn on to that which is eternal in all and be grateful.

so many of us live histories of torture and abuse, power and control over. can we know the ground we walk on, the star system we more through or the burning fire inside? we have been trained to disconnect from existence and trust the bloody priest in the bloody temple.

jesus came from yogi aesthetics. (cousens, conscious eating) others perverted and blurred his stories as well as many other stories. why do we trust the story anyway when the direct experience holds all the power and truth. the spirits have no interest in jesus followers. (narby, shamans through time: 500 years on the path to knowledge), they instead speak to those that are connected to all of existence. not a narrow book or a narrow time.

may we all flash forward and be present. receive the beauty of existence and share the essence of what is truly inside.

HO

the speaking in tongues, unwittingly, is the one true indicator that a spirit is embedded in this philosopy. sadly it is only one spirit with one trick.

so let us move on from the one trick ponies - monotheism, partriarchy, freud, darwin (please replace freud with jung and darwin with wallace) - and see the whole picture, accept the whole picture - yoga, shamanism, science and art; and yes every religion - all of it. everything that is as old as life.

I saw a piece on this on ABC News. All I could think was, "Hitler Youth." What a hopeless situation. It is disgusting. And the fruits of this will bear for decades as these children are unlikely ever to shed the hatred and bigotry they are learning. If the fundamentalist right ever manages to erase the separation of church and state, I will be leaving the country.

Just saw the "Jesus Camp" trailer. It is scary to know that there are people out there who claim to be religious and love god while they are dressing their children up in camouflage like they are getting ready for war. Found a review for the film here:http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_4340346 . It seems like there are more and more people joining this movement everyday and brainwashing kids.

Hey Yellow, the kids in the film are homeschooled! Let me give you a few facts: Actually, homeschooled kids do better in the "diverse" world. The majority of them have been taught love and respect for other people--more so than the public schools. Public schools do not reflect the nature of society at large. Where else but school do you work with everyone the same age, learning exactly the same thing you are and having their efforts affect your grade (grade curving)? Where else do you have to put up with a bully because if you fight back you get suspended too? (no tolerance fighting policy). Homeschooled children aren't locked into the "age" thing--putting all students the same age in the same grade. Homeschooled kids often have no trouble engaging in intelligent conversation with people older or younger than them. They are used to that in their everyday lives.
In fact, homeschooled children are now being courted by many upper-crust Ivy League universities precisely because they don't fit the cookie-cutter mold of the public schools and they have a much easier time integrating into society.
