Eric Alterman, who has been writing the Altercation blog at MSNBC for a decade, has been fired.

Whether my termination is, in fact, a product of a political decision at GE/NBC, which according to reports I read and gossip I hear, has lately taken a much firmer hand in guiding the content of both MSNBC and MSNBC.com, I have no way of knowing. ...But speculation is not the same thing as evidence, and the good folks at MSNBC.com and GE/NBC can, I'm sure, give you good reasons why dumping Altercation is the right thing to do from a business standpoint -- though the natural speculation that arises is a damn good argument against the kind of media concentration that allows a company like GE to own NBC in the first place.

I'm quite interested, to say the least, to hear that explanation. If I'm being honest, I'm concerned that, if there's a progressive purge at MSNBC, liberal favorite Keith Olbermann would be next on their chopping block. I'd certainly like some kind of reassurance that he isn't going anywhere.

As for where Eric Alterman is going, you'll be able to find him at Media Matters, here.

Is GE/NBC running SCARED??? Who is the idiot who is in command there? I agree with Eric...Keith will be next. Where are the courageous colleagues who will stand up to this assault on our rights as citizens and readers to have diverse views. Was the real reason Eric's rational view on Israel's bombardment of children, women and just people along with the decimation of the infrastucture.

It is abundantly clear that the majority Israeli people have an administration they don't agree with just as we have in USA. When will these war-mongerers leave and
those of us in Israel and the USA who are decent, rational, people govern supporting constitutions and rights expressed and respected for some years.

it wouldn't make much sense for MSNBC to fire Olbermann NOW, at least not business sense. Keep in mind, Job #1 for any TV network is ratings/advertising/money. "Countdown" has consistently growing ratings, and Keith has a growing profile (TV talkshows, the new book, etc.).

The move away from FAUX-style news on MSNBC is growing, even if it's far from complete. Most of the regular contributing reporters to "Countdown" are pretty respectable non-koolaide drinkers like Dana Milbrook, David Schuster, and that British guy from Time who's name I can't remember. Even the ones who have been pretty dependable water-carriers for BushCo, like Norah O'Donnell and Lisa Myers (hell, even Andrea Mitchell!) are starting to realize that they won't be carried off in chains if they report something that puts Bush in a bad light.

Even a rightwing doofus like Scarborough has taken to not repeating the party line verbatim. I think MSNBC smells money. At least, I hope that's what they smell.

You know, one might consider the fact that five years worth of "Bush bad" gets a bit old, even if you subscribe to the notion the world was a happy, care free, terrorism free zone prior to the 2001 inauguration. While I found his music pieces interesting, his political pieces lacked intellectual honesty at best and were a gross distortion of facts or just downright untruthful at their worst.

Keith Olberman should be next.

I say goodbye and good riddance.
