Until it gets its story straight, the LA Sheriff's office may want to just quit making comments.

And by the way, according to TMZ.com there's an audio tape to corroborate the arresting officer's claims, so there could be a lot of egg on the face of the Sheriff's office -- not to mention the indolent reporters covering the incident.

The first news reports of Gibson's arrest, included the statement...

of Sheriffs' spokesman Steve Whitmore that he was arrested "without incident." These were accompanied by a police report (a rewritten one) cleansed of any funny business.

Those with knowledge of police reports specify that "without incident" doesn't mean that he made anti-semitic or sexist remarks, only that there was no resistance or force necessary.

All along, however, the TMZ.com report -- including PDFs of the original arrest report -- called the "without incident" comment into question. After initially being told that he could be arrested without handcuffs should he cooperate, Gibson did everything but.

"Gibson attempted to escape arrest" reads a direct quote from the original arrest report.

Without incident?

From the back of the car, in addition to the antisemitic comments, Mee's incident report reads: "Gibson repeatedly threatened me."

Then: "Gibson ... continually threatened me, saying he 'owned Malibu' and [promised] to get even with me. "

Without incident. We'll see. And then we'll see Whitmore retract his statement claiming that he had only read the second report or some such baloney. And then he will have lost no credibility as a spokesman because everyone expects a spokesman to lie.

And the lousy reporting will continue. Without incident.

Digg!

Funny, I used to know a Scott Reitmeyer way back when. Yeah, I'd preface it with a "Not" as well. ;D

Well, I'm glad you're still on it cuz WaPo shelved it to "Celebritology", and it's just a cute little blurb--"Ooooh, how cute, he got drunk...well, read more over here--look, Pam Anderson, whee!"

Now, what would Dobby Dobson The Righteous say now about our l'il drunk fiend? I recall listening to Focus On The Fanny many times during his POTC movie rollout--I believe that Dobby blessed our l'il crazy Drinky McDrinkster--I distinctly remember Dobby even bringing up the whole "Does Drinky Hate the Jew?" and he said "No! That's just our liberal media putting that label on him!" Oh. Okay.

Maybe I should listen for that retraction I won't hear.

LOL!!! Waiting for the on-slaught of the cries of ANTI- Semitism when anyone expresses disdain for jewish terrorists. Israel is excused from the practice of following international law. Only the poor Israelis are victims.

I have to wonder if this story would be newsworthy if Gibson had been arrested before this latest conflagration between Israel and one of its enemies. He's anti-semitic, and I make no excuses for any bigotry, but millions of Americans feel as he does. I doubt this latest Middle East debacle prompted his comments. However, when a big deal is made of his remarks, simply to score political points, it only serves to keep the Israel-Lebanon conflict in the limelight, right where Bush wants it. The administration would love to see this conflict continue, because it pushes Bush's war off of the front pages.

Meanwhile, with Bush's blessings, innocent women and children are now dying in two countries, in two wars that are far more about politics and posturing than they are about ridding the world of terrorism. Bullets and bombs have taken the place of diplomacy. World leaders have stopped talking, and their combined silence is not just deafening, it is literally killing people.

well, Evan, so far you have written approx three times as much about some Hollywood knucklehead's slurs than you have about the Qana massacre.

Good to know where your prejudices lie.

The only question is why is Alternet carrying this crap? Can I now write off Alternet as yet another faux-progressive website?

The root of most evil in the world...

The Gibson incident is just more evidence for the fact that the root of most evil in the world is… ORGANIZED RELIGION!

Where on this earth are there atheists behaving as badly as the so called “religious?” Where on earth could you find more hateful thoughts or beliefs than from the mouths and actions of the religious.

Hitler was a Catholic, Shrubua was picked by God and apparently is God to 28% of this country, etc. etc... the beat goes on...

When will people learn that their superstitions and myths do more harm than good in the world?
