In an op-ed for the L.A. Times, Duncan Black (aka Atrios) lays out the case for why the progressive blogosphere doesn't like Joe Lieberman, the quisling from Connecticut (to borrow a phrase from Mannion). Most important in the piece is the reminder that ol' Joe has jumped right on board with one of the most dangerous bits of political dogma emanating from the Right these days -- that administration critics undermine national security.

Late last year, after President Bush's job approval ratings hit record lows, Lieberman decided to lash out at the administration's critics, writing in the ultraconservative Wall Street Journal editorial pages that "we undermine presidential credibility at our nation's peril." In this he echoed the most toxic of Republican talking points -- that criticizing the conduct of the war is actually damaging to national security.
It's one thing (though not a small thing) to depart on a big issue from one's party and particularly the party base; it's quite another to essentially accuse them of treason.

Duncan clearly makes the point that the aversion to Lieberman is not just about the war, although he leaves out (for reasons of space constraints) one of Lieberman's most significant problems of late: His record on women's issues is appalling. Lieberman refused to support the Democrat-led filibuster to challenge to the SCOTUS nomination of conservative Sam Alito, not an ally to reproductive rights advocates, voting instead for cloture. Then, in March, female eyebrows (and none too few male ones) raised all over the progressive blogosphere when Lieberman asserted that Catholic hospitals shouldn't be required to dispense emergency contraception to rape victims if they didn't want to, instead providing transportation to another hospital. "In Connecticut," he said, "it shouldn't take more than a short ride to get to another hospital."

Suffice it to say, this did not go over well in the feminist blogosphere -- even among women who weren't being directly represented by Holy Joe. The conventional wisdom among the punditry may be that the blogosphere is rife with "blogofascists" who are out for blood, but they might do well to consider that the liberal female voters of Connecticut -- not to mention liberal men with wives, daughters, sisters, mothers -- may be out for something, too. Like a Senator who actually reflect their interests.

Post a comment about Lieberman? And say what? His actions speak louder than words.

NARAL has been soliciting for contributions of late. Now the women in my family have always been active supporters of women's rights issues, particularly reproductive rights.

When the call came asking for a contribution, NARAL was asked why they support Lieberman despite his abyssmal record on reproductive rights and was told, "we support those who support us."

"Exactly," answered my neice. "So I will no longer support you because you no longer support me nor do you speak for me."

Of course, the NARAL representative tried to show her, not at all successfully, how Lieberman had helped women over the past few years, but couldn't explain his actions.

The NARAL representative was quite disturbed and proclaimed that by not supporting them, we were destroying reproductive rights for all women. Of course, that's just the sort of rhetoric used by the Right.

Since then we, and every other champion of women's reproductive rights we know has contacted NARAL and gotten the same response. I even got a personal letter - not a form -begging me to reconsider my stance. To which I replied, "Dump Lieberman, then we'll talk."

The reason THIS liberal hates lieberman is because he is going to draw enough votes to elect a low down Republican to the Senate

I wonder how holy joe took it when he watched his kissin-cuzin W obsessively salivating in anticipation of eatin that PIG. Now he should empathize with those of us democrats who cringe and feel nauseated when we have the distinct privelege of listening to his invocations, his undiluted and complete support of our commander-in-chief in all his decisions. If it's tantamount to treason to criticize this embarrassment, this nincompoop, this dimwitted a-hole, this dickheaded disaster of a decider, shoot me! Joe will be spared charges of treason for betraying any dissent against his powerful prick of a pal, but his words and actions against the demcratic party that have emboldened the likes of Sean Hannity and his ilk, are acts of treason as far as I'm concerned. Man, I hope he loses -Big Time!
