"what the... fuck?"

Nubian of Blac(k)ademic spots a PlayStation Portable White ad that might represent a new low Madison Avenue, pictured at left.

What can you say about an ad like this?

How about...

Dear Sony,

Please fire your ad agency. Lynching isn't a joke. Do not attempt to convince the gaming public that your system is superior by likening your potential customers to anime-besotted Klansmen.

Yours truly,

&c

Nubian is encouraging readers to complain to Sony about the ad. Here is the contact information she supplies:

SONY CORPORATE OFFICES:

Is it just me... or have we finally gone from having ad agencies just trying to annoy us to get our attention to flat out insulting us... and not just intellectually, anymore. Any press is good press??? We'll see how much they buy into that when the boycotts start.

Anyone have info on what companies/subsidiaries Sony owns or is owned by? I'd like to make my own boycott as complete as possible.

That's disgusting, and I'll call SONY early tomorrow. Thanks for the tip. I'll be spreading this link.

The Southern Poverty Law Center tracks hate groups and racist media. Its quarterly magazine, The Intelligence Report, is highly recommended, but chilling reading. They have been documenting the burgeoning in hate group activity and racial violence over the last several years. Not too coincidentally, the trend toward racialist groups disbursing and declining reversed in 2000. It didn't take too long for the white boys to know their man was in the big chair, and that his fascist thug apologists would wink at a little 'high spirited fun'.

A cross was burned on the property of our (predominantly white) church last year (the FBI has dropped the investigation). While we were re-consecrating the ground, Fred Phelps and the 'God Hates Fags' crew were protesting across the street.

Was it a Republican congressrat or a FOX news headcase who likened GITMO to a summer camp?

It's all of a piece, and it starts at the top of the money/power pile.

Meanwhile, at our church, we recite these words every time someone is baptised:

"Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?
I will, with God's help."
(from the baptismal covenant of the Episcopal Church of the USA)

Namaste,
An Episcopalian in Durham NC

Sony run amok

I find this ad to be very disturbing. But if the following news report is accurate I did not know that the ad was running in Holland, as well as the rest of the Netherlands, where it does not appear to be garnering much controversy. Most of the anger is erupting in the U.S. apparently.

From: "Sony Sparks Controversy with Racial Ad" by David Louie, July 8, 2006 http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=business&id=4345742

"Some people say the ads are racially charged. Others point out the agency that did them is known for something called "disruptive advertising." The concept is to overturn prejudices that get in the way of new possibilities and visionary ideas. (Oh yeah?!)

The ads are running in Holland, but thanks to the internet, they're generating anger here.

Rick Callender, San Jose NAACP President: "These kind of pictures should not be present and should not be used in society. These images are absolutely horrific.""

Can't disagree with that, and WHY is it necessary for Sony to use the images of barely dressed women and not men to sell their "playstation?"
