An abortion rights group in South Dakota submitted 38,000 signatures, more than twice the number needed to force a statewide vote on South Dakota's abortion ban.

Political scientist Scott Lemieux expects the vote to be close:

Despite the fact that the abortion debate tends to inexplicably assume that public opinion directly manifests itself in legislative outcomes, if polls are any indication this will be a close vote, and the new law might very well lose. If that happens, remember that the draconian law passed the legislature overwhelmingly, and remember that the next time a nominal pro-choicer is sanguine about what would happen in legislatures if Roe is overturned.

How would all the anti-abortionists feel if only Hispanics or, say, African Americans got abortions? Time and again those holier than thou fight for the rights of the 'unborn child' but do nothing to help the already born children of the poorest in our nation. I suspect their notion is that "they" don't work very hard or have "good" family values so they needent worry about their childen getting fed enough, educated enough, clothed adequately and housed in decent living conditions...
