No one's managed to pin down the Man Who Should Have President, including John Heilemann, whose profile of Gore piques Eric Alterman to muse a bit more on the purveyor of inconvenient truths. Says Alterman:

[Y]ou gotta imagine it's going to be hard for Al to resist--especially with Hillary looking so vulnerable in a general election and her position on Iraq growing murkier and murkier...  In truth, I don't think Gore was planning to run, but now I think he's thinking about it.  He's run what turns out to be a perfect non-campaign-campaign.  And after all, he'd clearly like the job.  He's prepared for it his entire life.  And lots of people are telling him only he can save the country from the disaster of yet another Republican--possibly even another Bush--presidency.  Raising money and fielding an organization would be not problem.  And say what you will about Gore, the man's a patriot.

I certainly don't disagree with any of that, except perhaps that it's clear he'd like the job. At one time that was true--a time when he would have inherited a budget surplus and eight years of peace and prosperity. Being the heir to a massive deficit, a lack of international goodwill, and a disastrous war is a different kettle of fish altogether. It's never an easy job to be president, but surely there are times when it's harder than others. Even if the temptation is hard for him to resist, and even if we need Al Gore, he must be wondering if he needs the headache.

Then again, say what you will. The man's a patriot.

Not to mention the fact that he's the only Democrat to ever receive more votes than George W. Bush.

I do think that the collective sigh of relief breathed by the global community would boost international goodwill... But it will also require an awful lot of belt-tightening to get this country on the right track -- which can't possibly be popular among 70% of the country.

We do not need Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry...

... or any of the loser establishment insider Dems. We need a fresh face with fresh ideas and no baggage.

Americans are burnt out on beltway insider Dems who refuse to take a stand for the little guy loudly, firmly and clearly.

Running any of the above persons is a bad idea. Wake up and smell the coffee.

What Gore is trying to accomplish with his environmental work now is laudable, and a good use of his knowledge and talents would be in an advisory capacity or as head of EPA.

Is it being implied that Gore will not run because of the challenges facing him? I totally disagree with that. If Al can take on the world wide corporate conspiracy against global warming and the environment, he certainly can take on the monumental screw-up perpetrated by the rethuglican party. Consider that he will have the support of the international community and the American people, I have no doubt he will make things right for this country and the world in the eight years allotted to him.

For Christ's sake Al, run! Somebody has to save our country from another 8 years of lies, corruption and cronyism, fear and war mongering, and war profiteering. Al's probably got the best chance to beat these bastards. Please, RUN!

Gore Is America's Defensive Measure

Al, as the lone chance of beating the thugs in an '08 election (that is, if it isn't suspended by the thugs, along with the rotting remains of American democracy), is probably our only hope, at this point. A less established candidate (and party) would be slashed to bits by the corporate sycophants (DemRepugs), possibly handing the election to the Repugs. We cannot affort that risk.

He may lack a lot, but he's all we've got.

Hillary's baggage has already drown her chances of holding the presidency this decade. If she ran with Gore as VP, she'd probably sink him as well.

I'd love another chance not to vote for Al the Beltway Android. I could do that every year and never get tired.
