No joke: Bush declares 'day of prayer for permanent peace'

From our you've-gotta-be-kidding-me file, George W. Bush on Tuesday issued a formal presidential proclamation designating May 29 -- Memorial Day -- as "a day of prayer for permanent peace."

"Those who lost their lives in the defense of freedom helped protect our citizens and lay the foundation of peace for people everywhere," reads the proclamation, signed by Bush on May 16. "On Memorial Day, a grateful Nation pays tribute to their personal courage, love of country, and dedication to duty."

In conjunction with a joint resolution of Congress issued in 1950 that compels the president to issue such a proclamation each year, Bush designated "…the hour beginning in each locality at 11:00 a.m. of that day as a time to unite in prayer." The proclamation also requests that all Americans observe a National Moment of Remembrance on Memorial Day at 3:00 PM local time.

As a Veteran, I observe Memorial Day in a private and personal way and, while I understand Bush's responsibility for issuing this proclamation, I don’t think it's any secret why this received almost zero mention in the media. Nobody wants to breach the dignity of Memorial Day and George W. Bush declaring any day a time to wish for peace is just dripping with too much sick irony to acknowledge.

Isn’t this just a bit like Charles Manson declaring a mental-health day or Rush Limbaugh proclaiming a certain date as a time to renounce recreational Oxycontin? How seriously are we suppose to take a pray-for-peace proclamation from a man who lied us into a pointless war and who has the blood of tens of thousands of human beings on his hands?

But I don’t think Bush has anything to worry about as most of the country has been praying for peace on a daily basis ever since he took office. In that way, May 29 will just be another day.

This coming from a man that has made preemptive war a plank of the United States' military policy (a doctrine that says, essentially, that we will attack you if we even think that you are a threat, nevermind if you actually do anything of a threatening nature. On a smaller scale this is akin to the grade school bully who decides to kick your arse just because you look at him the wrong way).

Kinda like, I'd imagine, Hitler talking about how noble and upright Jewish people are on one hand, and shipping them off to the ovens and gas chambers with the other.

By the way, I am somewhat confident that there are those indiviudals out there that are thinking: Oh my God! He dared to compare George Bush to Hitler! That's not right!

And yet--for those individuals that feel so--it's somehow right for the Bush Administration to compare Saddam, Ahmadinejad or whomever else is the villain of the week to Hitler (Ahmadineajad is a bit of a loon, but then again so is George Bush so we don't have all that much ground to stand on on that point)? If not, then I offer a preemptive apology

Which is the one preemptive thing that I suspect that we weill never see from the Bush Administration.

With all due respect to all soldiers, living and dead, Memorial Day is essentially a Monday off work! If people are not getting drunk and barbequeing, then they are recovering from hangovers after attending NASCAR events on Sunday! As for noticing the time (11:00am and 3:00pm for prayer), that's a joke, unless all the sunbathers and swimmers can tell time by looking at the sun (remember: Memorial Day weekend is when ALL pools open).

Like I said, I do appreciate the sacrifices made by the good men in the military, but the reality is, right or wrong, this holiday turned into a precious day off work. People just might take it more seriously if the USA allowed more time off for its citizens, instead of squeezing every last hour out of us.

For this man to ask us to pray for peace on Memorial Day, we run the risk of the heavens opening, the sea boiling, the mountains falling, and sulphurous fire blazing from the sky.
Or..maybe he thinks this act of hypocrisy will signal the end of the world...isn't that what his base wants anyway?

but nothing I could come up with is any better than what he's done all on his own.

I hope they run Jeb, on a platform that he was always the smart brother.

By which Bush and his 'Dominionist' crew mean the Second Coming, or in less overtly religious terms, annihilation.

Seriously, though. I would say that this has to be some kind of joke, but... oh, screw it, nothing is too cloyingly hypocritical for these folks.

The religiosity of American culture is so archaic, and so counterproductive to cognitive reasoning, that it never fails to shock those of us who've refused to be indoctrinated.

Religion is the single worst invention of humankind, and the basis of outrageous delusions and therefore easy manipulation populations.
