[SEE UPDATE BELOW] CIA vet Ray McGovern, whose articles frequently appear on AlterNet, stood up today and asked Rumsfeld why he lied to the American people about WMD. From John Amato, who has the VIDEO:

Rumsfeld: ...it appears that there were not weapons of mass destruction there.

McGovern: You said you knew where they were.

Rumsfeld: I did not. I said I knew where suspect sites were and...

McGovern: You said you knew where they were. Tikrit, Baghdad, northeast, south, west of there. Those are your words.

Rumsfeld: My words-my words were that-no-no, wait a minute--wait a minute. Let him stay one second. Just a second....

Man, did McGovern screw the pooch on this one. What Rummy actually said was: "We know where they are. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat."

See the wording? The way it's all out of order and inexact? Unfortunately, much as he was thrown off his game and forced to lie to cover his earlier lie and then lie again when it came to al Qaeda/Saddam connections, Rumsfeld gets to play the part of the elder statesman to the sheep-like audience who boo and want McGovern kicked out.

No no, Rummy says, keep him in here. The following questioner, unfortunately cut off at the end of the video, couldn't have been more advantageous, all but urinating on McGovern and fellating the Secretary. (Crooks & Liars)

UPDATE: McGovern, the CIA vet who simply asked Rumsfeld to defend his own prewar statements about WMD was subsequently grilled by CNN's Paula Zahn [VIDEO].

Thinkprogress, who has the transcript, writes:

McGovern ably defended himself, educating Zahn that this was "not a matter of axes to grind. It’s a matter of telling the truth. And we pledged, in my day at the CIA, to tell it without fear or favor, to tell it like it is. And, when I see that corrupted, that is the real tragedy of this whole business."

UPDATE 2: Pentagon doesn't think Rumsfeld lied! Fancy that.

Laura Flanders: Vanity Fair's Retort to the New Yorker's Obama Cover Misses the Mark
If Vanity Fair wanted to flip the New Yorker cover on the GOP, they'd have to portray the media's lies about the candidate. Not the true stuff.

"Owned, bitch."

I just have to wonder why it's such a big deal to stand up to the assholes in command these days when it's what we should've been doing in the first place.

Both videos are a brilliant display of media gamesmanship. It appeared to be a carefully chosen audience (were they paid to cheer for that scoundrel?), full of right wing supporters, with a handful of protesters allowed to present us with the image of a balanced situation. But their mistake was allowing McGovern, who is far too intelligent, to ask such a pointed question. He's apparently much more intelligent than Paula Zahn, who in the CNN interview did everything in her power to rip McGovern, but he was unflappable. At one point, she asks McGovern if he has an axe to grind with Rumsfeld. His brilliant response, that he was only trying to get to the truth, revealed that it was she who had the axe to grind.

Love it...I wrote about the same thing on my blog today. I'm all about calling these old bastards out. They suck so bad as leaders. My favorite is that their concept of truth-telling goes something like this: "If I beleive it's true when I say it, it's truth!"

What idiots. And they call themselves MORAL leaders?

Ick!

Paula Zahn and the rest of the Washington Press Corps are nothing but corporate whores. And their pimps are all the criminals in the White House. I got his pathetic image in my head of Zahn going down on Rumsfeld after that interview and asking him if she did a good "job" for him. These media sluts make me sick.

... that security was right there ready to drag him out before Rumsfeld waved them off... all for asking a tough question.

Make no mistake... we are seeing the rise of fascism in America. We have time to stop it.. and it is just this sort of thing that SHOULD become a movement. This should be seen at EVERY speach by these folks.

It is amazing how many Cassandras we have in our midst--thank the Universe! Unfortunately, we all know that for her efforts at telling truth to power, Cassandra got her tongue cut out and was thrown in prison. Symbolically that is what happens to our present-day Cassandras, and by the very institution--the press--that should be celebrating them! So I say: "Long live truthiness! And Stephen Colbert, Ray McGovern, Jon Stewart, General Odom, Gore Vidal and, don't forget--Helen Thomas!!!

Agreed, Paula Zahn is nothing more than a corporate whore.

The beauty of her interviewing anybosdy is that so few people watch her show that practically nobody saw it.

It is wonderful that in one of the reddest states in the Union, Rumsfeld was called out by none other than an ex-CIA man who is sick of the unprecedented politicization of the intelligence community for the purposes of the Bush Oil-imperialism agenda! Bush has destroyed the country! We need to speak truth to power! Rumsfeld's further claim that the CIA intelligence reports was the source of Colin Powell's statements to the UN is also bunk. The CIA never said that Iraq had either Weapons of Mass Destruction or al-Queada links. They maintained all along that neither existed and were under constant bullying from neo-cons to come up with evidence which they never did. As far as his statement that the troops entered Basra from Kuwait with protective suits it is irrelevant. Of course the commanding officers of these troops were lied to and going on the imformation they were given prepared the troops accordingly. What does that prove!? Only that the Administration covered its ass in lying to the US military in addition to the US public! There are the biggest bunch of fascist liars in the history of post WWII superpower politics! As for Paula Zahn, she is one of countless reasons why anyone who thinks the media has a liberal bias is an idiot par excellance'.

I hear he's still more popular than cancer, but the tide is turning because cancer sometimes goes away.

If I were Bush, I'd lock him in a room, and if I were Paula Zahn I'd start hooching for new pimps. These guys can't get her into the good hotels anymore.
