The deep unpopularity of an unpopular president

Only four states remain red...bet on an October surprise.

Bob Geiger, looking at state-by state-approvals of Bush, finds that his slide may actually be deeper than any one poll shows. In just the 18 months since his reelection, the map has gone from 31 red states to just four: Utah (55%), Wyoming (54%), Idaho (53%), and Nebraska (51%), which collectively comprise "barely two percent of the 296.5 million people in the United States based on a July 2005 Census Bureau estimate."

What's also interesting is to see which states are abandoning Bush to the greatest degree. When measured by what percentage vote they gave Bush in 2004 compared to the latest approval ratings, here are the states in which the president has lost the most support:
-- Kentucky (-21%)
-- Indiana (-21%)
-- North Dakota (-20%)
-- Montana (-20%)
And there are many other states not far behind, where the unpopular president has lost between 15 and 19 percent of his support.
...[I]n case you're wondering how he's doing back in the Lone Star State, Bush is clinging to a dismal 45 percent approval rating in his home state, with 17 percent loss of support since 2004.
At this rate, he may not even be able to go back home to Crawford after he's impeached.
Well, I'm sure there's good brush-clearin' in Utah.

Eight states (Illinois, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Vermont, Rhode Island, and New York) all come in with a less-than-30% approval rating already, with the last two topping out at a mere 24%.

Not good news for the embattled prez...which makes this piece by John Dean all the more chilling. Finding that Bush falls into the James Dave Barber-defined category of an "active/negative," and bearing in mind that he must feel like a cornered rat on the sinking ship that is his administration, Dean predicts that "As the 2006 midterm elections approach, this active/negative president can be expected to take further risks."

If anyone doubts that Bush, Cheney, Rove and their confidants are planning an "October Surprise" to prevent the Republicans from losing control of Congress, then he or she has not been observing this presidency very closely.
What will that surprise be? It;s the most closely held secret of the Administration.
How risky will it be? Bush is a whatever-it-takes risk-taker, the consequences be damned.
The hat tip for the Dean article goes to Thesaurus Rex, who warns, "Yon Bolten hath a lean and hungry look. Brace yourselves people. This could turn ugly."

Turn ugly? Oy.

Disapproval of the president is not equivalent to disapproval of the republican party. Most of the states that were red in '04 will be red in '06 and '08. This is because most people who affiliate themselves with any party understand that not every member of their party is perfect, and when they vote for someone who turns out to make more mistakes than they'd like it was a mistake in candidate selection, not a mistake in party selection.

So I have to assume when you say the states are "blue" that you mean something other than what people ordinarily mean when they say that the states are "blue" (that they will vote democratic) in favor of something more convenient and perhaps a bit deceptive (that they object to the president's behavior). Not a very effective communicative method, but great if your goal is to enhance confidence among those who, as of yet, have little reason to be confident.

Bush In Utah?

Bush won 80% of the vote in 04. His popularity has dropped there soon.

If he retires to Utah after he's impeached, it will have to be in the sticks, Salt Lake City has one of the most liberal mayors, Rocky Anderson, in the country. He organized and led the Veterans Day protests while Congressman Matheson (D) rode in W's limo.

Utah's got some good line dancing, he'll love it.

Let's not miss the Nov. vote!

I was asked by someone rather hostile toward me, refering to my (Nov. vote) rant over another article here, "What the HELL are you going to do about it, in Argentina?" For all who may be interested, I will vote, through my nearest US consulate (Bs.As.). I wouldn't miss it for the world!
