Wayans wants 'nigga'...

Wayans'll have to compete with a kid already selling "Nigga" clothing out of his car.

Damon Wayans is trying to trademark the word Nigga "for a clothing line and retail store," according to Wired via Scott Thill.

Despite his fame as the creator of In Living Color and the star of a number of films, including Spike Lee's Bamboozled, Wayans is running into some problems. Which can't be all that surprising given the volatility surrounding this word in all its variations.

Trademark examiner Kelly Boulton rejected the registration dated Dec. 22, citing a law that prohibits marks that are "immoral or scandalous."

And that was the second time.

In an interview in the documentary Tupac: Resurrection, Tupac Shakur explains, "Niggers was the ones on the rope, hanging off the thing; Niggas is the ones with gold ropes, hanging out at clubs."

Thill writes:

"While this may shock those well-meaning whites that have spent about as much time around black people as they have listening to Ol' Dirty Bastard [a nice ODB piece for novices here], it's not much of a surprise to a black community that has been mining the explosive word for all it's worth."

"Nigger" of course is the de facto derogatory term employed by racist pricks while "Nigga" is the entertainment-approved derivation used by everyone else on earth, white, black or otherwise, to describe anyone appropriating black culture for their own needs. I once had a white thug from Oakland call me his "nigga" on the pickup hoops court in Berkeley to the total approval of his homies, all of whom were black. So yes, it's transferable. But enough to trademark? We'll see.

Keon Rhodan, who's already selling un-trademarked shirts from his car shares this anecdote: "I was in the mall with one of the shirts on, and an old lady said, 'Where did you get that shirt from?'... She followed me to the car and bought five shirts for her grandchildren." (Morphizm)

I was taught not even to write the word (and you notice I'm not.). It was on entirely different level from fuck, the 'other' dirtiest word.

I guess commercialization is a step in reclamation. After all, you can buy shirts now that say 'queer'.

My Harlem workmates could freely use the words Nigger and Black Ass. The were free to call me Honkey. We were real friends.

Would just anybody be allowed to buy those clothes?

And if just anybody could buy them, could just any old person ASK for them, too?

The "N" word and all it's derivatives are an affront to those of us who went to the streets and marched, lost jobs and lives to put an end to such denigration by those who were too ignorant to know any other way of addressing another human being. And to have the next generation use the same slurs, thinking it is cute and funny to address one another shows their own ignorance of history. It shows that their parents were negligent of teaching their children their history. And it is the ignorance of this generation, the same ones who wear ther pants below their buttocks and adress their female friends as whores and Bitches. It is not cute but ignorant and they are taken advantaged of by those who's only aim is to exploit their ignorance for their own monetary gain.

Agreed.

It's sad that Wayans would capitalize on the ignorance of anybody who would buy into that "reclaimation" bullshit.

It's ignorance, plain and simple. (And I mean REALLY simple.)

Anybody calls me that, black or white, and there's gonna be some words exchanged.

While I highly doubt Wayans will be able to trademark the phrase, I don't think it's a sign of ignorance in todays society.
To clarify where I'm coming from, I shall note that I am 15, puerto rican/black, and originally from an urban part of New York City.
My generation knows what African-Americans had to go through to get where we are. And many of us know that we aren't equal to the majority race even today. We've embraced the use of the term 'nigga' in its new context, because we feel that it shows that our generation can transcend all the horrors of the past. We want to eliminate the negative connotations associated with the word because: no one word should be allowed so much power over an entire race. Sure, the commercialization of the word is a little ridiculous, but the fact is, we have taken some power away from the bigots.
That's all I have to say, really. Just wanted to defend my peers, ya know? =)

Nobody's gonna call you thier "nigga" if they can see that your obviously uncomfortable with it. The term is usually used in reference to someone the speaker is on friendly terms with. Of course, it has other uses, for example as an exclamation. Kind of like the word "dude".

I confess that I was kind of put out when a group copy righted a three letter word word I had used all my life to mean happy, anybody being happy. They just declared that it meant "us (not you)" no matter what mood they are in or I am in and I could no longer feel happy that way. If I put up with that why on earth would I mind someone making up a word to mean "us (not you)"?

One of us old guys

If you're black, you can use the word with impunity.

If you're white, you can use it at the risk of hurting someone, getting your teeth kicked in, and first, foremost and always, looking like a complete ass.
