Independent journalist and blogger Robert Lindsay has been painstakingly adding up the death toll from Hurricane Katrina:

The death toll from Hurricane Katrina climbed sharply on January 24, with the addition of 25 new deaths to the count, 23 in Louisiana and two in Mississippi, according to several news articles published on that date in the The New Orleans Times-Picayune (two articles), The Birmingham News, The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, The Louisiana Weekly and The Insurance Journal.

That puts the new death toll over the 1,400 mark for the first time, at 1,417, up from 1,392 on January 17, a week before. Although this increase is quite dramatic and unexpected at this late date, and the size and timing of the increase arouses suspicion, we will consider that seven references in six major US papers will be enough to validate the increase, until we hear otherwise.

Over 3200 people are still missing after the storm.

How can that many people still be missing? Does no one have phones or any sort of comunication? How do you lose track of that many people?

Thanks for the notice on this. I'm more concerned, at this point, that with five or six months left till new hurricanes move in, a good portion of those displaced are living in sheds and tents. Warmer average world temps are creating a reservoir of energy to drive larger storms.

Arouses suspicion???!!! Suspicion of what? Foul play? It has always been known that the death toll could rise if ever all the debris was cleared. Since there are still many areas that haven't even been entered in god knows how long, why should anyone be surprised. The marshes probably claimed many of the still missing.

Before criticizing anyone regarding the calamity and travesty of hurricane Katrina, the mayor of NO is primarily to blame for not taking action initially. The Governor is second in line for the blame for not pushing the mayor to initiate the evacuation.
Should anyone be shocked at the fact that more bodies are being discovered? Absolutely not since some of the areas in NO and Mississippi have still not been thoroughly searched.
Certainly FEMA had blame, but the fed is not legally allowed to enter any state area until it is invited, period.
Most people have absolutely no idea what the law states or requires and that is why there is always so much confusion!
