In the wake of the Republican/Abramoff scandal the GOP strategy has been to attempt to bipartisan-ize it; to imply that some Democrats were involved, counting on the media's acrobatic attempts to make everything fair through false equivalency or by simply echoing lies.

Bingo. The meme that there were Dems on the take from Abramoff made it into some of the scandal coverage. Howard Dean, having none of it, went on Wolf Blitzer's show to answer those questions. The Wolf was silenced while Dean articulately and forcefully, but with great restraint, revealed Republican talking points as fakes [VIDEO -- right click and save linked file to disk if it doesn't play].

Jonathan has the transcript:

BLITZER: Should Democrats who took money from Jack Abramoff, who's now pleaded guilty to bribery charges among other charges, a Republican lobbyist in Washington — should the Democrats who took money from him give that money to charity or give it back?

DEAN: There are no Democrats who took money from Jack Abramoff. Not one. Not one single Democrat. Every person named in this scandal is a Republican, every person under investigation is a Republican, every person indicted is a Republican. This is a Republican finance scandal. There is no evidence that Jack Abramoff ever gave any Democrat any money, and we've looked through all those FEC reports to make sure that's true.

BLITZER: [Stammering] But through various Abramoff-related organizations, and outfits, a bunch of Democrats did take money that presumably originated with Jack Abramoff.

DEAN: That's not true either. There's no evidence for that either, there's no evidence...

BLITZER: What about Senator, what about, what about, what about Senator Byron Dorgan?

DEAN: Senator Byron Dorgan and some others took money from Indian tribes. They're not agents of Jack Abramoff. There's no evidence that I've seen that Jack Abramoff directed any contributions to Democrats. I know the Republican National Committee would like to get the Democrats involved in this. They're scared. They should be scared. They haven't told the truth, and they have misled the American people, and now it appears they're stealing from Indian tribes. The Democrats are not involved in this.

BLITZER: [Long pause, apparently getting direction in his earpiece] [Sigh] Unfortunately, we, uh, Mr. Chairman, we've got to leave it right there.

Isn't this the same Wolf Blitzer who expressed outrage at the absence of Iraqi gratitude for U.S. occupation?

Hurray for Howard Dean - someone - anyone - to get the truth across about this Republican-only scandal. The lying Repubs have been trying mightily to have people think---Oh well, they're all corrupt, so what's the difference. There's a difference... And we got it from Dean.

What knocks the Reublican's socks off every time? What leaves them speechless! An honest man -- without guile. How rare is that!!
Howard Dean got me into politics a few years ago with his "You've Got the Power!"
I am politically active -- working for honesty -- every day. It's a new life for me, one that gives me purpose -- and I owe it all to Howard Dean.

Dearest Mr. blitzer, o'reilley, fox and all the trembling cowards in cable and network news media. You are lower case people, you don't deserve any caps in your names.

There are exceptions. Amongst them are KEITH OLBERMAN. He's laughing out the truth from the very belly of the beast. No easy feat. A very funny and brave American.

To the rest of the news factories poisoning us and killing our young people:

Start packing your stuff and making plans to leave he country. We're looking out for YOU, this time.

Note to ann coulter, and other "Hate-Crime-Performance-Artists":

How many Americans have you betrayed? How many deaths have you aided in?

Don't let that dim ember of a conscience bite. Buy yourself the needed time to consider all the limbs you owe all those kids.

There must be some kind of phamaceutical that can tent stake you down for two hours a night.

Sleep tight.

I know I am, for the first time in a long time.

What an asshat that Wolf Blitzer is. I've always intensely disliked him, so it's great to see someone bulldoze him so well. Usually, Wolf puts words in his interviewee's mouths, and runs roughshod over them. Dean's too tough, and too smart, to let him do it.

Yay for Dean. I hope more Dems start following suit. There are so few of them with a spine.

Blitzer is a dipshit of the highest order with little, if any, socially redeeming value. Same goes for much of the cnn tripe.

Repugs didn't just "mislead" - they LIED

Howard Dean did the nation a favor with his statements, but I just have one quibble with him and the other Dems who politely say The Cretin and his administration have "mislead" the American people (and the rest of the world). The Cretin and his Criminal Cabal have not merely and simply and innocently "mislead" us all, they have deliberately LIED, and then LIED again to cover the original LIES. "Mislead" sounds so innocent, like a magician drawing attention away from the actual events... when, in fact, since the presidential debate of 2000, I've heard nothing but LIES, LIES, and MORE LIES coming from the mouth of The Cretin and his Criminal Cabal. I just wish the Dems would stop being so nice and label the LIES for what they are: LIES....

And, for the record, Mr. Dean, I saw the original media and neo-Con mis-labeled "scream" and I know it was not a scream but a cheer to get your staff and voters enthusiastic for the next primary.... You have first-hand experience with neoCon Repuke LIES, so please stop being so polite and say the neoCon Repuke LIES are simply "misleading" the American public. They're LYING; you know it, I know it, and so does everyone else who has an IQ above a rock.

Keep talking straight, Mr. Dean, and keep getting media attention (and keep putting those right-wingnuts in their places by refuting their lies with truth), and hopefully the sheeples who have imbibed too much kool-aid will come out of their brainwashed comas in time to vote with their common sense in the '06 and '08 elections....

Could Wolf have been auditioning for TDS or SNL? I mean, the timing of the sigh was expert. Look out, Jon Stewart!

Watching Blitzer stammer like a dunce was worth all the tea in China. Funny how it was cut short,(hmm) but I think the point was made. Dems need to get Dean out there as their public enforcer, the Democrat equivalent of Tom Delay. Only honest. Either that or hand out some strap-on balls.
