It's (semi-) official, the media's not allowed in.

Yesterday we looked at the suspicious actions of FEMA, working tirelessly to whitewash their failure and now...

Peek guest blogger Lindsay Beyerstein is down in Louisiana with Bob Brigham of the Swing State Project who writes:

"We are in Jefferson Parish, just outside of New Orleans. At the National Guard checkpoint, they are under orders to turn away all media. All of the reporters are turning they're TV trucks around. Things are so bad, Bush is now censoring all reporting from NOLA. The First Amendment sank with the city."
Jeralyn Merritt also quotes NBC's Brian Williams' chilling description:
"At that same fire scene, a police officer from out of town raised the muzzle of her weapon and aimed it at members of the media... obvious members of the media... armed only with notepads. Her actions (apparently because she thought reporters were encroaching on the scene) were over the top and she was told. There are automatic weapons and shotguns everywhere you look. It's a stance that perhaps would have been appropriate during the open lawlessness that has long since ended on most of these streets. Someone else points out on television as I post this: the fact that the National Guard now bars entry (by journalists) to the very places where people last week were barred from LEAVING (The Convention Center and Superdome) is a kind of perverse and perfectly backward postscript to this awful chapter in American history."

Preview of the Fall of America

If this kind of behavior happens in one city after the worst disaster, what will America look like if, for instance, someone manages to explode a nuclear weapon in one or more cities. New Orleans is the preview of the kind of barbarism that humans will resort to, and the government (this particular one) will likely blockade the areas, and leave them to a slow and horrible death. What is happening to us?

Class Warfare

Yes, I'm still waffling over whether to this lack of action has been deliberate murder or merely criminal negligence. The number of reports coming out that indicate that the help that was needed was turned back has me leaning quite strongly in the direction of deliberate murder. It looks very much like class warfare has broken out into the open.

This is no surprise. Maybe it's just another phase in this administrations intentions for dictatorship! What's next? It would not surprise me if the administration investigated all of us who post our thoughts and opinions; and took us all to some form of Gitmo. Time has indeed come for us to take back our Country before it is too late...and the clock is indeed ticking....

I just sent the following email to the Governor of LA:

Dear Governor Blanco,
Please do not exclude the media from the disaster zones. I'm sure you can understand that much of America's trust in our government institutions is failing in view of the catastrophe in your state. While I have held that you are largely blameless for the failure of the rescue operations, if you are complicit in denying the right of the press to cover the ongoing situation on behalf of your fellow citizens, I will join many in reassessing your culpability. You cannot hope to recover personally, nor can the people of LA recover without the complete support of the American people. Your unwise impulse to restrict the flow of information will undercut that support dramatically and perhaps fuel the already rising unease caused by the events of the past 10 days. I ask you to resist whatever pressures may be brought to bear, and allow the media to do its job in NOLA and the state as a whole. Please step forward and end this information blockade before it becomes entrenched.

Sincerely,
Joanne Roush

Has there ever been a time in American history when our leaders so purposely or through grave incompetence, created the destruction of the society we once knew, and for all the years and lives sacrificed to achieve the world's beacon of freedom and justice that we once were, has there ever been such a group of criminal bastards and destroyers of our way of American life as George Bush and his riechwing administration??? I ask you.

We can't let this attack on First Amendment stand.
