Fox News' levee breaks (video)

Posted by Evan Derkacz at 8:05 AM on September 3, 2005.

Shep Smith snaps, Geraldo cries and the truth escapes -- despite Hannity's best efforts.
"They're all still here. Why is that? God, I wish I knew."

This is a must-watch video. Shep Smith and Geraldo Rivera reporting on location in New Orleans were visibly upset. Upset by the devastation, upset by the response.

Geraldo said that the response is as bad or worse than what mother nature brought.

Shepard Smith:

"the government said you go here and you'll get help or you go that convention center and you'll get help and they didn't get help, they got locked in there and they watched people being killed around them and they watched people starving and they watched elderly people not get any medicine and NOW THEY KNOW IT'S BEEN HAPPENING BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN TELLING THEM REPEATEDLY OVER AND OVER EVERY DAY AND YOU KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING NOW? (AND I'M NOT BLAMING ANYONE, I'M TELLING YOU WHAT'S HAPPENING)"

He proceeds to explain that the government's set up a checkpoint preventing people from leaving the disaster zone where there's no food, water, medicine, or electricity to the parish where there is.

Hannity cuts in: "I want to get some perspective..."

The best part may be the juxtaposition of news ticker and image. As a disgusted Geraldo explains that watching Fox News on Wednesday he saw the people at the convention center saying "help us, help us, get us out of here" and that 48 hours later they're still there, the ticker below him reads:

"Bush says there's a 'flow of progress' in the region and caravans are continuing to arrive..."

At the end of this ticker quote, Geraldo who later cries with a baby in his arms says "as far as i know none of them, none of them, not a single one of them has been bussed out of here. They're all still here. Why is that? God, I wish I knew."

(While we're talking bussing, read Lindsay's post on the heroic teen who bussed citizens to safety and may be arrested for it.) (Crooks and Liars has the video)

IF ANYBODY HAS BEEN AWAKE FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS THEY WOULDN'T EXPECT ANYTHING DIFFERENT THAN WHAT JUST HAPPENED IN NEW ORLEANS,MS.,AL.. NOT ACCUSING HIM OF THE HURRICANE THAT WOULD BE STUPID.HIS RESPONSE TO THIS DISASTER IS UNACCEPTABLE,DISGUSTING AND FRANKLY JUST MAKES ME ASHAMED OF HIM.

Homeless Insecurity

The Bush administration policy has been to dismantle everything and start over with the neo-con twist.

Boy did that work well. NOT! They dismantled FEMA and threw it into the vat called Homeland Security. Placed into action in New Orleans it revealed its real name- "Homeless Insecurity!"

A little Pogo is appropriate here: "We has seen the enemy and it is us."

I used to think Bush was a doofus. Then we kicked butt in Afghanistan, and I thought, maybe he's not so bad after all. But now? He's a doofus.

Im just wondering.. where are the countries that the US has helped in the past? I haven't heard about any other World Leaders offering to help (besides Castro). Please correct me if Im wrong. I'd love to know that I am.

How enlightening, you notice there are other countries. Well, we Canadians are shocked by America's denial of help from our Canadian westcoast. I blogged it early on in this preventable catastrophic debauckle of your Federal Administration's incompetence. So did many other's whom I've linked in my blog, Bush refused help, from Canada?

I'm still astounded by what has happened since those early days. Wish you would turn your usual American prowess into overthrowing that intolerable regimé responsible. You've put them in place, they failed miserably; now, impeach and be done with them.

Never thought I'd see the day the US would become a third world state. Trillions in debt, two billion plus on Iraq so far; and reluctance to help the most desperate of your own citizens. Shame doesn't even begin to express the feelings the majority of our civilized world has for your President. He envokes unmitigated disgust. Now who in their right mind would want to help him? See the karma America has created by putting a megalomaniac in the White House. Sheer horror!

All comments seem to exibit frustration at doing anything about anything.

Here's a suggestion:
Let's stop buying gas from Mobile & Exxon. I buy from Citco. Citco buys oil from Venesuala. Isn't that fun? If people stop buying from the two largest companies, Mobile & Exxon, prices will come down, trust me.

People please don't get your hopes up. The Hurricane disaster area is just a preview of what's going to happen during the next BIG terrorist attack. That Homeland Security Agency is no better prepared for IT and this time it will be a BIG ONE, something like a dirty atomic bomb. It's only a matter of time! We must do something to force these government bureaucrats to be responsible to ALL the people not just to the ones that can pay their graft. Bush/Cheney and their cohorts are not the only ones responsible it's Congress that's responsible too! Going around hugging people is ONE thing, regardless of race creed and color. Genuinely helping them in time of need is another! These agencies MUST direct us what to do in time of emergency. We're
all smart enough to DO IT!

The Blame Game

I will agree, that the the Bush Admin and Fema and Homeland sec Dept failed in some respects, But why am I only seeing that angle reported in the media? What about the Gov of LA and the mayor of New Orleans? Where in the world is the criticsim of their inept ability to deal with the crisis as well? You know there are reports that the Gov would not allow the National Guard to come before the storm-perhaps if they had been there before the storm-there would have been control and we would not have had thugs shooting at aid that was trying to come in. Perhaps they could have saved hundreds from being raped and countless others from being murdered. Why didn't the Mayor Nagin provide those who could not get out-especially the elderly and those with special needs-with the 200 or so school buses he had at his disposal to get them out. Why, in a city that needs at least 72 hours notice to evacuate, did they wait until less than 24 hours before the storm hit to evacuate. I still remember seeing people waiting on the hgihway to get out and thousands waiting in line to get into the Superdome when the first effects of the storm were already hitting and people were standing in the rain. I felt then that this was not going to be good. No, there is no excuse for the way things were handled at the federal level and some things need to change. But let's be fair and pass the blame and criticsim around to the state and local governments that also neglected their citizens in great time of need. The Gov and the Mayor apparently had some issues with each other and they failed the great citizens of Lousiana. By the way did I mention how the Great Mayor pushed aside his own people that had been standing in line for days to get out of that hell hole of a city to get tourists on a bus out of town when help was finally able to arrive? This whole fiasco and great tragedy in the end has taken the level of politcal in-fighting to a whole new level. Yes, at every chance we get lets blame the bad Republicans for it all-but the Democratic Mayor and Governor get off with maybe a slap on the wrist. Everyone on both sides-yes, both sides are playing the Blame Game and putting in the sound bytes that will help them with their political ambitions. But what they should be doing on all levels, local, state and federal is accepting the blame for where each level of government failed, working on fixing it, and get back to saving and helping rebuild lives.
