Media myth: Dubya's likeability

Posted by Evan Derkacz at 5:37 AM on August 25, 2005.

Don't be fooled by PR, Americans don't like him and the proof is in the latest stats.

Clinton has lapped Dubya. Disturbing as that may sound, what it actually means is that, at this point in his presidency, Clinton was twice as popular as Bush. You read that right. Bush just hit 36% approval whereas Clinton's was 72%, notes Cenk Uygur.

Noting that these are "pre-coup numbers" and that they're slightly lower than Nixon during his impeachment hearings, Uygur comments:

"To say 'people like Bush' under these circumstances is to be so inaccurate that I have to question either your intelligence or your motives. How much cognitive reasoning ability do you need to figure out that 36% approval rating means people DON’T like George Bush? Do you owe the guy money or something?"
(Huffington Post)

Digg!

What's to like?

What is there to like about this idiot? He does'nt have a personality...I'm not sure he can really read...he bailed on America during his "military days."
I don't know of anyone who has screwed up as many business endeavors as georgie, (of course his daddy and daddy's Saudi buddies saved his ass then.) Just look what the prick has done to this country. More damage in five short years than all past presidents combined, etc.
So what is there to like about someone who can't even speak without words on paper or a teleprompter. The shithead is dumber than a rock. (no offense to the rock)

who claims to like bush even a tiny bit. And it's not that folks merely don't like him: There's almost a rabid hatred. I rarely hear anyone mention his name w/out a scowl or sneer accompanying it. Most say, "God, I HATE that asshole" or somesuch.

Of course, I do live in Los Angeles, where we are free to say what we think without fear of repercussion (for the most part) unlike some other rightwing fanatic evangelistic areas, so that could be why there's so much open honesty.

Between the shifty, beady eyes and the sneer, the head bob/wag thing he does, and the idiotic, defensive, crazy things that come out of him mouth, I'm always amazed that anyone in their right mind would like him.

And I think Laura stays drugged in order to be able to tolerate his presence. Her vacuous, Stepford Wife-like countenance speaks volumes.

When he finally gets impeached, perhaps he and Pat "killer" Robertson can put together a tv show where they can just converse with each other and the rest of us can laugh hysterically. George is not likable. I don't even pity him because his cowardly nastiness is on purpose. I am still dying to know what that little box was in the middle of his back during the debates. If you listen to him trying to speak extemporaneously, his pauses are so abrupt, its like someone is telling him what to say next. He's been a good puppet, but I think the puppeteers are about to cut his strings.

The figure referred to in the article, 36% is for Bush’s handling of the economy, not surprising considering the medias lack of interest in the current economic expansion. His overall approval, according to Gallup, is 45%. Clintons job approval in August of 97 (the same place in his term that Bush is in) was 60%, not 72%.

At last, something to cheer about.

We've been waiting for numbers to crunch. Hope Dubya's string pulling puppeteers (Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc) are crunched along with him. Yes, at last, something to cheer about.

For your amusement and future reference, here's what Bush has said about bin Laden at various points in time, depending on how he was trying to spin things:

"The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. It is our number one priority and we will not rest until we find him."
- G.W. Bush, 9/13/01

"I want justice...There's an old poster out West, as I recall, that said, 'Wanted: Dead or Alive,'"
- G.W. Bush, 9/17/01, UPI

"...Secondly, he is not escaping us. This is a guy, who, three months ago, was in control of a county [sic]. Now he's maybe in control of a cave. He's on the run. Listen, a while ago I said to the American people, our objective is more than bin Laden. But one of the things for certain is we're going to get him running and keep him running, and bring him to justice. And that's what's happening. He's on the run, if he's running at all. So we don't know whether he's in cave with the door shut, or a cave with the door open -- we just don't know...."
- Bush, in remarks in a Press Availablity with the Press Travel Pool,
The Prairie Chapel Ranch, Crawford TX, 12/28/01, as reported on
official White House site

"I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority."
- G.W. Bush, 3/13/02

"I am truly not that concerned about him."
- G.W. Bush, repsonding to a question about bin Laden's whereabouts,
3/13/02 (The New American, 4/8/02)
