But What Does That 'Get a Brain Morans' Dude Think About All This?

Can you miss your own 15 minutes?

I've had this nagging question bouncing around the old brain-pan for the past day or two.

It's about this dude:

morans

You know him, you love feeling superior to him, he's clearly a superstar among liberal bloggers and their readers.

Booman referenced the iconic tea-partier* the other day, and something one of his commenters wrote got me thinking:

I am almost starting to feel sorry for that guy in the picture. Poor bastard.

He's probably too stupid to have a computer, but his kids will see their dad forever.**

Of course, an enormous number of stupid people own and use computers. Yet studies suggest that in terms of the websites we browse and the news media we consume, we are a deeply polarized nation. According to a Pew study, online users tend to "find and join groups that share their ideological, cultural, and lifestyle preferences."

And that widely-cited study of the political blogosphere during the 2004 elections (PDF):

... we found that liberal and conservative blogs did indeed have different lists of favorite news sources, people, and topics to discuss.... The division between liberals and conservatives was further reflected in the linking pattern between the blogs, with a great ma jority of the links remaining internal to either liberal or conservative communities.

We're also sorting ourselves out in the real world, living in communities of increasingly like-minded people. Who travels in moran-dude's circles? Well consider this: it's not just the hilarious misspelling that makes the image so rich, but also the knowledge that none of the people around him noticed. (You just know he proudly carried that sign around all morning as he anticipated sticking it to those smug hippie liberals.) So I think it's safe to assume that he and his pro-war fellow-travelers probably aren't big readers of Daily Kos or Talkingpoints Memo.

Which raises an interesting question: could a viral internet sensation like 'get a brain morans' dude -- a sensation only on our side of the information divide -- be splashed all over hundreds of thousands of web-pages and not even know it? Is he living his life, listening to Rush's soothing stream of grievances as he drives to and from his crappy mcjob, completely oblivious to the fact that he's brought countless smiles to the lips of millions of progressives across the country?

Is it possible in this wired era of social segregation to get your 15 minutes of fame and just miss them entirely?

I mean, surely that guy's as well known as this one ...

(You know you want to watch it again, so just go ahead.)

It's rumored on internet message boards that someone heard that someone else -- perhaps a guy from Indiana -- knew the gentleman in the photo, told him all about it, and "apparently the guy is really embarrassed by the pic!!!"  I consider the reports to be less-than-definitive.

* I know, the photo wasn't in fact taken at a tea-party -- the guy was a counter-protester at an anti-war rally at Boeing's missile production facility near St. Louis, Mo.

** I fixed a typo or two.

Digg!

I'm sure the "Moran" guy was embarrassed to find out his misspelling was broadcast to the world, but what that has to do with the lip-syncing basement dweller in the video I don't know.........

The guy is clearly a Cardinal fan, which is the other reason he was my computer background for months. It's like a double dip for a Cubs fan.

reminds me of the Xtian proselytizer mindset.

I think the root of such flagrant self-awareness deficit
is found in our religious culture.
------------
The religious reasoning would be along these lines:

Clearly, it makes him feel good and justified and purposeful in life,
to think how he does.
If it makes him feel good and purposeful,
what could possibly be wrong about that?

Good old Moran guy.

I was going to write something about not confusing the internet with real air, because we're all so different when we can see each other, but it really doesn't go, because there he is, standing in the sunshine on a beautiful day in the neighborhood, sticking it to us for wanting to stop the production of missiles. He knows that if we all grew brains, we'd know that we NEED as many warheads as we can get.

It occurred to me that he works at the plant. He looks like somebody who works in a plant. He looks like somebody who works in a plant c. 1985.

Anyway, my real question is, you guys write the Greta Christina stuff on friday nights in the bar, right?

Double-D'oh: Maybe he's one of Carrie Prejean's ex-boyfriends too

I mean, it is rather alarming to think that he might have dodged his moment in the limelight twice without hitting the proverbial jackpot and loading up the truck and moving to Beverly, but you have to wonder how smart Mr Moran really could be with all that perchlorate leeching out of the local munitions factory and into the local water supply.

To think that Mr Moran may have also received multiple "videos" from Carrie Prejean and deleted most of them, thinking "this crazy b*tch doesn't even have big jugs" - and then another one of Carrie's ex-boyfriends gets interviewed (and maybe paid) by TMZ and Mr Moran now thinks "Why, God, why do you always crap on me?"

So Mr Moran is down at the local Hoosgau Bar, slapping himself on the head ("D'oh!") and slamming Bud + Jack boilermakers...

"It ain't the way I wanted it! I can handle things! I'm smart! Not like everybody says... like dumb... I'm smart and I want respect!"

This Picture Was Taken in 2003 (i.e. before the Teabagger protests)

Just thought I'd point out that I first saw this picture in 2003, taken during a pro-Operation Desert Freedom, or whatever it was they called our invasion of Iraq. Mission Accomplished!

Used to be people with long hair were progressive or at least liberal and had an ounce of compassion for their fellows. This guy has long hair and the only moron I can see is him. (Agreed, some of the rest of us are morans.) But, hey, these are the guys the GOPS get out to rally. After all, almost all of the party is cracker now. They're just sore cause a person of color landed in the White House.
