Ever been in one of those really fraught, slightly pathological hot-and-cold relationships?

The Washington Post, yesterday:

The chief lobbyist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Sunday complained about a White House campaign of "invectives" and "name calling" against his organization ...

Speaking on Fox News Sunday, longtime Chamber lobbyist Bruce Josten said the group's relationship with the White House began to sour after differences of opinion developed about President Obama's health care and economic agendas.

"Let's be clear, we haven't raised up the cain. It came from their side of the street," Josten said ...

Politico on Friday:

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has accepted an invitation to be the keynote speaker at a dinner for ...

... the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors on Nov. 4.

Ugh, Rahm at the Chamber -- talk about 'sleeping with the enemy'. I'm never sure whether the White House is torn between wildly divided factions, routinely divorces rhetoric from action as a way of keeping its base happy without making too many waves or is in the midst of a deviously brilliant campaign to drive its ideological opponents insane.

Digg!

If Rahm hasn't been behind all the leaks in the White House undercutting health care reform, bank reform, Gay Rights reform while stalling Iraq withdrawal and boxing Obama in on Afghanistan ...

Well ... The Buck Stops at Obama's desk and until Obama WsTFU I'm going to be in his s-h-i-t.

I don't think it's 'c'. In fact, I'm certain it's not c, because there wasn't really any additional driving necessary unless one is wedded to the idea of degrees of insanity.

A or B are interesting for conjecture, though.

Obviously, I think it's B. The one person that *has* to be on board is the CoS, and I think Obama and Rahm are on the same sheet of music.

I think Dem elites are really comfortable in their ability to rely on lesser evil appeals to win elections by way of rhetorical compare and contrast strategies with no basis in reality. It's evil, but it's pretty smart. I never thought the Dems lacked balls or brains. They're certainly capable and willing to tell their base to go to corporate hell on a daily basis with an almost fearless confidence.

I just think they have a hard time figuring out how to differentiate themselves with the GOP on most core issues and are largely doing what the GOP does to its base.

Granted, though, this is a confusing administration. The dissonance between rhetoric and action is even larger than the previous two regimes. Strange times.
