Limbaugh, Bolton and Other Right-Wingers Respond to Obama's Nobel Prize: Proof that He's the Anti-Christ, and Other Wing-Nut Theories

Posted by Adele Stan, AlterNet at 8:10 AM on October 9, 2009.

Former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton says Obama should give it back, Erick Erickson says it's an affirmative action prize, and ResistNet commenters find proof he's the anti-Christ.

When I learned this morning that President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, my heart sank -- not only because the award strikes me as coming too soon, but because the award will undoubtedly re-energize the right-wing fringe.  Even the venerable New York Times seemed to see that potential:

For Mr. Obama, the award could, in a strange way, prove a political liability. As he traveled overseas during his campaign for the presidency, he was subjected to criticism from Republicans who argued he was too much the international celebrity. Winning the Nobel at such an early stage in his presidency could further that kind of criticism, especially in Washington’s hyperpartisan political environment.

With right-wingers from Mike Huckabee to Phyllis Schlafly calling for the destruction of the United Nations, it was certain that, beyond the award itself,  this passage from the award citation would set them off:

“Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play.”

Obama was nominated for the award just nine days into his presidency, a fact that sticks in the craws of his detractors. I actually find it hard to argue with the assertion of some right-wingers that the award is meant more as a rebuke to former President George W. Bush than applause for the early, limited achievements of the current president. Thorbjorn Jagland, the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee even hinted as much, the Times reports:

“We have to get the world on the right track again,” he said. Without referring specifically to the Bush era, he continued: “Look at the level of confrontation we had just a few years ago. Now we get a man who is not only willing but probably able to open dialogue and strengthen international institutions.”

John Bolton, Bush's former U.N. ambassador, told The National Review that Obama should decline the award  (a move that would probably not play so well on the world stage):

“The Nobel committee is preaching at Americans, but they won’t be deceived,” says Bolton. “He should decline it and then ask to be considered again in three or four years when he has a record.”

“I was nominated three years ago and I’m still waiting for the call,” laughs Bolton. “Today’s news is just another demonstration of how politicized the Nobel Peace Prize has become, from President Carter winning in 2002, to Al Gore in 2007, and President Obama in 2009."

"When the award was given to President Carter, the chairman of the committee said that it was a 'kick in the leg' to the Bush administration," recalls Bolton. "This is yet another 'kick in the leg' for the Bush administration."

Then there are those who simply can't accept that a black man won the Nobel.  Here's Erick Erickson at Red State:

I did not realize the Nobel Peace Prize had an affirmative action quota for it, but that is the only thing I can think of for this news. There is no way Barack Obama earned it in the nominations period.

Back at the National Review Online, blogger Andrew Stuttaford, riffing on the internet craze of mocking American culture and just about anything through the character of Adolf Hitler at the time of his downfall, trots out a Hitler metaphor:

How Long Can It Be . . .

. . . before we see another Downfall rewording, this time with Hitler shocked and disappointed that he didn't win the Nobel Prize?

(And no, this is not a cunning attempt to compare the president to the Fuhrer . . .)

At ResistNet, home to the Fringy McFringers of the Tea Party movement -- gun nuts, birthers, and more Hitler analogists who apparently form the base of the Republican Party -- a discussion board takes on the topic of whether Obama's Nobel is proof that he is actually the anti-Christ. (ResistNet is a project of Grassfire, an astroturfing outfit with friends in high places -- like the U.S. Congress. Senator Jim DeMint and Rep. Mike Pence are Grassfire boosters.)

While taking my youngest granddaughter to the bus stop this morning @ 7:30, an announcement came over the radio that literally had me shaking. The announcer said "PRESIDENT OBAMA WAS JUST AWARDED THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE". Can someone please tell me how one man can have so many believeing every word he says? Lately I have been watching the History Channel who's subject has been centering on the ANTICHRIST. Go to their archives, people, and watch what the experts are saying. Then tell me what your opinion is about Mr Obama relative to that subject. It's not just an issue that the people of the United States were mesmerized by his talk, it appears now that the world has fallen for it. If never before, we MUST rise up and be stronger than ever

Reply by Worried Grammie

I'm not yet convinced he's the antichrist. I've done months of research on these thugs and there are powerful, filthy rich elitists behind this destruction of this country, who have been following a plan for decades. The thug in chief has been groomed for many years to be the one to finally take down America. If you're read the End Times series by Tim LaHaye, you can see where things are falling in place - I'm just not sure if he's the antichrist or the precursor. It's time to research who was on the nominating committee and who rendered the final decision and then start connecting the dots.

Reply by Larry Puckette

WGrammie, since you're researching anti-Christ.. you may find it interesting that there's a school-of-thought that has been around for a while that the anti-Christ is not a person, but a religion. I first looked into it about 25 years ago. It wasn't new then and world events since then have given it a high level of probability (in my eyes anyway). Although, there are the questions that prophecies project about human characteristics-like hypnotizing speaking capabilities, head wounds, etc...

Head wounds?

UPDATE:

Well, speaking of wounded heads, at least the talking kind, there's this from Rush Limbaugh (via Newsweek's The Gaggle):

“The Nobel gang just suicide bombed themselves. Gore, Carter, Obama, soon Bill Clinton. See a pattern here? They are all leftist sell-outs. George Bush liberates 50 million Muslims in Iraq, Reagan liberates hundreds of millions of Europeans and saves parts of Latin America. Any awards?” Limbaugh says “Obama gives speeches trashing his own country and for that gets a prize, which is now worth as much as whatever prizes they are putting in Cracker Jacks these days.”

Digg!

When I heard the news that Obummer won the Nobel Peace Prize I said to myself, they’ve got to be kidding. This is a guy who’s continued Bush’s wars and those wars, especially now in Afghanistan, has led to the death of thousands of innocent civilians. In this country he has continued the Reagan legacy of basically making all the citizens of this country serfs and wage slaves. We will get no significant health care legislation in which healthcare should be seen as a human right; in fact any legislation he signs will probably make things worse in terms of assuring the profits of the big health insurance and pharmaceutical companies. He and the Dipocrats in Congress are leaving us broke, destitute and without hope, so much for his sloganeering of Hope and Change. I call bullshit on Obummer and the Nobel committee.

I kind of agree that this is more a rebuke of the Bush era than a recognition of Obama who, to be fair, hasn't exactly achieved much other than not be Bush (no bad thing mind).

When I heard about this the first thing I thought was that the loonies are going to are going to react in a hilrious and utterly silly fashion to this. They didn't disappoint. That anti-Christ stuff is priceless.

President Obama is not the worst of the worst.

However, he has more mercenaries in Iraq than military personnel, he wants to expand into Afghanistan and has did something even George Bush would not ... bomb Pakistan.

Now hes giving ultimatums to Iran (who is complying with the law under IAEA & UN rules)

He also continued indefinite detentions to prisoners of war whom many had confessions extracted under torture. He also chose to not prosecute for torture.

What a peaceful guy. He deserves the peace prize like George Bush deserves a third chance.

This should stick in anyone's craw who gives a damn about ending these wars.

I thought it was a joke when I heard it.

A man who has more power than anyone else to affect a more peaceful world and has, in fact, done the opposite wins the Nobel Peace prize?

2 foreign wars (3 if you count Pakistan) that he could stop with little more than a word but won't.

Automatic disqualification.

Breathlessly awaiting the AntiChrist

Cant' you hear the Ecstasy in their questions.
These people don't fear the 'Anti Christ' - they anxiously await his arrival. The Anti Christ must preceed Christs- it is a Cause and Effect situation. Thus it is fair to say the 'End of Dayers' aren't just praying for Christs Return- but also Satans. Priority going to Satan since it is he who must come first to provoke Christs Return. They have to have as much faith in Satan's 'Resurrection' as they Do in Christ's.
These crazed zealots are so enraptured in the idea of the 'Final Battle between Good & Evil'- they will create one themselves if need be.
They see 'AntiChrists'everywhere, like they see Divine images in their grilled cheese sandwiches and potato chips. and frankly I think with as much glee and adulation.
Seems to me these folks are really asking not 'who is the Anti christ', but demanding God Prove to them He is the Almighty by defeating this latest version of His 'opponent'.
The Religious Right has become the Don King promoters of Celestial WWF Showdowns.
Heres a Hint shit heads-The Bible, including "Revelations" tells you God wins- as usual. He's not only the Undefeated World Champ- but He's the "One and Only One" Reigning Mr. Universe.
Their facination with Antichrists are heretical- it's underlying premise is that God is not Almighty, thus has the potential to lose. They afford Satan as much power as God.If they didn't they wouldn't bre so worried obout the outcome.Equal parts and powers to 'Light and Dark' are more akin to a duelist ideology, like Yin & Yang. A Direct Contradiction to a Montheistic ideology.

Robert Fuller, former president of Oberlin College says it best: "Obama got the prize not for doing, but for being. Not for making peace, but for exemplifying something new on the world stage -- the politics of dignity."

Dignity - something the GOP and the right wing does not have and knows nothing about.

Woodrow WIlson got the award for the League of Nations, which failed.

Desmond Tutu got the award for fighting apartheid, which went on for another ten years.

Tenzin Gyatso got the award for working for human rights in Tibet, which still has problems.

Aung San Suu Kyi got the award for her work in Burma; last time I looked, the place was still calling itself Myanmar.

Sadat & Begin and Arafat & Rabin got the award for working for peace in the Middle East.

Need I say more?

Unhappily, the Bush wars are still with us, as are many other vestiges of his criminal regime, but there is still a glimmer of hope. Maybe this reminder that the world is watching will give Obama the fortitude to resist the hawks that advise him and find his way out of Afghanistan. Maybe the Gitmo Uighurs will even be released in the US. Maybe the dems will finally stop mouthing the bi-partisan nonsense about "insurance reform" and propose single-payer? Maybe the DOJ will prosecute and hang "Tojo" Cheney. I'm not holding my breath, but simply on the principle that anything that excites the Republican loony fringe must be a good thing, congratulation President Obama!

Kudos to President Obama for his being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I grant you that it does seem a tad premature, but I am nonetheless happy for him and the country. And if this prize means that the rest of the world is watching him and us, and if it means that the world has great expectations for him and us, which expectations are symbolized in the Peace Prize, then I say good. Further, if the prize is in fact a rebuke to Bush and his criminal regime, then I say doubleplusgood, to borrow a word from Orwellian Newspeak. (Instead of a “kick in the leg,” however, I would have preferred a kick in the nuts.) And speaking of Newspeak, I would like to suggest some words that could be eliminated from the language for the betterment of humankind, words that all too often seep their way into comment threads and hinder reasonable discussion. They are: antichrist, evangelical, christian, and “God.”

I am a liberal, and for the first time in my long life I have been put on the side of the Rush Limbaugh's of the world. I had to look at the calendar because I thought it must be April Fool's Day when I heard the news that Obama had won. Mother Theresa, The Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, etc. deserved this award....Obama has never done anything to deserve it, and he never will. He continues the war and destruction of other countries, he threatens countries that we aren't at war with yet (but probably will be in the future, thanks to him), he supports Israel and any atrocities they decide to carry out, he continues with rendition and the Patriot Act...and this is worthy of the award??? Not to mention that the deadline for nominations was Feb. 1....so he got it for the first week or so of his term?? And now, 9 months into that term, he still has done nothing to justify this award. There is something rotten in Denmark...or I meant to say Norway.

Absurd? The formerly significant Nobel Peace Prize has now, once again been awarded to a
sitting president of the Unites States, solely
contrived on what he may or may not be able to
'accomplish' towards the goal of nuclear disarmament and perhaps some world peace.
It reminds me of how in recent years, in our educational systems, we reward so many undeserving students for their ersatz 'accomplishments'.
There was a time, when perhaps the Peace Prize
possessed a quality reputation; it was an honor to be selected, when long time achievement, dedication to a particular peace process actually had meaning.
But ever since the Prize went to Yasar Ararfat,
a man who once addressed the U.N. with a gun
strapped to his belt; ever since awarding it to
Jimmy Carter, who many call a racist against
Israel and the Jews, and who recently made
outlandish commentary as to how so many Americans dislike Mr. Obama because he's black. Just what we need; more incendiary remarks from a former President. And then there's the Prize going to Al Gore. Many of you know by now that one of the other nominees
was a German woman, who during the 2nd WW managed to save the lives of 2500 Jewish babies and children, before being caught.
The left wing, socialist agenda of the Oslo
oligarchs seems clear. Conspiracies aside, surely this smacks of what so many see as the
Euro-Western trend toward anti-semite, socialist one world government, with someone like Barack Obama as the stooge for their
means to an end. I wonder.

it was about US - the People of the United States of America. Make no mistake, it will be Obama who gets the ward and the money (although I would hope he will donate it to charity), but it as a message to the American People about what the world expects of us and those we choose to lead us. We were the de facto winners of this award because after years of allowing our leaders to alienate the world, we voted for peace, for change.

It is now up to us to live up to this award - not the President - US THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! We must hold our own elected officials accountable, we must hold those who spew hate and violence accountable, we must hold ourselves accountable if we fail to do so.

For too many years, I admit, I was willing to let government do its thing anyway they want to do. But, after 9/11 I realized that with my apathy, I had let a madman and his cabal into the White House. I vowed that I would do what I could to stop that from happening ever again. I hoped that with the election of Obama we had passed by so many of the things that turned this nation against itself, only to find that those who had laid the groundwork for the Bush policies were the ones dictating cabinet appointments or White House staffing in exchange for not destroying the Democratic Party. I realized that as an American I have a civic obligation to speak up and to hold those elected to the standard of protecting our Constitution and putting the needs of the American citizens first.

The fact that the Nobel Prize Committee saw fit to give our President the Peace Prize shows how the American People gave one man a chance to change the way we interact with the world and the world is recognizing that. If you oppose the wars, great - come to Washington with me and hold Congress, the President, and the military accountable to getting us out and capturing Bin Laden. If you oppose the Bush policies on the Environment - come to Washington with me and make your feelings known to Congress and the President and his Cabinet. If you oppose the corporate/military/industrial/religious complex that has taken over our government - come with me to Washington and say so.

Please go to my website and then plan on joining me on November 3rd, whether in DC or in your hometown or state, in sending a message not only to Obama and Congress, but also to the Nobel Committee - we hold our government accountable and we will live up to the promise for which this prize was given to our President.

In addition, he is not a Warmonger, is trying to THINK before striking or withdrawing, has already made us much more popular in the World & is a man most of us, who are also thinkers, can & do ADMIRE. What he has done (so far, MONTH NINE) is give many of Us (& Other Countries) HOPE.
That's more than we've had in eight LONG years & I, for one, think it feels pretty damn good. We have a president in Obama (Thank God!) who we can admire & work with –– I don't mean "them," I mean US!

Did I miss something? Aren't we still in Iraq and Afghanistan? Isn't Gitmo still open? Did they finally get rid of the Palestine ghettos near Israel where people have basically been treated worse than feral dogs?

Am sure I read somewhere that big business from banks to auto makers were bailed out while tax paying salt of the earth good Americans were still not able to avoid foreclosures. And I am sure I heard on NPR and major tv news that unemployment is over 12% in some states.

And President Obama gets the Nobel Peace Price based on what a handful of people who vote for the prize hope he does in the future?

Oh No, Another AntiChrist?

Calling someone the Antichrist assumes a lot. What makes everyone think that the U.S. is a Christian nation, or that the majority of its' citizens are, indeed, Christians? You can't prove it by our behavior as a nation, or, as a people.

When people start talking about the Antichrist it conjures the "Pot" and "Kettle" theme that we are all familiar with. And, while these Pot and Kettle people, once again, begin their long diatribe, they will be sidetracked from the real issues, like, health care for everyone, unemployment growing worse, the incredible debt we are incurring, the Wall Street dominated Congress and White House, our growing racism, the two wars we are fighting, and possible third war with Pakistan, and all the regular stuff we are dealing with on a daily basis.

I saw a clip on Rush Limbaugh railing on about Obama's peace prize. He was nearly apoplectic. And, John Bolton was getting so hot I thought his mustache was going to catch on fire. Boys, boys, take a pill. It isn't that bad.

If anyone should be called the Antichrist it should be Bush II, Cheney, and Rumsfeld, etc. Remember those guys. They were worse than Obama will ever be, but, you never know. We elected Obama because these guys were driving us crazy. Remember? Oh, I forgot; this is America; the land called stupid.

One more thing about the Antichrist; he will be Gods special messenger. I mean without the Antichrist there would not be a need for the Christ. And, if you try to identify the Antichrist, do so with trepidation, and ask yourself; is what I see really me?

Republicans, outraged--OUTRAGED, I SAY! That the rest of the world, far from sharing their opinion of our President Obama, have awarded him the Nobel Prize--should all go crawl into their holes.

Their leaders are smarter than the rest of these sheep. While the sheep B-A-A away against the President, they (except for Limp-Bough, Beck et al) mostly are shutting up.

Politically it's the only thing that they can do. When America did not win the Olympics bid, the Republican Rabble cheered. Now that our President, Barack Obama, has won the Nobel Prize, the Republicans BOO.

Now the American People are finally getting the right idea: Republicans are anti-American. If it's not THEIR idea of America--it's not America. Kinda like Hitler's Germany--if you weren't for Hitler's policies in the 30s, you 'weren't Aryan'. We see where that got the Germans. Thank God we didn't have to learn the same kind of a lesson.

Republicans--despite their Noise Machine--are and always have been the MINORITY in America. Every Republican votes. Many Democrats are too lazy to vote. That's how the Far Radical Right Wing gets to run things out of whack in America for so long.

Well, now we have to do TWO things: keep ourselves IN power, and work just as hard to keep the Republicans OUT of power. That is fairly simple--we just ALL HAVE TO GO VOTE ON ELECTION DAY.

Our problems alas arise when things have been good for a few years, and we ignore Election Day. That's what happened in 2000. Seems Americans have to suffer a while before coming to their senses and NOT IGNORING THE VOTING BOOTH ON ELECTION DAY.

The same right-wing assholes who criticized Obama for losing the Chicago Olympics bid are now criticizing him for winning the Nobel Prize. I'm hoping that the award is ruining Rush Limbaugh's and Glenn Beck's week.

Oil and opium rule the day

Let’s try and get a handle on what’s really happening in Afghanistan.

Prior to 911, the California based oil company Unocal wanted to build an oil pipeline through Afghanistan between the Caspian sea and Pakistan. For one reason or another, it was necessary to get rid of the Taleban before any work could proceed. Also, opium cultivation was at an all time low back in 2001

In 2001, only the US and Britain invaded Afghanistan,

In 2009, there are now getting on for 50 nations battling it out in that region for it is likely that there are many, many pipelines requiring protection from an enemy hell bent on destroying them.

Plus, Afghanistan is, and has been for a few years now, the world’s largest producer of opium.

People are not asking who is supplying the enemy with their weapons and fire power, stuff that is vital if a war is to be fought.

The individuals who profit from all of this are the shareholders of the oil companies, the weapons manufacturers, the arms dealers plus all the ancillary companies that are in some way involved.

All the motives that we are fed with – spreading of democracy, women’s rights etc - are shams and illusions.

The profits from this racketeering are so astronomically high and long term that the Capitalist money masters must be sinking untold amounts of money into the entire venture, and could go some way to explaining what the current financial crisis has been all about.

Pakistan must by now be reaping some reward, which is why we are now hearing frequent reports of car bombings and other atrocities.

Prior to 911, agreements could have been reached to exploit the oil resources in a peaceful fashion. That would have still left the problem of how to profit from the opium production which I understand the enemies of capitalism were committed to expunge back then.

Obama’s acceptance of the Nobel peace prize I believe needs to be seen in the light of the extent to which he will acquiesce in the continuation of Hell on earth for the millions of people whose lives are determined by a force that has no respect or regard for human suffering.

This is the life blood of homo sapiens – invasion, occupation and control of natural resources, for which Man can be divided into 5 categories – 1. the super rich shareholders. 2. the workforce who earn a living from building and manufacturing the weapons etc. 3. the military that use the weapons (on both sides) 4, those of us who drive motor cars and 5 the untold numbers of innocent people who suffer and get killed.

And of course the Governments who benefit from all the income and corporation tax.

nutcases whose comments were repeated in the article are responsible for the state of affairs that they complain so much about. Instead of blaming the current president why didn't they do their jobs as good citizens and research the politicians and party ideology they allowed to become the power in Washington for so many years? Do not think for one second that their foolish criticism of President Obama, blaming him for everything that is wrong with the country and the world, when those problems took years to create and were in fact the fault of the last eight years of incompetent governance, is going to be accepted without question and without acknowledgement of their own complicity in it. We have one comment mentioned in the article where some fool is crying because the US isn't thanked for the murder of millions of Arabs (we saved 50 million Arabs in Iraq) when in the first place Iraq was a country of 17 million people although since they have been saved there are a lot less of them left. When dealing with these types of uneducated idiots, and there are a lot of them in the US, you really can't explain the reality of the situation to them because they simply can't understand the truth. It actually is impossible to discuss anything with people whose minds are so egregiously twisted.

I like Alternet to much to listen to you buy into this crap. I could care less what these wingnuts say-- they are a very small part of the population -Quit giving these guys credibility by helping them to pretend they have much significant influence. It is about time that people started recognizing the majority elected who we wanted and we are going to do what we believe what is right and the only reference we need to do is expose their racist and hateful ways by demanding accountability. I heard Chris Rock give an logical explanation. George bush fucked up everything so bad a white man couldn't even get elected president in America. These nuts need to be told to quit whinning and see what they can do to improve their emotional deficits. They voted for George Bush, they pushed the war, they made the laws that let wall street rob us. The only thing we need to recognize about these fools is to demand they take responsibility for their own actions. They are the ones that got Obama elected. And Oh God how that must hurt. What a bunch of morons. They are not credibile
The anti wingnut
