Why Does The Onion Find Sexual Slavery Hilarious?

Posted by , Shakesville at 5:00 PM on September 7, 2009.

Its online store is selling a t-shirt that says "My friend went to Thailand and all I got was this lousy kidnapped prostitute."

Fans (and non-fans) of The Onion may be interested to see this NEW! item they are selling at The Onion Store:

The shirt says "My friend went to Thailand and all I got was this lousy kidnapped prostitute." Note the helpful disclaimer: "*Prostitute Not Included." Hmm. Must be "ironic."

Notice that the catalog entry just says "all I got was this lousy prostitute", but the shirt itself refers specifically to a "kidnapped prostitute."

The shirt does appear to be an actual item for sale, rather than a joke. I was hoping that it was a practical joke, where if you try to put the item in your cart, a big pop-up appears reading "MEGADOUCHE!" or "IronyFAIL!" or something. But alas, no--it just goes in your cart and tells you that you owe them $24.14 with shipping. Whee!

This shirt is available for men; apparently The Onion thinks it's hip for men specifically to joke about kidnapping sex workers. White (or light-skinned, at least) men, if you go by the models on The Onion Store site.

Just as an aside, I also see they charge extra for size XXL. Stay classy, Onion Store.

Here is contact information for The Onion, and customer service at The Onion Store (though customer service appears to be specifically for questions regarding orders).

Ever heard of satire, sarcasm, irony, or how about mocking.

It is a rough world out there and nothing is funny about kidnapped sex workers, that is the point through trivializing it in a satirical way it magnifies the travesty.

Sadly most people won't "get it" and the message will be lost. However, should those of us who have either educated ourselves or paid for some education continue to bow to the idiots by dumbing down? I think not, we should flaunt it and therefore amplify their idiocy.

The Onion is satire and that's the reason I don't read it. Of course, they're going to have articles and items disapproved of by the politically correct crowd. I've seen much worse t-shirts than this one, but I'm not out to censor or ban them. We still have some rights. Do you want them all taken away? That will come too soon, as it is.

It raises awareness about the issue. Nobody (sane) really wants a kidnapped woman, but now people are going to have to look at it and think.

The shirt is to be worn by the prostitute he did buy in Haiti.

After all child prostitutes don't need too many clothes, but they do need some.

On a different note, I was over at HuffPost checking out her piece on Van Jones,

Thank You, Glenn Beck!

It was pissing me off big time because it is such a puff piece for the 9/11 bull shit. I am really shocked Arianna would limit the conversation that way. I think it is nothing less than a terrible and deliberate skewing of the story.

She won't let anyone post who is critical of the official 9/11 story. She lets lots of post go through saying we are nuts, flakes, etc. Personally, I am tired of this kind of 9/11 slander, I think she should be called up on it.

NO!! It comes from a blog, called Voices Revealed, about themanwhospokewithhismind – and who is that? It's Phillip Garrido, a convicted sex offender and the abductor and likely rapist of Jaycee Lee Dugard, a vile wasteland of human scum who should probably be beaten severely and given a one way ticket to the whacko basket. He claims to have been given a device from God who taught Phillip how to speak with his mind, and he distributed the literature on the campus of University of California, Berkeley – one of the greatest centers of scientific learning in the U.S. Locking up this nut job, though it won't take large guaranteed loans at this point, would be well worth it.

It's so frustrating when somehow in an effort to make good modern liberal thinking funny, the only thing they can think to do is stick some misogyny in. We get it in the UK ALL the time!!

This article commenting on the T shirt from The Onion is on a par with the video entitled "Congressman demands to know who left the fish to rot on the House floor"

Flippant? Yes but eyecatching and makes people aware of serious matters from a different point of view

Are you kidding? Have you ever actually read The Onion? It's satire. It's supposed to slap you upside the head and make you outraged. It's supposed to call attention to a horrible thing and make people pay attention.

Don't ever go to TshirtHell; your head will explode.

Quite honestly, I think Americans tend to forget about the evils of of the sex slave trade that still exist.

No matter how poor the humor, the tshirt is a good reminder.

Would you look at someone wearing a tshirt that shows dying polar bears and say "climate change is nothing to joke about"?

Any publicity is good publicity for a problem.

The magnitude of the trade in sex slaves is vastly overstated by people who have ulterior motives. Proof? We have been hearing about the sex slave problem for many years now, but there have been hardly any sex slaves found, or slavers convicted.

I can always count on my favorite fun-loving (?) bunch of boys-and-girls to come up with something new and ridiculous to screech about.

These wretchedly paranoid “Henny-Pennies” spend all their time searching high-and-low for conspiracies, plots, sexism, racism and just about any other kind of “ism” they can think of so they can wring their hands, gnash their teeth and cry about how the sky is falling.

Well, my little “Henny-Pennies”, the sky IS falling and wasting time exposing “horrors” like some stupid tee-shirt that attempts a little satire, or, how Michael Jackson’s music wasn’t significant…or Black enough (at least, according to the overweight LATINA who wrote the article!) is just that:

A WASTE OF MY TIME!

Evidently, you think that you’re some biblical “Voice In The Wilderness” but, in reality, you are sounding more-and-more like a bunch of suspicious, obsessive whiners who are every bit as dour and unpleasant as the “religious right” (who are neither!) nut-jobs you love to rail against.

Keep it up, kiddies! Your continuing downward spiral into mediocrity has been noted and you’ve come a long way since your Glory Days as Bush-bashers…which was a good thing to be.

Satire.

I don't like kidnapping or sexual slavery any more than you, but seriously...
Don't you think this brings a sensitive subject to light? I know it made me think. That is an object of satire, is it not?

Grow up.

9-11 BS Again

This post had it all: The writer's viewpoint was silly enough but, unable to leave goofy enough alone, here come the Truther Moron Squad to skew things even further to the ridiculous. And Sister Lauren (a REAL paranoiac) chimes in as well.

The t-shirt "controversy" is a symptom of knee-jerk reactionism. Just read, add outrage and stir. Do not add thought. The mini-expose' of sex vacationing, the light shone on slave trafficking and the enlightenment of people that might otherwise never think about the subject can be disregarded. No need to diminish the dubious pleasure of your own sanctimonious outrage.

Then the truthers chime in. Not even serious discussion (as opposed to this tripe) is safe from intrusion by this low-grade baloney. I have commented on your warpage before, pointing out that the events of 9-11 consisted of two conspiracies -- the original malevolent one of Al Qaeda and the systemic conspiracy of stupidity that was the Cheney/Bush regime. No super powers or scifi demolition were needed to destroy the towers. The allegations you put forth are so weak tha they barely deserve even cursory consideration yet they have been seriously studied and THOROUGHLY DEBUNKED.

I have also -- at the risk of being accused of being part of the Big Pharma Conspiracy -- advised medication for your delusions. Sister Lauren, on the other hand, should just stay on her meds before she sees god again.

The one observable truth of the Christian religion is that the human race is somehow screwed up. Call it original sin or defective DNA, doesn't matter.
