So far, Glenn Beck's response to the wildly successful Color of Change boycott campaign has consisted of smearing CoC founder Van Jones and fuming that mysterious, unnamed forces are out to get him. Apparently, that's not the best way to convince spooked sponsors that you are not a demented liability -- Color of Change just announced that 11 more advertisers have ditched Beck's Fox show. That makes a total 57.

From the Color of Change Press release:

Eleven new companies whose ads were recently seen during Beck’s program—Binder & Binder, Capital One, The Dannon Company, Discover, HSBC, ICAN Benefit Group Insurance, Infiniti, Jelmar (manufacturer of CLR All-Purpose Cleaner), Jordan McKenna Debt Counseling Network, Mercedes-Benz and Simplex Healthcare (creator of the Diabetes Care Club) —have pledged to ColorOfChange.org to take steps to ensure that their ads don’t run on Beck’s show. Fifty-seven companies have now committed not to support Beck’s show since ColorOfChange.org launched its campaign four weeks ago after the Fox News Channel host called President Obama a “racist” who “has a deep-seated hatred for white people” during an appearance on Fox & Friends.

“We applaud those companies that have recently pulled their support from Beck,” said James Rucker, executive director of ColorOfChange.org. “There are at least 57 companies who will not tolerate Beck’s race-baiting comments and we will continue to reach out to those who are still supporting him.”

Comments from advertisers recently distancing themselves from Beck:

In a phone conversation with ColorOfChange.org on Wednesday, Kathy Adkins, a Capital One spokesperson, confirmed that Capital One had instructed Fox News not to run the company’s ads during Beck’s program. “We don't plan on running any more ads on the Glenn Beck Show,” said Adkins.

“We have checked with our advertising area and have confirmed that a few ads ran on the Glen [sic] Beck Show as part of a FOX TV buy at the beginning of August,” said Tommy Shi, Diversity and Inclusion Officer at Mercedes-Benz USA, in an email to ColorOfChange.org, “but no ads have run since on that show, nor are there plans to do so moving forward.”

“Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) considers its commitment to Diversity and Inclusion [sic] an integral part of its corporate culture and business strategy,” Shi added. “We believe that MBUSA's success is dependent on embracing the various cultures, nationalities and convictions of our associates and market that translate into meeting consumer needs and expectations for relevant products and services.”

“Discover is committed to supporting a wide variety of programming that features a diversity of talent, topics and opinions,” said Mai Lee Ua, Project Manager for Public Relations at Discover, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. “Our current TV buys do not include any future airings on the Glenn Beck Show." She later added, “Our ads will not run during the show”.

“Infiniti has not placed any advertisements on this program for several weeks, and have no current plans to advertise on it in the future,” said Kyle W. Bazemore, Senior Manager of Product Communications at Infiniti, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. Bazemore later confirmed, “We have indeed instructed Fox not to place our ads on this program at this time.”
“We ceased advertising on the program and have no future plans for advertising on it,” said Cindy Savio, Vice-President of Public Affairs for HSBC-North America, in an email to ColorOfChange.org.

“We have requested that they [Fox News] re-schedule the spots,” said Dick Summer, Communications Director for Binder and Binder, in an email to ColorOfChange.org.

“Dannon doesn't plan to run any more ads on the program and we have informed the network of this,” said Michael J. Neuwirth, Senior Director of Public Relations for The Dannon Company & Danone Waters of America, in an email to ColorOfChange.org.

“We have contacted FOX News and demanded that our commercial not be run during the Glenn Beck show,” said Keith J. Waring, a spokesperson for the Jordan McKenna Debt Counseling Network, in an email to ColorOfChange.org.

“Please be advised that as of 8/28 we have fully removed ourselves from advertising within the Glenn Beck Show,” said Robyn Warren, a spokesperson for Koeppel Direct, the agency of record for Simplex Healthcare, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. “Due to remnant buying that was in place, the lead time on pulling our advertising took longer but has been resolved.”

In a phone conversation with ColorOfChange.org on Monday, Dee Halloran, a spokesperson for ICAN Benefit Group, confirmed their request that Fox News not allow the company's ads to air during Glenn Beck's show.

“Jelmar typically cannot target specific shows or programming, and did not have a media buy specifically in place for Glenn Beck,” said Adrienne Gibbons, Marketing Director for Jelmar, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. “We have chosen at this time to ask that FOX News keep our advertising from this program.”
Four weeks ago, ColorOfChange.org called on its members to sign a petition urging companies who advertise on Glenn Beck to cut off their advertising support of his work. Shortly after reaching 150,000+ signatures, ColorOfChange.org began emailing those who signed the petition, asking them to call five major advertisers who continued to refuse to pull their ads: Clorox, Experian (creator of FreeCreditReport.com), Lowe’s, Red Lobster and Vonage. To date, Red Lobster is the only company in the group that has not yet responded. ColorOfChange.org still continues to reach out to those companies found running advertisements during Glenn Beck’s programs.

Previous companies who have corrected advertising errors and/or pulled their ads entirely include Airware Inc. (makers of Brez anti-snoring aids), Allergan (maker of Restasis), Ally Bank (a unit of GMAC Financial Services), Ancestry.com, Applebee’s, AT&T, Bank of America, Bell & Howell, Best Buy, Blaine Labs Inc., Broadview Security, Campbell Soup Company, ConAgra, Clorox, CVS, DirecTv, Ditech, The Elations Company, Experian (creator of FreeCreditReport.com), Farmers Insurance Group, GEICO, General Mills, Johnson & Johnson (makers of Tylenol), Kraft, Lawyers.com, Lowe’s, Men’s Wearhouse, NutriSystem, Procter & Gamble, Progressive Insurance, RadioShack, Re-Bath, Regions Financial Corporation, Roche, Sam (Store and Move), SC Johnson, Sanofi-Aventis, Sargento, Sprint, State Farm Insurance, Traveler’s Insurance, Travelocity, The UPS Store, Verizon Wireless, Vonage and Wal-Mart.

Maybe someone needs to start putting flyers about Glenn Beck on their cars parked outside while the people are inside eating. They may decide that Red Lobster supports racism, and maybe they shouldn't be eating there.

How many people watch Glenn Beck? How many people are members of the Color of Change? The smart thing for any company to do is remain neutral on this topic. It is pretty simple actually-> Our companies decisions on advertising are determined internally. We appreciate your opinion and will take it into consideration when we determine who we will advertise with.
I will not do business with any company that publicly boycotts Glenn Beck or anyone else for that matter. I have already emailed all of these companies to let them know.

Is anyone else astounded by the sheer number of sponsors there are for one single show? Holy cow! Is it any wonder it's impossible to get untainted news anywhere anymore, if all news programs--regardless of political leanings--are beholden to dozens (hundreds?) of masters? I had no idea.

Peace.

He's like that idiot on the conservative side of every public debate who makes moronic "points" and generally makes your argument for you: Namely that you have to be a colossal fucktard to think anything along the lines of what this guy is saying.

Granted, it's tough to embarrass a neocon. They're just not that sharp. But they're already a lost cause and that isn't who progressives need to win over. Let this monkey keep crying, screaming, ranting, and acting like the fool that he is. The more reasonable people see of that behavior the better.

All these companies have not cancelled advertising with Faux News, they have just moved them off the Glenn Beck program and rescheduled them to other shows, like O'Reilly and Hannity. Faux still makes just as much money, so they can still afford to pay Beck to stir up the right wing retards and teabaggers who watch his show and take it seriously.

Withdrawal of advertising would work, changing the times they are shown does not.

If one looks at the title, "Walkertx" and pay attention to the "tx" part, one may assume he is from Texas, the wannabe heart of the Beck universe. The local McDonald's here in Decatur, TX has a wide-screen flat panel TV in the booth seating area on which the Fox noisework plays all day regardless of who's watching.

I complained and said I was not coming there as their "entertainment" causes sane people to have indigestion.

Unfortunately, Mad King George 43 lives only about 70-miles away in an exclusive area of north Dallas. I'm planning on moving out of theocracy central as soon as possible.

Excuse me, but if I understand correctly, 57 sponsors have told Fox they don't want their ads running in GB's show. They seem to be still spending the same amount of money at Fox, just during different time slots. So while CofC is doing a lot for AlterNet triumphal postings, it's not doing anything at all to Fox's bottom line. And that's what has to hurt if you're going to get Glenn Beck off the air. It sounds like all CofC has done is turn Beck into a supersalesman for ads on Fox's other programming... Is this something to congratulate ourselves for?

May I suggest a list of who might be next?
1. Rush Limbaugh

3. O'Reilly, although he is amusing as standup.

One last thought... let's tickle the sponsors with praise for their courage in advertising on Keith, Rachel and Ed?

I note that the "commitments" are all worded with an open end. ".....we have no further plans to run ads on the Glenn Beck show." I applaud the Color-of-Change success, but I fear that the advertisers may have an easy and perhaps intended re-entry strategy.

When you take the lead in and bleed over to other shows, CoC actions are meaningless. Beck had great numbers last week. Still translates into increased viewership across the Fox line-up. Most of the 57 didn't buy Beck specific schedules anyway.

It also helps to polarize more Americans, to make event more folks wary of President Urkel and the Circle of Czars. Just wait until November 2010, then we will see who's in charge here. Jones, Sunstein, Lloyd - they all got to go

I bet Barry is the last Democratic President for decades.

Actually, MANY of those advertisers have stated that they will not advertise on ANY talk show at all, which means that perhaps there won't be so many talk shows soon. I can't decide if that's a good thing or not.

However, one must wonder how showing an unedited video of someone's own words can be a smear, racist, or anything but simply reporting. ???

other peoples' right to free speech. Once again, you exercise YOUR right to free speech in an attempt to infringe on that right for those who hold dissenting opinions. Do you need to be reminded AGAIN that it is precisely unpopular speech that the Constitution protects?

With Beck you don't stop at trying to stifle his speech, you go even further and attempt to interfere with his ability to earn a living, and/or with Fox's ability to earn a profit. There is a law against that and Fox or Beck may choose to employ it. Just as you do not have the right to yell "fire" in a crowded theater, you do not have the right to disrupt the legal enterprise of another. Voicing your disagreement with Beck's opinions is okay; attempting to organize an attack against him and/or Fox in order to negatively impact their business is not. One would hope that your morality would be sufficient to stop you from ruining a man's career and destroying his ability to support his family simply because you disagree with his opinions. Obviously, one would be wrong.

I saw the Beck segment you refer to and he clearly did NOT describe Obama as racist. Beck's comment was about his personal feelings, concerns and speculations about Obama. You attributed conclusive meaning to Beck's comments that he neither stated nor implied. This appears to be an attempt to damage his reputation and stir up a campaign to run off his advertisers, make his show unprofitable for Fox, and thereby threaten his employment.

As for Beck's speculation about Obama's possible "deep seated racial hatred," Beck simply voiced what a lot of us are wondering about. Obama seems to be distracted by his own internal race war. He seems irritated by his white heritage and inconvenienced by the fact of his upper middle class upbringing, a lifestyle of privilege and access that the majority of Americans cannot even imagine. He clearly identifies predominantly not only with his black roots but with the black radicalism with which he was inculcated before he was old enough to think for himself. And he so seldom acknowledges his white ancestry that we might infer he would prefer that we forget it altogether. All that, together with what we know about his early training in Marxism and about his known associates, is ample reason for any thinking person to wonder about his possible racial prejudices. Beck is not the only American who senses Obama's racial disquietude, and he will not be the only person to comment on it. Speculating about or commenting on what someone's racial attitudes might be is not the same thing as saying that the person is racist. In the interests of accuracy and professionalism, not to mention ethics, you should edit your work to accurately reflect what Beck said.

While I commend these companies for not advertising on the Beck Show it is not because they care one whiff about what Beck has to say but rather because they are afraid of losing money. Most of America think that the corporations think like us and that is serious mistake. The bottom line is their only concern and they will kill if they have to to protect that almighty dollar.

I'm involved with several orgs., but it's time to add ColorOfChange to the list. They have really kicked some right-wing butt! Let's all get vocal with anyone we know that frequents Red Lobster. I, personally, cannot stomach the mouth-breathing stretchpant-wearing crowd, and mercury-laden fare. But I know there's one of those places in my city. I'm going to try the flyer thing, here. I've already called the co's. headquarters several times.

As a sidebar, I heard Mike Malloy on Air America today, saying that, now, two major advertisers have pulled out of FOX altogether. Anyone got more on that? And, let's keep going, and bring FOX down to where it belongs. Fully discredited and unemployable.

Unfortunately due to his ratings even if most of the advertisers drop they are not dropping the channel, so he will stay on the air. Those same ads get spread around the network and just rearranged so they don't fall on that block, FOX'news' isn't loosing money, and they know that the fools who watch his show will most likely stick around and watch their other faux news shows. As far as I have heard so far only Clorox and UPS dropped the channel entirely, and that's the only way they will ever feel this pressure, and the only way for this to work.
Most of these same advertisers are still getting to air for this same 'target audience' just with out looking like they are!
If you want to join the boycott then don't just drop the show, drop the network!
