Texas Revising History Textbooks: Liberals Out; Limbaugh, Gingrich, NRA In

The Texas State Board of Education review committee is preparing to vote on a draft of proposed standards for history textbooks. Noting that the draft has "nothing about liberals," the Houston Chronicle reported:

The first draft for proposed standards in United States History Studies Since Reconstruction says students should be expected "to identify significant conservative advocacy organizations and individuals, such as Newt Gingrich, Phyllis Schlafly and the Moral Majority." [...] Others have proposed adding talk show host Rush Limbaugh and the National Rifle Association.

The 15-member committee, stacked with 10 Republicans, is expected to vote along party lines. Earlier this year, a panel of right-wing "experts" produced a report urging the committee to remove biographies of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Stephen F. Austin, César Chávez, and instead add history about the "motivational role the Bible and the Christian faith played in the settling of the original colonies."

Digg!

What the Hell Is Maureen Dowd Talking About?
As far as I can tell, Dowd wants Obama to be more like Bugs Bunny. And Arnold Schwarzenegger. You know, so he can keep us safe from Barney Rubble.

The complaint is that most text books especially history, favors liberal biased and misstatement of facts. Maybe someone is waking up! Leave it to the left and they'll have the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor as our fault!

Go read the comments on the SPLC if you want to get a good sampling of nutcases. Hey people, don't you have a town meeting or two to go scream at? As for the standards, big surprise. They went after science, now they are going after history. They also imposed Bible study classes in public schools. They are just begging for a lawsuit. Texas is Texas.

It should be noted that many states in the US buy whatever textbooks for their school-kids that Tex-ass buys!

This isn't only Texas' problem!

Please don't give up on TX. I know it's the land of GW Bush, but there are plenty of liberals out there, especially educators, who try to fight the good fight.... Try to teach critical reasoning here in the Bible-and-guns belt, especially when the ministry of "miseducation and brainwashing" is working against you.

and in fact I have given up on the entire south. We just drove cross country and back in a loop, and I made a special effort to avoid as many red states as I could. When I couldn't, I spent very little money there. My dislike for Texas is only exceeded by my dislike for f-in FLORIDA. BOth of them gave us george w. and idiot populace.

men who practiced multiple marriage infidelities and are convicted substance abusers like Gingrich and Limbaugh.

Many in the state who consider themselves "Christian" still adore the wife and political party swapping Ronald Reagan who was accused by his first wife of "Extreme Mental Cruelty", to marry a 3 month pregnant Nancy.

What Drugs are these Lone Star Staters on?
Do you get your supply from your Vet?
Perhaps we should start calling them the 'Lone Synapsis' State. All circuits are not operational.
Bump a peice on George Washington for Bible characters? What part of the phrase 'Founding Father' confuses them? What aspect of "Separation of Church and State" Eludes them?
What do they think their ancestors agreed to when they sought Statehood? Could it be they agreed to first and foremost hold the US Constitution as the Highest Law in the Land? And Who presides over the protection and defense of said document- the Federal gov't, you say? Then State Rights do not exceed the powers of the Federal powers, as a matter of a condition of Statehood. Otherwise we would be nothing more than a European Union Style affiliation. Not so, as Confirmed in our very name, UNITED States of America. Love it or Leave it,TX!

is that Texas is one of the major states for publishing. If Texas adopts that, so will about 7-10 other states (that might be on the low side, forgot the exact number). California, NY, and Florida are the other major adoption states.

Texas has alot of things right but this is not it. Information about our country is very important, and should be taught in school. To many of the text books used in schools are very liberal biased, it's a simple fact. there were christian influences during the early settlement of this country. In fact, the pilgrams left england because of religious persecution. they were made to worship the state religion, which was the anglican chruch. you had to go to this church because it was the only religion that was allowed to be practiced. You cannot find the phrase " seperation of church and state" in the constitution, and it was only used in a letter from thomas jefferson. yet we have made this letter, which has not one thing to do with the constitution, dictate a whole movement of liberal nuts. the history of our nation should be taught as it happened, and the religious influences should be taught with it. the constitution is very clear in what it states and it does not need any clarification of itself. if things continue heck we will not even have the right to own or posess a gun of any type. The problems we have now come from the fact that children are not taught any thing about character, how to be decent, and have any form of morality anymore.this teaching starts in the home and continues in the classroom, but wait if that happens someone may be offended. I say its time that some people get offended, and if you do not like the way things are here, in America, then there are plenty of trains, cars, planes and boats leaving here each day. Be on one of them.

Is this a secret vote or do parents have a say? I would never stand for my child being taught about Phyllis Shitfly or Rush Blahblah. Next they will just bring tv's in class and broadcast FAUX NOISE all day. They will call it a green class to show us Liberals they care about the environment. At least until one of us points out it is open sewage and noise pollution, all at the same time.

but the Riverwalk in San Ant. is nice.
"REPUBLIC OF TEXAS" has a nice ring to it. Throw in a few of the deep south states whose stop signs I'm disproportionately paying for and that'll be just about right.

Texas is merely the rest of the nation on steroids

Any serious student of American history understands that the trends we see coming out of Texas have their roots in early American history. Again, read de Tocqueville. As a culture, we have generally tended toward the hysterical (especially in matters of religion), the greedy, the violent, the selfish, and the mentally incurious. In fact, in popular American culture we have held these standards up to be desirable, or, as evidence of some form of moral or patriotic pureness.

For awhile, we got close to becoming the nation we told the rest of the world we wanted to be. But greed and ignorance, based in a pernicious form of Christianity (notably Puritanism), and a pernicious form of capitalism, won out.

Can you imagine a country in which a large number of people found out about the attack on Pearl Harbor while listening to the New York Philharmonic on the radio? Can you imagine there was a time where shows like Alistair Cooke's "Omnibus" were on network television?

All gone now. The Philistines in American life continue to hammer down all forms of higher culture: art, literature, rational debate, philosophy, music, as well as traits of developed cultures such as wisdom, compassion, and respect for our environment. All in the name of God, power and cold hard cash.

And they celebrate this rape of decency. For many, like progressive-life, it allows them to salve their inadequacies by being on the winning side, much like weaker personalities identify with the bullies on the playground. For others its generates fun, power and profit.

Why are we so docile in the face of what has happened? This article is a perfect example of why: we are brainwashed into buying into the sick American cultural matrix from birth. From the first flickers of the TV through the crib slats, we are fed a never ending stream of violence, profiteering and Jesus Christ, all wrapped up in a manufactured patriotic mythology accented by the imagery of thousands of American flags.

It is a wonder that anyone emerges from such a lifelong cultural brainwashing able to think rationally and think for themselves. Indeed, cozy members of the hive must think we are irretrievably weird and must hate us for challenging all of the myths and values that they have inculcated deeply all of their lives.

As I have said before, this can't end well. We may say the influence of this pernicious right wing worldview may be outsize of their numbers but remember what they control: business and commerce, including the majority of hiring companies, both political parties (and therefore the government), the media, the police and the military.

Hitler said 10 percent of the activists carry along with them, the mass of the population. That may very well be the case in the USA as well.

These are simple facts that any history book worthy of the concept should include.

Right-wingers think they are in a cultural battle where their only goal is to win. They will try any tactic as long as it helps them win. Truth, facts, history, science all go out the window because that won't help them win.

That leaves them at the opposite end of the truth spectrum on many issues. Most of them now think fascism was a left-wing phenomenon.

Note to committee: Make sure you get in there the part about Chuck Norris being at the Alamo and kicking scores of Mexicans asses before being knocked unconscious and left for dead so he could return years later and singlehandedly win the Vietnam War.
