Glenn Beck's Advertisers Dropped Air America

Posted by AlterNet Staff, AlterNet at 6:00 PM on August 13, 2009.

How could any major brand be tied to the right-wing extremist?

In the past few weeks, a Color of Change boycott campaign has prompted at least 4 companies to pull their advertising from Glenn Beck's Fox TV Show. But a ton of advertisers are loyally sticking around, despite the fact that Beck continues to unapologetically spew divisive hate speech.

Turns out, some of these very same companies dropped advertising from the progressive talk radio station Air America back in 2006. Megan Carpentier on Air America Media writes:

Three years ago, a group of corporate advertisers informed ABC that they didn't want their commercials run during Air America programming. Media Matters reports that those companies will run ads during conservative shows.

In 2009, General Electric, Farmer's Insurance and Office Depot have financially supported Glenn Beck's racism and threats against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the radio; Bayer, Chattem Pharmaceuticals and Wyeth have given Lou Dobbs money to continue his radio-based support for the Birther conspiracy theorists and his portrayal of the current Administration as alternately Socialist, Fascist and Communist; and Home Depot, JC Penney's and Office Depot are helping provide Rush Limbaugh promote his racist, divisive commentary on a daily basis.

That doesn't even include the companies that advertise during Glenn Beck's or Lou Dobbs' television shows, which additionally includes the likes of Bayer, Wal-Mart and Nestlé.

While advertising is supposedly just a way to convince consumers to purchase products, these corporations' histories of political contributions and advocacy--in addition to their stated preferences to have their products associated with Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh rather than Rachel Maddow or Ron Reagan--reflects less a clear-eyed view of consumer preferences than it does support for conservatives and conservative causes.

Take General Electric, a supporter of both Glenn Beck's radio and television programming. In the 2006 election cycle, when they first blacklisted Air America's programming, their PAC's political contributions were two-thirds in favor of Republicans. In 2008, after the takeover of the House by Democrats and while Barack Obama's win was clearly telegraphed, GE continued to favor Republicans with contributions disproportionate to their power in Washington, giving them 48 percent of the PAC's donations. Only now that GE has nowhere else to turn, their donations for the 2010 election cycle are going two-thirds of the time to Democrats. To the victors go the spoils, I guess--as long as they can spend at least an equal amount of money supporting media programming intended to derail the agenda.

Impact

I don't know how significant the impact to these various corporations might be if some (probably) small number of people try to boycott them for not pulling their ad money from Fox, etc... but I agree that the pressure needs to be asserted, and I am glad there are organizations like Color of Change to help direct such action.

Of course, if we all try, as much as possible, to shop and buy locally, we can help avoid such situations in the first place. Or, at least, we could have... but then, Wal-Mart has killed most local businesses across America already, hasn't it?

Spying on civilians, Home Depot

Home Depot, I believe, put some kind of tracking device in a tool I bought.

I announced on-line that I planned to get a Dremmel for Christmas so I could make stone pipes. When my husband and I went to Home Depot, I felt like many people were paying attention to me. This wasn't something my husband could handle at all.

On the cord was as EMT device. It looked very sophisticated and said "do not remove." Naturally I removed it. I didn't want an electromagnetic signal being sent god knows where telling them when or where I was using my tool.

With a small plane local airport nearby, I assumed it could be a signal transmitter. My family thought I was freaking nuts. There was a lot of harassment I was being subjected to, some of them were doing it.

Starbucks is another business I don't trust.

My daughter was working there and they trained her as a manager to cheat on little things like 'sharing' the tips. When her dad and I would point out it was an illegal practice, she would get angry and defensive. She was very anti-pot, really abusive about it to me, and coffee was the perfect drug, to be used to excess with abandon.

If so then they are hedging their bet- no wonder they've been around for so damn long- playing both sides of the street. Profits wise- proabably smart. But PR wise, very foolish. Historically has GE always played the middle between oppressive and progressive politics ?
"If you dont' stand for something, you'll Stand for anything" is rather disturbing for such an huge International Conglomerate like GE. What other countries is GE playing this game? Even if they only sold lightbulbs, helping gin up a civil conflict should be considered not only propaganda, but war profiteering.
A type of 'Morals Clause' should be instituted for Co's who fly our flag and advertise as American made. First - their products must be solely American made. Second they must conduct themselves At American standards, regardless if on foreign soil. Third, can not aid in the perpetuation of social conflict effecting nations of operations. Fourth, a % of profits is required to be donated to social programs, above & beyond their meager taxes. They fire or layoff hoards of workers, devastate communities by relocating- those displaced workers (communities) end up on our 'payroll', medical coverage,...
Being an American Corp has it's priviledges, It also has its responsiblities to uphold the Values Our Founders declared. "American Made" is still held in high regard. Those two facts alone increase their marketablity, tthrough increased territory and product sales.
When handed unfettered Liberties to the Market place and the labor market, Corps have the propensity to abuse both. It is time to implement some Enhanced Schooling techniques in Ethics, morals and social conscienousness.
As a global community we must work together to rein in the excess of greedy and unscrupulous.
They have not only devastated communities, but environements. These Corps move around the country and the world like cyclones destroying all means of civilatuion in their path- not just the physical manifestation, but also the psychological and sociological.
Trade,Commerce,industrial....are all adaptive 'tools' meant to aid humans and humanity, not enslave it.
When multinational conglomerates own and control so many facets of civilization- That is Not a Free Market, or Free Man. The antithesis of what America Stands For.

Conservative GE a mixed bag

G.E. does have a history of Republican/Conservative bias. Yet, money seems to count in their ad calculus. After all, while they don't advertise on Rachel Maddow, they own NBC which owns MSNBC, which airs Rachel M, Ed, Keith O, et al, which are all left of center. MSNBC is the counter point to FoxNews, if not CNN. So, it's a curious spread of political support. Is it that profit trumps politics?
