Biden: It is Israel's 'Sovereign Right' to Decide Whether to Attack Iran

Is it just me or were Joe Biden's comments on Stephanpoulos [Sunday] somewhat ... uhm ... startling?

Plunging squarely into one of the most sensitive issues in the Middle East, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. suggested on Sunday that the United States would not stand in the way of Israeli military action aimed at the Iranian nuclear program.

The United States, Mr. Biden said in an interview broadcast on ABC's "This Week," "cannot dictate to another sovereign nation what they can and cannot do."

"Israel can determine for itself -- it's a sovereign nation -- what's in their interest and what they decide to do relative to Iran and anyone else," he said, in an interview taped in Baghdad at the end of a visit there.

The remarks went beyond at least the spirit of any public utterances by President Barack Obama, who has said that diplomatic efforts to halt Iran’s nuclear program should be given to the end of the year. But the president has also said that he is "not reconciled" to the possibility of Iran possessing a nuclear weapon -- a goal Tehran denies.

Mr. Biden's comments came at a particularly sensitive time, amid the continuing tumult over the disputed Iranian elections, and seemed to risk handing a besieged President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a new tool with which to fan nationalist sentiments in Iran.

What was not immediately clear was whether Mr. Biden, who has a long-standing reputation for speaking volubly -- and sometimes going too far in the heat of the moment -- was sending an officially sanctioned message.

I haven't heard any outcry about this so far, so perhaps I'm just not up to speed on the latest thinking. Does this seem like a good idea to anyone at this particular moment? The biggest headline on the front page of the NY Times today was

"Leading Clerics Defy Ayatollah on Disputed Iran Election"

Does this strike you as a good moment for the U.S. to be talking about Israel bombing the place?

In other news, in answer to a question about whether the stimulus was adequate, Biden also said that everyone had misread how bad the economy was back in January, which I think is nonsense. Everyone knew that the economy was in very, very deep trouble. It was politics that made the stimulus inadequate, not imperfect knowledge.

I understand why he would say it, but I don't think it rings true considering all the talk about the "worst economy since the Great Depression" at the time. Plus, I think it's a weak play. They knew that even the best stimulus would take time to kick in -- they said so then -- so they should just stick to their guns. "No one could have predicted" excuses are lame in most cases, but especially lame in this one.

It would be interesting to know if Biden is on message or if he did his usual free association. And I suppose it's always possible that the administration has begun to use his reputation for freelancing to get out messages they don't necessarily want to officially endorse. You always get the feeling that Biden is actually blurting out truths that nobody else wants to take credit for so maybe they are putting that to work for them.

(I'm still not sure why anyone would think that chattering about Israel's sovereign right to bomb Iran at this particular moment is a good idea, but maybe they think this will help lower the temperature somehow?)

Digg!

This is truly whack.

Bush Administration Iraq war rationalizer John Bolten has been getting an op/ed published for the past three months saying exactly what Biden and the Obama administration are now saying about the need to ignite a nuclear conflagration with Iran with an Israeli aggression as the front.

I see fewer and fewer differences and distinctions between the Obama administration and the Bush administration. Single party rule by any other name is authoritarianism.

It's called diplomatic pressure, including threatening the billions in military aid we send them. We do it all the time and have done so for a long while now. (Except with Israel.) We've never been in the habit of worrying about other nations' sovereignity when doing so, either. (Except with Israel.)

This is Obama telling Israel it's open season on Iran. He might as well have sung:
"Bomb Bomb Bomb"
"Bomb Bomb Iran"
Does he have any thought what repercussions this will have on Service Men and Women in Iraq and Afghanistan?
Is he trying to force America to become independent of foreign oil?
Does he realize that, for most intents and purposes, Iran is already a nuclear power, and that they don't need an ICBM to deliver a payload of dirty bombs to the US, making all of our major cities uninhabitable for the near future.
Sovereign or whatever, the US government does have influence on Israel. It is in our interest to exercise that influence.

They are Zionists they said. They certainly aren't Jews since many here in America and Israel (around the world) want peace in the area.

They should both be impeached since their loyality seems to be not for our best interest (nor the other countries in the area).

Its it the sovereign right of Iran and every other nation in the area... including the Palestinians... to attack Israel???

Why is this one nation so special?

Oh, and also... No one has even come close to proving that Iran is actually pursuing nuclear weapons.

without one peep from our President or even our pathetic main stream media. Israel arrested a former US government official and a Nobel Peace Prize winner in international waters and nothing was said. Imagine what would happen if Iran had arrested a US official in International waters. AIPAC would have have called all dogs to nuke Iran on the spot.

Biden said it clearly: Israel is a grandfathered- in free-range terrorist sovereigncy that can do what it desires to anyone, and that includes the "US" in the USofA. It's ok with US if Israel, a sovereign nation, attacks Iran--US will not interfere. But if Iran attacks Israel, US will be supportively on the Israeli military side passing out supplies of weaponry and advisors. The word "aovereign" has joined the bizarro world of double-speak.

I fear that, Biden floated the Obama trial balloon against Iran. If he didn't then he's an irresponsible jerk. If he did then Obama is an irresponsible jerk. Israel lost it's edge in Lebanon with the help of George Bush.... Lebanon was a piece of cake compared to Iran. At some point, as the Persians and Arabs watch their women and children slaughtered by Israel, they're going to decide to keep fighting to the last man. As the bellicose Israel grew out of their mishandling by the Germans, so they are watering the seeds of their own destruction by their mistreatment of the Palestinians and their surrounding neighbors.

Biden's comment that Israel 'Israel can determine for itself ... what's in their interest and what they decide to do relative to Iran and anyone else." is outrageous. It's the sort of typical political, devoid of human concern flip remark that we don't want to see in todays world, most especially given Israel's history and propensity for violence. I am utterly disgusted to hear such words from our vice president. Booooooooooo!

The USA is occupied by Israel

just as much as the Palestinians are. The occupation comes because so many American Jews and radical Christians who believe in "The Rapture" are aiding and abetting Israel in all its illegal actions. The Israelis use the Christians, who think that the "End of Times" will actually come. Then there are those brainwashed Americans who think that Israel is actually our "friend." Slavemaster would be more apt. All I can say is that when Israel attacks Iran, the Israelis will find that the Iranians are not an easy mark. Then the USA will be called upon to jump in and save Israel's bacon (pun) but I'm not laughing at what the results will be. I feel as if I'm on a runaway train with Obama and Biden and the rest of our (bought-and-paid-for-OR-pressured-by-Israel) government at the wheel.

Bush/Chaney/Rice = Obama/Biden/Clinton

Here are the same quotes only with the names of the countries changed: Pakistan for Israel and India for Iran:

The United States, Mr. Biden said in an interview broadcast on ABC's "This Week," "cannot dictate to another sovereign nation what they can and cannot do."

"Pakistan can determine for itself -- it's a sovereign nation -- what's in their interest and what they decide to do relative to India and anyone else," he said, in an interview taped in Baghdad at the end of a visit there.

We wouldn't accept this kind of talk for any other country - why Israel? This is ridiculous.

Bush/Chaney/Rice = Obama/Biden/Clinton when it comes to the Middle East. There has been and there won't be "Any Change" with the Obama administration.

that so many people in our government are scared to death that they will lose the "Jewish vote" if they say ANYTHING at all that is critical of Israel. (Most Jews I know are aware that Israel MUST make an accomodation with the Palestinians in granting these people their own sovereign state.) If we allow Israel to attack Iran it will result in WWIII. It would be SUICIDE for all of us.

Biden is a loose cannon. I hope that Obama stays clear of his irresponsible statements. This was absolutly the wrong time to make such a statement from a man in high office. Biden has been known to take pay-offs from Israel. Other-wise known as living in the same camp. As an American Tax Payer, I would cut off all aid to Israel if they made such an action as bombing Iran. They would be doing this with our given money and weapons... And as to their action in Gaza, we should be cutting off all aid now. Israel is becoming deplorable. The Bully of the Mid-East. God's chosen people... what a mis-statement.
And put Biden in a cage for the rest of his term. We do not need politicians as this.

Some flunky in G.H.W. Bush's State Department told Saddam Hussein that we, the US government, had no interest in whatever Saddam wanted to do to Yemen - and that set off the first Gulf War. Now Biden has told rogue Isreal (which illegally has over 200 nuclear bombs) the same thing in respect to Iran. IMHO: This is worse than anything Cheney ever did. Maybe G.W.Bush was right: we should all stock up on duct tape - and use it to cover Biden's big mouth.

The shitty ass behavior of Israel since they moved into the neighborhood is why they seem to get picked on so much. They have not been very good neighbors. They need to stop poking the snake with the stick. They only want to stir things up so that the war mongers in America have the excuse to go help them with the hornets nest. So it looks like Israel wants to be the control factor in the middle east. All that oil wealth for themselves? Starting something with Iran is just plane wrong. Enough with all the stupid, wasteful wars for profit and control.
