Why is Dianne Feinstein Really Poo-Pooing Obama's Public Option?

Posted by Byard Duncan at 4:27 AM on July 1, 2009.

The senator's health plan is structured the same way as Obama's public option. What's really stalling her?

After telling CNN on June 22 that she didn't think Barack Obama "has the votes right now" to pass a public option plan, Sen. Dianne Feinstein caught some pointed criticism from health care advocates.

Richard Kirsch, Health Care For America Now's national campaign manager, told Talking Points Memo that "Senator Feinstein should know better than anyone given the state of the economy in California that health care reform cannot wait." MoveOn.org reacted similarly, airing an advertisement that told Feinstein Californians "don't expect her to lead just on the easy issues."

Feinstein had a chance Sunday to answer these criticisms. "I do not think this is helpful," She told the Washington Post. "It doesn't move me one whit. [Democrats] are spending a lot of money on something that is not productive."

She could be right. After all, Feinstein, whose net worth falls somewhere between $52 million and $116 million and makes her the sixth highest paid senator in the United States, could teach us all a little something about thrift.

And speaking of thrift, let's not forget the $133,150 Feinstein accepted in campaign contributions from "health professionals" since 2005. Or the $75,250 she got from the "pharmaceutical/health product" industry during that time.

Still, what's perhaps most perplexing is the fact that the health care Feinstein and other senators receive under the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program is structured in a way that's remarkably similar to Obama's public plan. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, "federal employees, retirees and their survivors enjoy the widest selection of health plans in the country." They are able to choose from among "Consumer-Driven and High Deductible plans that offer catastrophic risk protection with higher deductibles, health savings/reimbursable accounts and lower premiums, or Fee-for-Service (FFS) plans, and their Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), or Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) if you live (or sometimes if you work) within the area serviced by the plan."

Look familiar?

Meanwhile, the 47 million Americans without health care -- along with the 85 percent who agree we need a radical change -- continue to bite their fingernails as Feinstein poo-poos a public option.

Let's hope they don't bite too hard, lest they require some absurdly expensive medical attention.

Digg!

Obama plans on taxing the middle class out of existence contrary to his promises during the campaign. Guess we can now call him "Lying lips" Obama with no more grace period.

Our leaders are out to make CEOs rich and get the big payoffs. What is transparent in our government under this administration is that they aren't transparent nor do they represent us.

I don't want Obama in office period. He will be a one term president but we go down with him.

She has played her gun control advocacy to the hilt while on just about every other issue she is pure 'blue dog' ...

California needs another Senator ...

Feinstein and Mrs. Jefferson.
It is time, however, for Obama to show some real leadership. If there was ever an issue to live or die by, it's healthcare reform.
Obama has the votes.

Senator/Congressperson, if the health care plan you enjoy is good for you, then what makes you think it would not be good for your constituents?

Is that the rationale for denying others what you yourself enjoy?

The situation concerning the "health care reform" is infuriating! Every person in this country knows that the only plan that is correct is the single payer plan (Medicare for all) that Dennis Kucinich proposed as HR 676 some time ago. If we only had more people like Dennis in COngress we could have had this in place years, nay decades ago for all members of Congress know well that this is the proper way to go. If only all of these members of Congress weren't whores to the insurance companies and the drug companies, like Diane Feinstein, who has just come out strongly against single payer.

Does it occur to these members of Congress that we, the people, are not all stupid any more. We are well aware of what is going on here and we're pissed as Hell! If we don't get single payer there will be a revolt in this country the likes of which they have never seen.

If these people who are supposed to be working for us don't understand that we are angry about this, we will take out our anger on them.

They don't understand that it's time for Congress to be afraid of us just like the government of France is afraid of the people there. We have learned through the internet the truth about what Congress does and doesn't do and we will put them out of office for their crimes, for they are criminals. We know all too well that thousands of people die very year from lack of health care. These people must bear responsibility for those deaths. Would they like it if we indicted them for these deaths for which they are responsible?

The kicker to this whole subject is the fact that Congress has the best health care that OUR money can buy. We should withdraw this until we get the same excellent care they have.

Listen up, Congress, your days are numbered in office unless you vote for single payer health care. This we promise!
