Late last week, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis issued a warning letter to department employees after office posters celebrating Gay Pride Month were defaced or removed. ThinkProgress obtained the Solis e-mail sent to the department’s entire staff. Solis, who helped found the House's Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Caucus, wrote she was "particularly pleased to have the opportunity to be the first Secretary in the department’s history to publicly recognize Pride Month":

“It appears, however, that some members of the Labor Department team have a different view, as it has come to my attention that most of the posters have been continually defaced or removed. On several occasions, even the poster frames have been torn completely off the elevator walls. [...]

I do not believe these actions represent the majority of our employees, so I refuse to let this situation define us. But I do want to make myself absolutely clear: Respect for others is non-negotiable at the U.S. Department of Labor.

Solis added the Gay Pride posters will be immediately replaced if they are damaged or removed. Full e-mail below:

From: Secretary Hilda Solis
Sent: Friday, June 26, 2009 1:40 PM
Subject: Proud of Pride

Dear Colleagues:

On June 1st, I initiated an elevator poster campaign in the Frances Perkins Building, with the goal of recognizing department initiatives and accomplishments, and to share my thoughts and priorities with the entire DOL team. We are currently exploring ways to provide the same information to BLS and to our regional offices.

Something else far more important also happened on June 1st. The President issued a proclamation recognizing June as national Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month. I was excited to have an opportunity, through our poster campaign, to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of the LGBT community and affirm our commitment to all workers across the country. The posters went up in the elevators on Monday.

As a founding member of the LGBT Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, I was particularly pleased to have the opportunity to be the first Secretary in the department’s history to publicly recognize Pride Month. I am very proud of that.

It appears, however, that some members of the Labor Department team have a different view, as it has come to my attention that most of the posters have been continually defaced or removed. On several occasions, even the poster frames have been torn completely off the elevator walls.

My reaction to this news has ranged from disappointment to outrage.

I do not believe these actions represent the majority of our employees, so I refuse to let this situation define us. But I do want to make myself absolutely clear: Respect for others is non-negotiable at the U.S. Department of Labor.

As the enforcer of fair and safe workplaces across the country, each and every one of us must be committed to working with all employers and employees, no matter their race, color, religion or sexual orientation. And as colleagues, each and every one of us must embrace, value, and celebrate the contributions of the entire Labor Department family.

The posters will stay up until the end of the month, and will be replaced immediately if they are removed or destroyed. This is a small way to remind everyone here how I, and most of our colleagues, feel about this issue.

We will continue to recognize and celebrate diversity at the U.S. Department of Labor, through the posters in the elevators, as well as education initiatives, special observances and events. I would very much like to hear your suggestions and thoughts on how we do this, as well as how we constructively address this specific issue at the department.

As always, I appreciate your efforts on behalf of working people across the country. And I wish each and every one of you a very happy Pride Month.

Hilda L. Solis

U.S. Secretary of Labor

Hilda Solis: The one gleaming diamond among the stinking pile of fascist dog crap that is the rest of the Obama administration.

(Impeach the Bush wanna-be!)

was the promise of immediate termination for those found to have removed or defaced these posters.

It's nice, though, to know there is finally a Department of Labor that is worth a shit, after the past eight year of ignoring violations of the labor laws and constantly siding with corporations.

Everyone at DoL to welcome the ramming of gay pride down their throats?

It's like if there were posters all over the place for christian pride week, if there's such a thing. I bet some of those would be defaced as well (probably by me, if I worked at DoL). Or how about this: Say I wanted to throw a party promoting straight sex, do you think the organization I work for would sponsor it? Hell no, of course not.

My point is this: The work place is no place to voice one's opinion or express their "pride" about anything, especially political or sexual orientation. It only breeds (no pun intended) animosity and a hostile workplace.

The DoL should never have sponsored such a thing.

You want to express your pride about being gay, straight, democrat, republican, christian, jewish or whatever? Fine, I 1000% support your human right to do so, but do it when you're not in the office, the rest of us do not want to hear about it. It's all about respect for others.

The DoL (like all orgs, government or private sector) cannot, by law, discriminate against one's sexual orientation when hiring or managing you. But it should never, ever seem to be promoting one over the other. I saw no mention of a "straight pride week", if there's such a thing...

The rest of us do not care if you're proud to be gay. Do gays care if I'm proud to be a straight male? Would they come to my side and support me? I didn't think so.

It's all about respect - if you respect me, I'll respect you, end of story.

Being gay and reality

Being gay or heterosexual is genetic--and both cross all boundaries of race, religion, political affiliation, nationality, ethnicity, etc. While pride in a particular group should remain in the confines of that particular group, being gay is different. But the US Government already recognizes and celebrates "Woman's Week [Federal Woman's Program: FWP, of which (I am a man as it is a recognition of equality under the law, as is NOW [National Organization FOR Women]) was the chair of the USGOVDODAAFES FWP)", "Handicap [Specially Challenged] Week," "American Indian Week," etc. -- all groups that go beyond a single interest. To deny Gay Pride is to cut off a segment of all sectors of society (Jewish, Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, Moslem, atheist, etc; as well as all races, ethnicities, etc.) and provides a platform for self actualization and the ending of marginalization. The Secretary of Labor has a definite and good point--ALL people are to be treated equally.

Some of the above messages/comments make it very clear why GLBT's need
to have support, especially from the Dept of Labor. The misunderstanding of Gay rights is evident in that the posters were vandalized. When someone has a chance to ride in an elevator, one also has the opportunity to think, to learn and to check one's conscience. If the issue of Gay Pride is so offensive to you, just think how difficult it must be to have to work with you. It is an opportunity for you to understand, it is not a threat! We're here, we're everywhere, we will not go away. We are no less human than a straight, if we were not so hated, discriminated against and misunderstood, you would not need to see the posters! It is your attitudes that demand we let it be known that we are gaining support because it is necessary that you are not allowed to sink our boat!

by radical christofascist activists during the Bush administration. It is hardly surprising that this sort of thing is going on.

As a nation we seem to be sliding into a corporatist/fascist state. Obama may be the last gasp of a dying breed of liberals. We can see that the fascists are winning the game even though Obama is making a few points every now and again.

Dig your car out of oozy mud? No sooner do you get the mud out of the way than it oozes right back to where it was.
So it is with bigoted nitwits. They'll ooze right back when you're not watching them. You can recognize them with their mouths agape, and listening to fatheads like lush limberger for orders on what to think and do.

Only work-related, OSHA required posters are allowed where I work.

I don't really CARE if my co-workers are gay or Muslim or African American or Hispanic or white or whatever as long as we can ALL GET ALONG and work together well!

DON'T ASK AND DON'T TELL PERTAINS TO A LOT MORE THAN JUST BEING GAY.
