Michael Savage Issues Fatwa Against Media Matters

Posted by Jason Linkins, Huffington Post at 6:00 AM on June 25, 2009.

Savage recently called on people "harassed by this Stalinist group, Media Matters" to publish the names and pictures of Media Matters staffers.

I'm having a hard time discerning the logic behind talk-radio host Michael Savage's recent threat to post pictures and "pertinent information" about the people who work for Media Matters For America on his website. Oh, wait! I see my mistake! I am sitting here, contemplating Michael Savage, and attempting to "discern logic." Okay, my bad.

The story goes like this: Michael Savage hates him some Media Matters folks, for constantly harping on his craziness, and probably because he blames the media watchdog organization for the way he was banned from entering Great Britain by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith. So, Savage recently called upon "all people in the media who have been harassed by this Stalinist group, Media Matters, to join forces to publish the names of the people and put their pictures up on their websites." Ahh, yes! Who can forget the robust growth of media watchdog groups that flourished under Stalin!

[LISTEN]

What's strange about this is that Media Matters has been making the case for some time now that right-wing voices have been ramping up rhetoric that specifically urges violent acts and intimidation. So now, Savage is talking about a running a web-stalking campaign against them? Hmmm. I wonder what sort of conclusions a person might draw from that?

Ron Moore, writing for the Washington Examiner, June 24, 2009:

The history of right wing extremists using "wanted" posters against abortion providers is well documented. Recently the right wing Christian group the American Center for Law and Justice celebrated its court victory for the "truth truck" that promoted incendiary attacks on Dr. George Tiller. Sadly two days later Tiller was dead, assassinated in his place of worship. While the court case and Tiller's murder cannot be directly linked it demonstrated a certain morbid insensitivity that the group continued to trumpet the court victory after Tiller's death.

[...]

Against this backdrop the threat to post pictures and personal information about media watchdogs as a response to criticism can legitimately be perceived as a threat. Michael Savage may be famous for brash talk and incendiary language, but recent history must be taken into account as his "Savage Nation" may take the talker's inflammatory posting as marching orders to take action against his enemies.

And against this backdrop, it seems to me that making Media Matters the target in the same way that they have been writing about, with earnest concern, only helps to prove their point. It just doesn't make logical sense for Michael Savage to do...oh, but there I go again!

'Dead or alive' too Savage Weiner?
There is no reason we should allow these incitors of violence to claim they were clueless that violence could be provoked by their words. We have had too many examples over the last few decades to prove there is precedence to rhetoric leading to violence.
Beyond that is the fact that because someone pays this asshole a salary- he is an employee of that Corp- Corps are not covered under Freedom of Speech. They are granted licensing to serve the Public, not spread propagnada or incite violence. These Corps are giving an Expressed Authority (contract) to these people to act as their Representatives- I have yet to hear a disclaimer before any of these soapbox shows stating 'The views and opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the Co, it's Mgt or sponsors'. Seems they do this to cover their asses when it's an Infomercial. Yet is that not exactly what these people like Savage,Limbaugh, Beck , O'Reilly are- snakeoil dealers for a ideological product. Their Facts are often Not Facts, their Claims constantly unsubstantiated by reality and their overall benefit to society obviously counterproductive, thus deterimental.
By giving these snakeoil dealers a Poduim, these Corps are also granting them an Implied Authority. So the average cicitzen assumes these people know their facts and are telling them the truth,Tehrefore they must be an Authority on the Subject, why else would they be given a national and international platform.
So should Glenn Beck be prosecuted for gettting those 3 cops killed because he claimed the Gov't was out to 'take your guns'- YES. But so should FOX News' who gave him the ways and means to propagate such lies and broadcasts his fearmongering rhetoric. NewsCorps should not only lose it's FCC licensing, but it's ability to call any of it's Print outlets "NEWSpapers", Including the WSJ which has now become nothing more than a Tabloid Rag and Propaganda outlet for the Neo Cons psychotic delusions.

... could this be taken as ANYTHING but a call to illegal activity, if not violence???

No fucking wonder he was banned from the UK. I wouldn't want him traveling to my country either, were I not an American.

The Savage (Wiener) is spewing his vomitus on MY airwaves, licensed in the public interest

Isn't it time to suspend some licenses - and maybe redefine terrorism?

Imagine if a Muslim or left wing group used the exact tactics Savage does.

Listen to his program folks! If you are a liberal (vermin) he is calling for your death nightly. He wants you rounded up and tossed into camps. He wants you in a straitjacket - at least.

Careful attention to the right weasel-wording does not change the fact of his calls to violence - and the deaths his words bring. And he does this every night on the airwaves owned by me and you and licensed to serve OUR interests! It is time to bring a permanent end to the Wiener demagoguery.

to do his "bidding." After all the stories here recently of the wing-nut lunatics who have murdered people, there should be no question as to what Mr. Weiner wants his listeners to do.

Of course, he won't have to do anything himself when he has an Army of Crazies, armed to the teeth, waiting for precise instructions as to who needs to be taken out.

The FBI needs to look into this. How many more innocent people need to be murdered before we put a stop to these lunatics blasting their own personal hit lists for everyone to see and possibly act upon?

He's taking his queues from the Fox playbook by showing their pictures on his website in the hope that some of his mentally deranged followers will assassinate the employees of Media Matters.
He thinks he's being clever
