NY Times Poll: Wide Support For Government-Administered Health Care

Congress needs a better feel for what the public wants, not just what their colleagues want.

Let's not lose sight of the multiple polls this past week reporting a similar finding:

Across a number of questions, the poll detected substantial support for a greater government role in health care, a position generally identified with the Democratic Party. When asked which party was more likely to improve health care, only 18 percent of respondents said the Republicans, compared with 57 percent who picked the Democrats. Even one of four Republicans said the Democrats would do better.

And specifically:

The national telephone survey, which was conducted from June 12 to 16, found that 72 percent of those questioned supported a government-administered insurance plan — something like Medicare for those under 65 — that would compete for customers with private insurers. Twenty percent said they were opposed.

Republicans in Congress have fiercely criticized the proposal as an unneeded expansion of government that might evolve into a system of nationalized health coverage and lead to the rationing of care.

But in the poll, the proposal received broad bipartisan backing, with half of those who call themselves Republicans saying they would support a public plan, along with nearly three-fourths of independents and almost nine in 10 Democrats.

And from Pew last week:

There continues to be widespread support for changing the health care system so that all Americans have insurance that covers all medically necessary care: 75% favor this currently, while 21% are opposed. However, the percentage favoring this proposal is down from 83% in April 1993. Similarly, while a large majority (61%) believes it is very important to limit annual increases in health care costs, fewer say that now than did so 16 years ago (69%).

When asked which is more important – to control annual cost increases or guarantee all Americans access to needed care – a majority (56%) says that it is more important to provide access to necessary medical care for all Americans while 36% say it is more important to control health care costs. In 1993, the public also opted for guaranteed access to care for all, but by a greater margin (74% to 20%).

Perhaps the most important change since 1993 is in the public’s assessment of how much change the current health care system needs. In April 1993, a majority (55%) said the system needed to be completely rebuilt, 26% said it needed fundamental changes, while 15% said it needed only minor changes. Today, fewer than half (41%) say the system needs to be completely rebuilt, while 30% say it requires fundamental change and 24% say the system works pretty well and needs only minor changes.

We noted at the time:

That matches what we see from NBC/WSJ, by the way, also at 75% support for "public option". Nearly three quarters (71) want either fundamental change (30), or a complete rebuild (41) if the system, so tweaks around the edges won't do it.

Nate Silver helps us out with a nice health care poll round-up over at fivethirtyeight.com (he didn't include CBS/NY Times, but has the other recent polls all in one place):

Nate gives his own ratings of each of the pollsters for wording, non-partisanship, sample size/selection and overall informativeness (and gives Kaiser high marks, not surprisingly. Their polling unit specializes in health questions and they have a great track record.) What I'd add to Nate's analysis is that the big media polls set narrative over at the networks and newspapers in ways the Kaiser poll does not.

In any case, Congress needs a better feel for what the public wants, not just what their colleagues want. They will get that when they go home in August for the recess.

The trick is to have a decent proposal on the table before then.

Digg!

Pres Obama has asked that we unite together on June 27th to push for healthcare reform, yet my fellow Lefties are refusing merely because Single payer is not the Sole purpose of the Event.
I am sick of the Far Left fucking up our progress towards some kind of healthcare reform merely because they're hell bent on ONLY Single payer. Don't get me wrong I am a Socialist and want a socialized system for healthcare- but it is suicidal to our efforts to take this 'Do or Die' position.
There are many on the Fringe left who are under the delusion that as soon as a single payer bill is signed a magic wand will convert US to the system- HR 676 Does not Say that!!
FYI to all those HR 676 supporters (which I am) the Bill specifically notes that the process will take about 10 YEARS to convert over- No magic wands, No Tooth fairies either!
The Instantaneous Single Payer program is dead because there NEVER was one!
Help those of US who want a Public Option to get the ball rolling towards a Single payer system. We are going to have to kill the For profit system through starvation of Customers!
With this unyeilding, unrealistic obsession with this non existent legislation, You 'single payer' Zealots are undermining our ability to make ANY PROGRESS forward. Is the Public Option a 'Trojan Horse' Absolutely if the american Public chooses to buy into the Public program instead of the for Profits!
The Far left fringe constantly cuts OUR noses off to spite Their faces.
You know why the Right always controls the debate- because you not only let them define it, you help write their talking points! HR 676 IS a PUBLIC OPTION!!
If we fail AGAIN to make progress towards a Public option I will not only be pointing my finger at the Corp Whores on the Right, but the undermining self aborbed,Self Righteous co conspirators from the Left!We finally are at a point we can take a step forward on this issue and the Far Left wants to Hold their breath and Stomp their feet, not only assuring failure of ANY Public Program, but any means towards it Universal healthcare in the future!
SOB!!!!
The Left has to Stop letting the Right Define the underlying issues and allowing them to derail real progress because of it.
We laugh at the Right for Being Spoon Fed their 'logic', yet fail to see how We on the Left open our own mouths to eat the shit their peddling.
You want to defeat the Right, you have to use their own tactics of redefining the issue.
Healthcare is the epitome of the most Fundemental right to "Life Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness".
The Free Market Table has Two sides which are Guaranteed to 'WE the People',thus We have the right to particpate as Providers/producers/suppliers/Seller in competition with the private industries.
We scoff at the rights Oxymoronic circular illogic but never bother to use it against them.
AIDS was always a Human disease, not just a Gay Disease as ACT UP helped to paint it.Not Just a Gay issue
DADT is the Code of Silence which allows UNFIT people to enlist or be retained- That means the White supremists, the End of Dayers wanting to fight in the "Holy War", the Rapist and thd Murders. Not just a Gay issue.
Partnerships (unions), not just 'marriage', are a legally binding contract between two people which are recognized by law and enforceable in a court of law.
The Left doesn't just Fall into the Trap devised by the Right- they walk head long into it.

They don't care one whit about what The People want.

The fact of the matter is, they will vote for those who fill their campaign coffers, namely insurance companies, for-profit hospitals, Big Pharma and the AMA. They are preparing to do the bidding of those who put them in Washington and those who keep them there. And don't think for one minute these lobbyists aren't threatening them with their worst fear -- withholding campaign funds.

These House and Senate members clearly keep their eyes on public opinion polls. They know how we feel. 72% of Americans want a public plan. That's a huge number. But they are willing to trade public interest for dollars in their campaign chests.

I have emailed and called by Congressman and both Senators every week for months. I will continue to do so. But this is an exercise in futility. They are not going to vote for ANY public plan. I'm uninsured, so this is a very important topic to me. I'm also a cancer survivor. If cancer returns, I will die. There is NO ONE who will be willing to treat me without insurance. NO ONE. It's a frightening prospect. But none of my elected politicians care about that.

So, all these Republics (and some Democrats) who say that we will get "rationed care" under a public plan... FUCK YOU. You can't get more "rationed" than nothing at all. Which is what I have now.

The CIA will be able to take money from any Government Healthcare System We Create

The CIA Act of 1949 specifically authorizes:
any other Government agency is authorized to transfer to or receive from the Agency such sums without regard to any provisions of law limiting or prohibiting transfers between appropriations

What this means is that the CIA can take money from HUD, Medicare, Social Security, etc and fund Special Access Programs with this money.

Creating a government funded health insurance system will give the CIA even more money to use to fund Special Access Programs without Congressional or Public knowledge.

If we absolutely must make the government any bigger lets at least close this CIA funding loophole first.

Health Care

How about if the left/progressive democrats all got together on the Internet on ONE SITE AND STARTED WORKING OUT WHAT WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE TO EVERYONE FOR HEALTH CARE??? I, for one, want single payer, but if that can't be, I do want a Public Option that Docs/hospitals won't be able to deny and that will be affordable to everyone. As I see it, if we did that, if the price was right, everyone would opt to buy into the public option and that would be the end of private health care...which is fine with me as well as with most other folks that I know. There also needs to be an opportunity for businesses to access the public option, either through a reasonable tax (which can't be avoided) or something along those lines. We need this and we need to make it happen.

Having the Health Care Industry offer up their pittance of assistance is ridiculous and would only last a heartbeat before they'd find a way to make us pay for what they were 'giving'.

So, could we make that happen? If so, how could we. As I see it, there are so many websites all of whom are saying things a slight bit different. Let's get on the same page and perhaps designate a date when folks can march on Washington.

We admire the Iranian people for what they are doing while America sits home and worries about what John and Kate plus 8 are doing. God, how screwed up are we anyway???
