Don't be misled, either by the occasion -- an address at the White House to fifth graders - or the charm of the person speaking. Michelle Obama has just launched a major campaign for healthy eating, a campaign that will rile deeply moneyed vested interests.

Great stuff. And considering the detailed content of the speech, those are mighty smart fifth graders!

isn't the White House garden progress?

Sometimes we are so mired in depression that we fail to realize the progress we human beings have made.

I have been examining the history of the Norman-English empire. Although it continues to have a baleful influence on us (the US has continued to be seen as one of its outposts) via the corporation (very much a monarchical instrument), I could not imagine it being involved with the excesses of the past: the mass slaughters of the Crusades, the evictions which caused the deaths of millions of Irish peasants, the starvation of millions in India, the concentration camps of the Boer War, the mass extermination of whole Palestinian villages from the air.

Yes, the powers that be have done and are continuing to do terrible things to the innocent people of Iraq and Afghanistan. We are right to protest at what is done in our name. But even if those protests are underreported or even misrepresented by the corporate media, they still have an impact.

Remember getting a gold star on your paper in school? Give yourself one today for caring about the welfare of others.

(Isn't it nice to have normal people in the White House?)

They keep trying to lie to the public about GMO and pesticide agriculture. They are saying locally grown organic agriculture causes obesity and starvation ha ha. They have no leg to stand on and public opinion has turned on them. GMO food is everywhere but that doesnt mean people like it!
