Nevada Republican Sen. John Ensign has admitted to an extramarital affair with a married staffer. Ensign, a staunch opponent of gay marriage and a 2012 Presidential hopeful, said "I deeply regret and am very sorry for my actions." In 1998, Ensign called on former President Bill Clinton to resign when details of Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky became public.

Politico reports that Ensign's admission and public apology come at the heels of a blackmail attempt by the campaign staffer's husband:

Political insiders in the Senate and in Nevada told POLITICO that Ensign began an affair with a staffer several months after he separated from his wife. When Ensign reconciled with his wife, the sources said, he gave the aide a severance package and parted ways.

Sometime later, a Nevada source said, Ensign met with the husband of the woman involved and had what this source described as a positive encounter. Sources said that the man subsequently asked Ensign for a substantial sum of money – at which point Ensign decided to make the affair public. In his Las Vegas press conference, Ensign declined to give specifics about the woman involved but did say she and “her husband were close friends and both of them worked for me.”

who cares, really? A man or woman's life must be their own. We are what we are and to demand some hypothetical morality is to demand the impossible.

Which, as we've noticed, makes the system break down.

this is becoming commonplace.

I wouldn't care one bit about Sen. Ensign having an affair with a staffer...

IF...

he hadn't taken to the Senate Floor as a staunch supporter of the Defense of Marriage Act.

From City Life Las Vegas blog...

"Ensign has repeatedly talked about his religion, including his affiliation with the Promise Keepers group. (Irony alert: He acknowledged joining the group, which aims to make men better husbands, at the suggestion of his wife, Darlene.)

Not only that, but Ensign has been sanctimonious about moral issues such as abortion and out-of-wedlock births, saying they should be “somewhat stigmatized.” And, it would be wrong of us not to point out that this affair is not exactly the first time the senator has lied about something.

And it’s not just that he had an affair; he had an affair with the wife of one of his own Senate staffers, a woman who also worked for his campaign committees."

Senators who live in glass houses...

media? Forget the family...their children. Have at it for cheap TV, newspaper news, etc.

Like Jon and Kate of 8. They don't care who they hurt.

Is anyone better off with this type of news?

Oh hum...let's not talk about the illegal wars, unemployment, bankers robbing us, take over of America by illegals, etc.

Has anyone been charged - much less convicted - of blackmail?

We know the Rethug sleazebag was lying to his wife. Maybe the alleged blackmail attempt actually happened and is anopen and shut case; maybe there is a tape. Maybe it is entirely made up. But all we know right now is that Ensign is a hypocritical, lying SOS - who betrayed his wife and that husband - who Ensign describes as a friend. He then screwed his subordinate - and his subordinate's wife

Whotta guy.

We know that his wife and the accused blackmailer were victims in the infidelity. We know that Ensign still claims them both as friends.

Oh yeah. We know that an unnamed "source" claimed that the husband "asked for a large amount of money." Irrefutable, huh?

It isn't possible, of course, that this fine upstanding Republican would just make shit up and get some flunky to whisper it in a reporter's ear. That never happens - right? Republicans don't shift blame and play the victim when they get caught in an act of betrayal, do they?

Well, my source says that the scumbag knows that he is about to be proven guilty in a major corruption case and is trying to discredit his chief accuser before the charges are filed.

Well, my source may have just made it all up too.

It is appalling that the article by "staff" (don't blame you for not wanting your name on this POS.) didn't at least qualify that single source accusation - or better still, wait for an actual fact to bite em in the ass. If you're gonna post rumors, call em that - but, please, never, never, never call yourself a "journalist." I like to think words still have meaning.

If nothing else, life among the most vocal and visible is surpisngly unspeakable and largely invisible. The mouths of the ick and loudest belie the sick and least proudest. If you are going ot be hyper-critical you would do well to be not hypocritical.

Here we go again. The Party of God, family values, and flag ownership suffering another black eye. The propagandists and their dupes are already squalling about having a list of Democrats with scandals in their backgrounds. I can't argue with history, but this weak rejoinder avoids the fact that the Plutocratic Party almost daily inundates the Nation with its devotion to Jesus and family values and its constant charges that the Democrats have none.

Perhaps Gingrich and Vitter can give him a few pointers on dealing with his situation.

This is a big deal because of the hypocrisy involved and that is it. No other reason.

I assume that this good Senator will promptly resign just like he was calling for Bill Clinton to do back in the day, right? It is the only way to be sure, Senator!

"Who cares?" "Not our business." "His poor family!"

BULLSHIT!

HYPOCRITE!

He said Bill Clinton should resign and had lost all credibility because he had had an extramarital affair. He voted for impeachment. He's one of the morality police for the Repugnicans.

HYPOCRITE!

Live by the same rules you impose on others or pay the price.

HYPOCRITE!

HE hurt his family by HIS actions. Nothing can be exposed if nothing is there.

HYPOCRITE!

He went public when the facts threatened his bank account, not because of some need to be truthful with his family, colleagues and constituents.

HYPOCRITE!

ENSIGN DEFENDS SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE ON SENATE FLOOR

Washington, D.C. – Senator John Ensign took to the floor of the United States Senate today to defend the sanctity of marriage and urge passage of the Federal Marriage Amendment Act.

“Marriage recognizes the ideal of a father and mother living together to raise their children,” Ensign said. “Marriage is the cornerstone on which our society was founded. For those who say that the Constitution is so sacred that we cannot or should not adopt the Federal Marriage Amendment, I would simply point out that marriage, and the sanctity of that institution, predates the American Constitution and the founding of our nation. Marriage, as a social institution, predates every other institution on which ordered society in America has relied.”

Ensign, in his comments, noted that Nevadans had amended the state constitution to guarantee the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman. Ensign emphasized the need to preserve the will of Nevadans who voted overwhelmingly to preserve marriage as well as the need to preserve the will of the majority of Americans.

“I am deeply concerned that a few unelected judges and some locally elected government officials have taken steps to redefine marriage to fit their own agenda,” said Ensign. “It is not right to mold marriage to fit the desires of a few, against the wishes of so many, and to ignore the important role of marriage.

And Larry Craig.

He's a hypocrite, and should resign himself. If he had one ounce of self-respect, that is.
