Right-Wing Violence Is Very Real and Very Dangerous

In light of the shootings at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in D.C. this afternoon, allegedly committed by white supremacist James Von Brunn, Matt Yglesias noted, "I hope that everyone who mau-maued the Department of Homeland Security for expressing concern about this kind of thing feel appropriately ashamed of themselves."

It's hardly an unreasonable point. Two months ago, Richard Poplawski, a right-wing extremist, allegedly gunned down three police officers in Pittsburgh, in part because he feared the non-existent "Obama gun ban." A few weeks ago, Scott Roeder, another right-wing extremist, allegedly assassinated Dr. George Tiller in Kansas. A few hours ago, Von Brunn, another right-wing extremist, allegedly opened fire at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

There are other recent examples that bear similar characteristics. This story out of Tennessee from last year continues to haunt:

Knoxville police Sunday evening searched the Levy Drive home of Jim David Adkisson after he allegedly entered the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church and killed two people and wounded six others during the presentation of a children's musical. [...]

Inside the house, officers found "Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder" by radio talk show host Michael Savage, "Let Freedom Ring" by talk show host Sean Hannity, and "The O'Reilly Factor," by television talk show host Bill O'Reilly.

The shotgun-wielding suspect in Sunday's mass shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church was motivated by a hatred of "the liberal movement," and he planned to shoot until police shot him, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling P. Owen IV said this morning.

Adkisson, 58, of Powell wrote a four-page letter in which he stated his "hatred of the liberal movement," Owen said. "Liberals in general, as well as gays."

Obviously, we're dealing with sick individuals here. There are key differences between violent right-wing radicals and mainstream Americans who happen to be conservative. Indeed, I'm not suggesting that conservative activists are necessarily dangerous, violent people.

I am suggesting that it makes sense of the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate and communicate with law enforcement agencies about potentially violent extremists -- of every ideological stripe -- to help prevent tragedies like the ones we've seen lately.

The DHS report specifically addressed the possibility of violence from anti-abortion radicals and anti-Semitic extremists. And in the last two weeks, Tiller was assassinated and a white supremacist opened fire at the Holocaust Memorial Museum.

The Republican hysteria over the DHS report -- which was, by the way, initiated by a Bush administration official -- was always based more on a partisan scheme than reality, but the incessant complaints look especially misguided today.

Digg!

owe Janet Napolitano an APOLOGY for trashing the Department of Homeland Security Report WARNING of this kind of extremist violence, and demanding her apology to the Republic Party.

Seems she was spot-on.

First, Roeder. Now this white supremacist asshole, von Brunn.

Every one of you regular troll posters who have used stories posted denouncing these violent acts, to support the views of these militant extremists need to be on notice:

We will not tolerate your hateful garbage any longer!

Your brand of hate are killing people and killing this country.

ENOUGH!

This how it all started in Germany in the 1930s. The Jews were to blame for everything. Germans were being victimized. The world was against them. It was time to take the country back from those who were determined to destroy it. Wave the flag. Stand up for what is right. Sound familiar? That is what the right wing fanatics are doing today - playing on the uneducated, ignorant, heavily armed and angry part of the population that feels victimized. It has to stop. We all need to tell those who spread the lies to shut up. The time to be quiet is over.

Several of these perpetrators knew they would be caught and/or killed.

I will be surprised if we DON'T have a domestically produced suicide bombing before the end of the year.

Martyrs, criminals, terrorists, or heroes - what is in a name?

Hate and violence - is it the American way?

Fox News spews the mis-truths, hate, and lies. The boy's club is O'Reilly, Hannity, and Beck. Videos are cropped & talking points contain very little factual information. There is now a dead doctor in Kansas, soldier in Arkansas, and security guard in Washington D.C. Fox News needs to pipe down. They've caused enough heart ache in the last few weeks. They're aware of this, for they couldn't get on air fast enough to blame President Obama for the shooting of the security guard. Giving that 6k word speech sent the shooter over board...NOT! What did happen with the speech is Lebanon voted into office a person willing and able to work with the USA. Hopefully the youth of Iran will do the same on Friday.

Watch the despicable Mr. Beck in action:

Kind of reminds you of other some other intellectually bankrupt propagandists we know, doesn't it?

9/11 truth is the vanguard for real change in America, and the 9/11 criminals are on the defensive and pushing back with ever more egregious lies.

If you analyze the government's story closely, you will find that not one element of their conspiracy theory is credibly supported by the facts.

We need a new investigation into the events of 9/11/01.

Physics, facts and logic prove that the government's conspiracy theory of 9/11 cannot be true.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

Americans are cringing under their beds again!!

because when Americans are preying on each other,
between opportunities to prey on everybody else,
Americans get scared,
tidily ensuring that a World of billions of non-Americans suffers for it.
so Americans can get back to preying on the World again without Americans standing up to say anything about it...

All I ask is that, because of this violence, right-wing White Christians get a little taste of what it has been like to be a Muslim or peace advocate here in the US since 9-11.
Tap their phones, examine their bank accounts, have investigators infiltrate their ranks, round them up and disappear them. (The latter was done to many Arab and Muslim men right after 9-11, you may recall, or you may have forgotten.)

Fair is fair. But I don't think I am going to hold my breath. After all, even after the Oklahoma City bombing, there wasn't a crack-down against White Christian right-wingers like there was a crackdown against Arabs and Muslims after 9-11.

A .45 with hollow points, as well as a taser. I know here in Florida the law used to be that if someone came after you, you had to try and run away. Now, if they come at you, and are weilding a weapon, you can stand your ground and shoot the bastard. That's what these doctors need to do; if American law enforcement won't take this seriously, then doctors should arm themselves. They should also wear a bullet-proof vest when entering and leaving their office.

The world is going to become very violent as hyper-inflation starts to set in, and the dollar continues to fall, or collapses completely, depending on how high they've cranked the FED's printing press, and the economy continues to crumble. If we had ANY sense, we would immediately begin dismantling our MIC, and work on creating a new monetary system, and bringing back our manufacturing base. Soon, the age of oil will end, and we will have to grow all of our own food, as there will be no fuel--or, if there is, it will be too expensive to use for shipping goods around the world. We will be in a lot of trouble, having no manufacturing base of our own--other than for weapons, of course. We could possibly save ourselves by drastic action, but this is what it would take. Obviously, most Americans are asleep, and in for a very rude awakening when they suddenly discover all their precious money is worthless. People don't understand: our dollar is not backed by gold-or anything else, and hasn't been for a long time. This is why it's so prone to inflation; and when the FED prints up massive amount of money out of all proportion to our GDP to bail out their fellow bankers who created this mess, it just causes the dollar to drop yet further in value, making it appear prices are skyrocketing, when it's really the purchasing power of the dollar being destroyed by our insane monetary policies.

Smart people are dumping their dollars and Treasury bonds. Get out of the dollar, and invest in the Euro or the Yen, or both, and in corporate stocks and gold, etc. if you want to survive this ordeal. What will at first be of even more value, in a complete collapse, will be food, water, shelter, weapons and ammo. This is not a far-off event; I don't know exactly when it will happen, but it's imminent. As the huge sums of freshly created Federal Reserve notes (dollars)enter circulation, they will cause the dollar to drop in value, as suddenly there will be a whole lot more money chasing the same amount of goods and services. The more one has of something--even 'money', when it's just un-backed paper--the less it's worth. The people who got these huge sums got it at full value, because it was uncirculated, newly created money. They are stealing the soon-to-be-devalued wealth of our dollar in this process. This is just another way in which money creation benefits an economic oligarchy while destroying the value of our money, and thus our savings. You could be a trillionaire, and be completely broke within a year the way things are going, if all your money is in dollars or Treasury bonds. Buy gold, which continues to rise, or trade out your dollars for Yen and Euros. There can be no "free market" as long as the FED exists, inflating these bubbles and our money supply for quick, massive gains for the inside bankers and their associates on Wall-Street, while destroying the savings of the American people and our very currency. By the way, Congress has no control over the FED; they don't even have the right to audit it. Also, no one knows exactly how much money it is creating since it stopped issuing its (M3) reports on how much money they were creating.

Why Aren't These Terrorists Being Treated like other Terrorists?
Posted by: ATH on Jun 11, 2009 7:58 AM

Imagine if Roeder, instead of having made a series of threats, attacks, acts of vandalism, etc. against a women's health clinic--or abortion clinic, if you prefer, although that is only one service they supplied--but against a Rabbi or a Synagogue, especially if Roeder was a follower of Islam! He would have never gotten beyond his initial threats, which alone would have gotten him a ticket to Gitmo probably!

I don't like abortion, either--especially late-stage abortions. I think there should be a limit based completely upon whether the developing foetus has the capacity to experience pain, which is dependent on a CNS. But these same extremists are also against proper sexual education and birth control, which is the way to go: prevention. The hard fact is that, at current population growth, before the end of this century, everyone--if the land were equally divided--would be resigned to a square meter of space. This means pop. growth MUST reach 0% growth. The world is already massively over-populated, and when oil runs out, billions will die from starvation and exposure. I think it's unethical to bring a child into this world right now! If you love children, adopt one of the many homeless and hopeless children in need of a parent. This would be "what Jesus would do." HE would also condemn, just as a secular humanist would, the act of killing a living human being in a misguided attempt to "save" what is not a child but a growth within a woman. I don't know much about late stage abortions; hopefully, the cut-off is before CNS development. If not, then I'm against it. But it's amazing to me that they don't see the absurdity of taking one life to supposedly "save another."

But the fact that these terrorists are not treated like other terrorists is very revealing as to what this "war on terrorism" is really about. Also, the radical "Zionist" Israelis who believe they have the "God-with-a-capital-G Given-Right" to steal the land of the Palestinians and keep them under a decades old, brutal military occuptation-why aren't they labelled for the terrorists they are? Instead, it's the oppressed Palestinians given this label. Their actions violate International Law, but the U.N.Security Council has been blocked from taking action by the U.S. Why do we treat Iraqis, who had nothing to do with 9/11, as these horrible terrorists deserving of torture, according to the beliefs of many (sick) Americans, yet these other terrorists and religious fanatics are treated in a completely different manner. More and more, what's left of our "Justice" system is becoming more and more politicized. Obama is covering up the murder by torture of over 100 detainees in U.S. custody, many of whom were innocent. In fact, most of the prisoners at G.B. are probably innocent, given what we now know about how they were rounded-up. Yet these crimes, for which we hanged judges, officials, and soldiers of other countries for committing these same acts against us or our allies, are not causing any legal problems for the Bush regime members who carried out these War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity. I suggest we all appeal to the U.N. and the International Court to step in and deliver Justice, since our current leaders are not upholding their duty to "faithfully execute the laws of this nation." Unless by execute you mean they are killing any semblance of equality of Justice or the rule of law. The president says, "No one is above the law," but his actions are usuallly in direct contrast to his promises, and instead Obama has proven that these people are indeed quite above the law, the same as others are crushed beneath it!

Where does the law stand on incitement to violence? Why is it against the law to shout "fire" in a crowded public place and yet those who shout hate to millions via the air waves, who are bloated with ego at their power to rile people up into violent action, are allowed to get away with it? They know what they're doing, and get off on it.

The federal government applies RICO laws so broadly that hardly anyone who meets with anyone could be charged under RICO. And yet the right-wing crazies continue their attacks, mostly with impunity. As long as some in government and in law enforcement (usually right-wing by definition) don't agree and refuse to uphold laws intended to protect those with whom they disagree, and as long as they get away with that, anarchy will threaten the nation. We have just gotten rid of a whole pack of anarchists for whom the rule of law was a joke, and now it's time to expect more. And better.

Too many people are buying into the "find someone to hate" campaign. The Republicans have lost their clout and the next best thing they can do is turn us all against each other. It's not enough to disagree, it's now necessary to be obnoxious and self righteous, and to identify with some cause "du jour". Words like: elitist, facist, white supremicist, anti-you name it, endless references to Nazis, etc. Too much time and space is devoted to FOX. Sometimes it seems like people watch the 'hairspray' channel and then come over to Alternet to rant and rave. More and more comments stray far away from the subject of the article and become meaningless. While everyone is scared to death of people half way around the world, we ought to pay attention to what's going on here. We are dividing ourselves into many small parts and will soon be powerless. We will no longer be able to defend ourselves against the Republicans who may be crazy, but they're not stupid. Thanks,ANNA

If terrorists exist, then these people are terrorists. However, since John Walker Lindh was found to be a Taliban fighter, we have seen the media reify sterotypes and join along in fear-mongering of certain groups.

The title "terrorist" is almost exclusively set aside for brown people and Muslims in the media. They even called Lindh by his birth name, so as to not disturb the racial sterotype of a Muslim as a brown person.

We live post-racial my arse

"I hope that everyone who mau-maued the Department of Homeland Security for expressing concern about this kind of thing feel appropriately ashamed of themselves."

The author quotes this bigoted clause with approval. We are to believe that the Kenyan Mau-Mau rebels represent "terrorists" and the British colonialists represent the Homeland Security good guys.

The author then cites various right-wing incitements, including Fox's O'Reilly.

The obvious truth behind this embarrassingly condescending article is that it is precisely O'Reilly and his clones whom "Homeland Security" under Bush protected, while resolving to lynch, torture or imprison without trial progressives and free-speech advocates, especially if they are dark-complexioned and appear remotely Muslim.

Nothing worse could have happened. Not even a comet. As a disciple of the disciplines of Sound Reason and Logic rarely seen in the years of the george, I wonder what to do now to plan a course of action for serious, or any event for that matter. These are my only means of navigating in a world where most fixed references from centuries past now dead. The clear and serious criminality in the government, churches, most notably the catholic and jewish religions, and the ridiculous ideological social control constructs foisted on the world cause me to wonder how long we can survive in such a trashed world. Overpopulated, squandered resources, unchecked population, to mention only a few of the critical catastrophes brought on largely by America in it's assumed position of omniscience. Curses such as religion of any flavor infecting the world with idiotic laws, rules and behavior worse than the slimiest criminals such as george bush. I didn't suspect i'd be living in times that could be the last for the Human race, but it most certainly is beginning to look that way.

"Why, punish people who commit violent acts, doofus!"

Now, we get into the obsession of some folks over not locking criminals up...

...and so the wheel of ridiculousness spins round and round.

P.S. Communicating a threat is a crime, and has some legal definitions. If YOU think YOU'VE been threatened with impending harm, for Pete's sake report it?

Doesn't mean that people who spew rancid hate and vitriol get a free pass, which is exactly what apologist jerk-offs like Prophit think is perfectly fine. Basically, we're just supposed to allow the racists free reign to say whatever they like and not respond.

The First Amendment is a double-edged sword, and yes it gives racists the right to be ignorant, but it also gives those who oppose them the EQUAL RIGHT to put them in their place. I have the right as an American citizen to verbally criticize ANYONE who thinks of me as inferior because of my race and/or my gender. I DO NOT have to sit there and take it. Defending myself or a group of people verbally--be it through the vote or through boycotts--is not taking someone's rights away. It is the free exercise of speech.

White supremacy is a fallacy and sub-human cretins like Von Brunn have realized it somewhere deep inside and they cannot deal with the reality. A black man sitting in the Oval Office is an offense to everything they were raised believing in so violence is their last resort. What these people fail to realize is that we minority groups have gotten a huge taste of freedom and we like it.

We Will Never Go Back to the days of Jim Crow so they may as well get over it. Learn to share power and access and compete with the rest of the world on an equal basis.

Right Wing Violence?

Hmmm. Does anyone give credit to the Left Wingers doing violence and killing people?

I mean, there's the Unibomber, Earth First, and PETA, just to start. Note that the FBI has labeled Earth First a terrorist organization.

This type of assault is terrible, but clamping a political label on it is just dancing in the blood of innocents, and it shows that you have no concern over those who have been killed, but are more excited about the opportunity to bash a political belief.

I think you have pegged the callousness meter.

I am thoroghly sick and tired of the wrap-themselves-up-in-the-First-Amendment knuckleheads who excuse racist and violent speech and behavior, all the while expecting those of us it affects to just sit and take it.

The First Amendment is NOT a bully pulpit. This is obviously something the right wing and their lefty enablers missed during Basic Constitution 101A. Yes, it protects hateful and ignorant speech, but it also allows for us to challege and confront such speech. Telling supremacists to go to hell, do not pass go or collect two-hundred dollars is not infringing upon their rights.

What really pisses me off is the liberal enablers in here who somehow keep demanding that minorities keep extending the olive branch and sing Kumbaya while citing Rodney King's "can't we all get along". With white supremacists, the answer is a resounding HELL NO! These are not YOUR communities or YOUR people being singled out for violence and racist speech.

Frankly, I'm done with being peaceful and passive. There has been nearly three-hundre years of trying to show that we are no different. This MY country too and if the white supremacist dickwads can't wrap their feeble-minded brains around that fact, too bad--go colonize the moon. The reign of white supremacy had its day and it FAILED as it was destined to. It was based upon false premises which have been exposed. Deal with it.

If James Von Brunn meets his well-deserved demise, I for one will breathe a lot easier. If he wanted to go out with a bang, the cops should have kept shooting until he looked like swiss cheese! They do that to blacks and latinos all the time and for far less cause.
