Ignorance: Michael Steele Says Obama Won the Presidency Because of His Race

Posted by Ali Frick, Think Progress at 10:40 AM on May 22, 2009.

Despite Steele's promise that the GOP will stop looking backward he revisits the 2008 election with some stunning language.

Apparently unable to learn from egregious mistakes from the recent past, RNC Chairman Michael Steele once again took to the radio airwaves today as a guest host for Bill Bennett. Earlier this week, Steele declared “an end to the era of Republicans looking backward.” This morning, however, Steele revisited the 2008 election to insist that President Obama had never been “vetted” because the press “fell in love with the black man”:

STEELE: The problem that we have with this president is that we don’t know [Obama]. He was not vetted, folks. … He was not vetted, because the press fell in love with the black man running for the office. “Oh gee, wouldn’t it be neat to do that? Gee, wouldn’t it make all of our liberal guilt just go away? We can continue to ride around in our limousines and feel so lucky to live in an America with a black president.” Okay that’s wonderful, great scenario, nice backdrop. But what does he stand for? What does he believe? … So we don’t know. We just don’t know.

Steele lamented the “missed opportunity” in “dissecting” Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s influence on Obama, and “the lessons [Obama] learned at his [Wright's] knee.” Listen to it:

That Steele would suggest Obama won the presidency because of his race is striking considering that Steele himself has had to face — and bat down — similar allegations. In 2006, when Steele ran for lieutenant governor in Maryland, a Baltimore Sun editorial said that he brought “little to the team but the color of his skin.” Steele slammed the implication as “pure ignorance”:

QUESTION: “Mr. Ehrlich’s running mate, state GOP chairman Michael Steele, brings little to the team but the color of his skin.” Baltimore Sun. … What was your reaction when you read that?

STEELE: Ignorant. It was just pure ignorance. It’s something I had to put up with countless times. … But it was, again, showing a high level of ignorance — ignorance and racism. And call it for what it is. The Baltimore Sun is the Baltimore Sun. I don’t deal with the newspaper. I have nothing to say to the editorial board or –- I barely speak to its reporters, because this is a newspaper that, in my view, has some issues it needs to work out with respect to race.

Earlier this month, also while hosting Bill Bennett’s show, Steele agreed with a caller who declared that Obama “is the Magic Negro.” “Yeah,” Steele replied, laughing. “You read that too, huh?”

Digg!

Why did the GOP give this man the job?

Oh yeah, because the GOP is in complete disarray, so this job is basically shit-shoveling. And Steele has the gall to say Obama got his job because he's black.

Don't suppose the Obama win had anything at all to do with the Bush Criminalocracy or with the combination of the doddering old fool and the clueless wolf-killer that the GOP decided to front in this election... nah, couldn't be.

I was listening to the car radio not paying alot of attention, but I heard a male voice say, "These baby boomers just have to get over themselves". I had no idea who he was but I remember thinking, I hope that guy is running for something so I can vote for him. We had a portion of the population that was obnoxious. That's was the first thing I ever heard Obama say. I had no idea what color he was. I kept on listening to him and found out. I grew up in very diverse surroundings and never gave it a thought. ANNA

Surely Michael Steele has noticed that the only reason he has this'job' is because of his skin colour! The Repugs have told him in just about every way possible that he is just the 'token Negro'.

Steele is way off in lala land if he really thinks the racist repugnants selected him for this job for any other reason.

He promised change and hope.
So far have NOT seen any change.
He instilled HOPE in us unemployed folks that things would get better and he would encourage small businesses to grow and be able to hier more people.
LOSING HOPE.
THE NEW BOSS,SAME AS THE OLD BOSS...
COLOR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT
RACE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT

Steele is a Puppett and his strings must be pulled and material written by sneering lips Cheney, doughboy Rove, and drugged out Limbaugh. Get a life and just STFU, your not even close to Charlie Mccarthy and that loveable Edgar Bergen!

Let me get this right. Here is a black party chairman who narrowly won his position and only because his opponent was a putz claiming that the nation's first black president only won because he's black? Is this guy insane? What makes him think he didn't win HIS position in large part because he is black?

What is his problem?

Holy shit this guy is a mess. Seriously what is his major malfunction? It's like he has no introspection. I'm sorry a sizeable amount of your party still hates/doesn't trust black people, which is why you aren't being given the same level of respect or power in your own party (as its fucking LEADER) that Obama was given in his.

Seriously Steele just stop.

He is a lame duck. As we speak there are plans to to see how the RNC can get rid of him without coming off as racist...ha ha.

After Limbaugh emasculated him he lost ALL credibility. When he kissed Limbot's butt, he lost all credibility as a man..especially a black man.
