Republicans Continue to Drag Out Their Pelosi/CIA Stunt

Wait, they're still talking about that?

Maybe it's just me, but when I saw another story about a new round of Republican attacks on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D), my first reaction was, "Wait, they're still talking about that?"

A member of the House Republican Conference will offer a resolution on the House floor Thursday calling for a bipartisan investigation into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's claim that the CIA misled her on the use of waterboarding, two Republican sources tell CNN.

"The speaker has had a full week now to either produce the evidence or retract and apologize, and she's done neither," a senior Republican aide told CNN. "There is no choice now. A bipartisan investigation is needed to get to the facts."

Just so we're clear, if a Democrat says, in reference to credible allegations of widespread Bush administration wrongdoing, "There is no choice now. A bipartisan investigation is needed to get to the facts," that Democrat is a bitter partisan, stuck in the past, anxious to undermine national security. If a Republican says the same thing about Pelosi, he/she is simply supporting accountability.

Of course, the resolution is just another stunt, which is an extension of the larger stunt. There's no way the Democratic House majority is going to support this resolution. Indeed, if the House were to launch a bipartisan investigation every time a lawmaker questioned the honesty of the CIA, Congress would never get anything done and a fair amount of the Republican caucus would quickly find itself at the center of a probe.

Indeed, just yesterday, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) agreed with the Ranking Intelligence Committee Member Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) about the CIA having misled the House.

In the meantime, John Kerry is backing up Pelosi; Arlen Specter thinks Pelosi is right; and Time magazine pulled together the available information and concluded the Pelosi is "probably right." Best of all, "New questions surfaced Wednesday about the accuracy of a CIA document meant to settle who in Congress knew about severe interrogation methods approved by the Bush administration."

And yet, tomorrow morning, there will be a whole new round of whining from House Republicans, and the media will find Newt Gingrich's concerns on the subject utterly fascinating.

Digg!

Torture was part of an unacknowledged Special Access Program

There is not documentation she can produce because she could not take notes on what was going on.

Torture was allowed to happen because unacknowledged Special Access Programs and the even more secretive waived unacknowledged Special Access Programs have little to NO congressional oversight.

Pelosi (and 7 other Congressmen I believe: 3 more Dems and 4 Repubs) were barely informed of these torture programs though they did receive some info and should be held accountable.

Let the side that owns the truth win. In this case, I firmly believe that in the big picture, it is not Dick Cheney's side, hence all the BS and spin. It is likely not Nancy Pelosi's side either. In which case she can suffer the consequences.

The Republicans are currently daring the Democrats to do something about torture. The smart thing to do politically is to let her go down for her more pardonable sins. But it's also the right thing to do. If, in the end, she could have done something about torture and chose to stand idly by so that she could collect her own rewards, then she is a coward who does not deserve her position. She is not the big issue here. But the Republicans don't think the Dems have the stones to step up to this. So far they're being proven right.

that they have reeled-in the media to further the lies and distortions!

Someone needs to remind the poor Republics that Pete Hoekstra, Republic Congressman from Michigan, and Darryl Issa, Republic Congressman from California, and House Minority Leader, John Boener are asking for INVESTIGATIONS INTO ALLEGATIONS THAT THE CIA LIED TO CONGRESS.

From Talking Points Memo:

Hoekstra: It's Wrong To Call CIA Liars -- Except When I Do It

By Zachary Roth - May 19, 2009, 5:34PM

We told you earlier this afternoon about how Rep. Pete Hoekstra, who has called Nancy Pelosi's claim that the CIA lied to her "outrageous," has himself initiated a probe into whether the agency misled lawmakers about a 2001 shooting incident in Peru that caused the death of an American citizen.

And it looks like Hoekstra's hypocrisy goes even further. Think Progress points out that Hoekstra last night went on Fox News, where he explained to Greta Van Susteren that it's fine to criticize the CIA's performance, but not to accuse it of lying:

HOEKSTRA: I think you do go back and you break it into two different issues. One is the performance, how well, they're doing their job. The second is whether they have misled or lied to Congress, two very, very different issues.

And yet, as Think Progress also notes, Hoekstra said last November in regard to the Peru incident, that the CIA "may have been lying or concealing part of the truth." And: "We cannot have an intelligence community that covers up what it does and then lies to Congress."

Although maybe there's an amendment to Hoekstra's rule that provides an exception if Peru is involved?

Hmmmm... guess it's okay if you're a Republic, but it's the end of a career if it's a Democrat. Funny how it works that way, huh?

Isn't this OUR issue?

I think I first read about Pelosi's briefing on Alternet, as an example of how soldout to the Bushies she was. Here's Jeremy Scahill on Democracy Now: " system where detainees were going to be systematically tortured. And, of course, Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats were briefed on this program, despite what they’re saying right now."

Clear enough? Who cares what the Rethugs are saying: this is OUR issue, and we need to hold Pelosi's feet to the fire over it. Her only excuse for saying nothing at the time is that it would have required some guts. (That is, it was all "classified.")

The Repugs are not only dealing in the realm of hypocrisy, they are tettering on claims of Unfettered powers for the CIA. Stating it is UnAmerican to question the activities of the CIA is elevating that agency to the heights of the KGB. FYI Repugs that Agency Works for US- and if we demand accountability they had better start accomodating our Demands.
I still want to know how those Dumb SOB's missed the 20 highjackers coming into the US, failed to forewarn the FBI when they started taking flying lessons. Give me a Break 'We had no idea they would highjack a plane' - how many decades have we had Highjackers- 3, 4???Then lets roll into the numerous Fuck up after that point- WMD's, Yellow Cakes, No Iraq/AQ connection, the leak of a Covert agent...
And talk about bumbling idiots how the hell did Anthrax get out of one of OUR Military Bases? How about a loaded Nuclear War head flying over the US? The military Can't even Keep OUR WMD's safely contained.
Incompentecy would explain One of these major screw ups- but when they have conveniently rolled one into another, that proves complicity.
How Dare the Repug party insinuate We have no right to demand accountability from these EMPLOYEES- yet continue to afford themselves such Rights. Who the Fuck do they Think they are and What fucking Country do they think they are in. You SOB's Work for US too!And We The People will Tell YOU, the Public Servants, Want we want investigated. There is no Agency, organization or Office beyond the Powers of the People. To suggest such a thing is TREASON!
Don't close Gitmo- we are going to need it to house the Traitors who have barred the People from their Democracy through Abuse of Power.
You are protecting the CIA from Whom...'We the People'? Easy Repugs you are very close to becoming a Defendant in a Revolutionary Court case. Don't be so deluded that you think using Pelosi will negate such an investigation- WE Dems are still pissed about taking Impeachment off the Table- in fact take Reid and Hoyer too for all we care. But those handful of Dems will pale incomparison to the number of Repugs in that Defense Well.

How dare she call the CIA a bunch of liars. Well, she did and I couldn't be happier. Now they want a FULL investigation, or do they? I think she opened the door to many investigations and it's time someone did. Pelosi is not alone in her story. Congress was not not informed in the formal sense. They're so bogged down in what and what isn't classified that they've lost track. There were tactics used that Bush was not even aware of. She's being punished for hinting at a Truth Commission about a week ago. This whole attack on Pelosi is going to blow up in their faces. ANNA
