Conservatives Party Like It's 1992: "The Government Is Giving All Your Money to Welfare Recipients!"

Posted by Tana Ganeva, AlterNet at 6:55 PM on May 8, 2009.

One of the GOP's favorite b.s. talking points — the specter of welfare recipients living large on the government’s dime — is making a comeback.

Uh oh! Looks like the government is sneakily spending your hard-earned cash to shower welfare moms with Cadillacs again!

One of the GOP’s all-time favorite talking points — the racist, classist (and non-existent in real life) specter of welfare recipients living large on the government’s dime — appears to be making a comeback, this time inspired by a Massachusetts car ownership program for welfare recipients.

A Fox Nation headline proclaims in outrage:  “What?? Free Wheels for Welfare Recipients!”

Clicking through to the actual article, or course, reveals that the program’s beneficiaries are hardly awash in luxury. And, despite the fact that the article itself is laughably biased — one brief quote by an advocate of the program, sandwiched between three quotes by Republicans bloviating about government waste — it’s pretty easy to figure out that the program is not exactly a harbinger of socialism.

The state does not pay for the cars, but rather “... the car’s insurance, inspection, excise tax, title, registration, repairs and a AAA membership.” (The cars are supplied by non-profits.) Applicants have to show that they are either employed, or are actively looking for work. In order to get the cars, they have to prove that it is impossible for them to reach work using public transportation. Only families with children are eligible. And on and on.

You may have already surmised much of this, because you’re not an idiot. The same cannot be said for Fox Nation readers.

The comments that follow the headline are as racist, classist, and generally fucked up as one would expect. I feel gross re-posting samples, but it’s probably important to do so in order to get a true sense of the chilling vitriol and idiocy on display.

Fumes soimanextremist? (if you have to ask ... ):

Wow! We sure do give these people motivation to get the arses off the public dole, don't we? Free or cheap: rent, electricity, food stamps, daycare, phone service, healthcare, paychecks...and now cars! Well I feel much better now that I know that DeShawn won't have to WALK down to the street corner to sell the crack and that Niquisha won't have to haul her 6 kids (all with no babies daddies) down to the FREE health clinic on the bus.

(Yes, believe your eyes. Despite the fact that neither the headline nor article mention race, the commenter felt the need to use stereotypically African-American names.)

Anonymous cleverly writes:

I'm one of these welfare recipients. I plan on selling my car for 3 pounds of crack.

Anonymous 2 says:

Gee, why don't we just pay them to sit home and eat bon bons! Oh, I forgot, we already tried that -- it's called Welfare.

(these are 3 of the first 6 comments. I didn't even have to dig to find the really screwed up crap).

Anyway, one of the more mystifying Republican strategies to regain relevance seems to be to trot out old, largely irrelevant scare tactics. Exhibit A, of course, is the Conservative outcry over the impending advent of socialism. And here now, is another oldie but goody: vilifying welfare recipients and spazzing out about our government’s all-consuming obsession with helping the poor.

Let’s see how well this tack works out for the GOP, as more and more Americans come to depend on government assistance to survive the econocopolypse.

Digg!

Only the Wing-Nuts could make up a story, and then post nasty comments about the lies as if they were true.

You know, I've thought for years and years that the Republics were clowns, were ripe for ridicule and jokes. But since they lost the election six months ago, they have morphed into something completely unbelievable. They have turned into caricatures of their already-ridiculous selves!

And Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert and all the late-night talk show hosts thought they would be out of good material! ha!

The Federal government is giving away huge sums of money to welfare recipients such as Goldman Sachs, AIG, Citibank and Bank of America.

Lawrence O'Donnell last night hosting the Ed Show put it perfectly...All you people screaming about 'socialism' Tell Granny and Gramps to send their Social Security checks back and refuse to use medicare if they get sick. Not to mention quit your jobs and begin HomeSchooling your kids. If you've already lost your job- return your unemployment check while you're at it.In fact don't even accpet that 80% coverage paid by your healthcare ocvers- pay the whole thing straight out of your own pocket- because you are using the idea that when people work as a collective, prices go down.By the way you'll also need to get the necessary gear to serve & protect your community, as volunteer police and firefighters, and fill potholes and repair roads/Bridges/ levies in your spare time. and for those 'loafers', find time to work to care fro them feed, cloth and shelter them or be available to bury their bodies, much like those 3rd world countries where 'self Reliance' is king too.
so all you Tax cutting zombies- what are you willing to give up of a Civilized society. should we institute 'Logans run'? or 'Soilent Green'?
If this is the Rights definition of a 'Christian nation' Satan must be having a victory party.

SAME PLAY DIFFERENT ACTORS

The numbers of people who need some form of help to get by grows by the day. So there's no comeback. It never left. Welfare roles were cut drastically and replaced by the grand opportunity to work at places like Walmart. Technically these people are employed but simultaneously receive government assistance with rent, food stamps and health care. All the low paying retailers are tax subsidized by us. So Welfare was simply rearranged but never eliminated. And it did get people off the streets and out of trouble. Sort of. Meantime the numbers of poor families increases and the delicate balance no longer holds. And so we need a new plan. Ideally we should be able to provide decent jobs for Americans but somehow that didn't work out. The only subsitute for welfare is a job. ANNA

but there is one thing about the program that struck me as fundamentally unfair: "Only families with children are eligible."

Why the hell would that be? What special virtue does parenthood confer? It seems like *not* having children is the responsible thing to do. There's no reason to deny the same benefits to people who choose not to have children.

Go after the REPUBLIKLAN party's campaign contributors and do something useful.

The KLANSERVATIVES in the REPUBLIKLAN Party appear a group of political terrorists. Let us just hope that no one like conservatives Timothy McVeigh, or the antiabortion anthrax killer surfaces again. Oh, Ted Bundy, the serial killer served as a state official for the GOPranos in Washington State.

Meanwhile do something useful and go after the people that fund the REPUBLIKLAN Party, namely their campaign contributors.

A call to action.

If you don't like a particular TV program, you call their sponsors and tell them you will boycott them until the program either goes off the air or changes to your liking. This works similar with
political parties, politicians and their sponsors (campaign contributors).

If you have a blog please post this on your blog. I want to get at least 100,000 people to sign these petitions, the first one which you can demand single payer health care and a fix to the Medicare prescription drug benefit.

Read and sign these legislative petitions please and get hundreds of people to sign them and they will automatically go to Republican minority leaders Sen. McConnell and Rep. Boehner right away once you sign the petition.

Petition for Single payer health care.

Petition for Employee Free Choice act.

Petition for $10/hour minimum wage.

Petition for Norm Coleman to concede senate race.

Petition for Women's freedom of choice act.

Oh and I created this parody t shirt about medicare part D that uses a familiar symbol.

See it here.

Welfare is non-existant

When my husband, who was the last person in our home who was employed, lost his job, I went to the local "welfare" office for some help. My unemployment was due to run out in a week. We were accepted for Food Stamps and medicaid, only if I do not get the Stimulas Bill's extension. For a household of 4 people, that is two children and two adults, we would be eligable for $230./month. But only if you work for them for 30 hours/week. How do you survive, never-the-less get "rich" on welfare?

The previous poster wrote that her family qualified for a whopping $230 per month? That's it? That's what republicans are screeching about? And she has to work for 30 hours per week to get that? Doing what? For whom?

That's less than $1.92 an hour. Wouldn't that be illegal under the minimum wage law?

It's a true statement. Those holding their hands out:

--Israel
--Wall Street
--Those demanding tax cuts
--Tim Geithner (he was GIVEN money to pay his delinquent taxes but pocketed the money instead!)
--Pentagon
--pork barrel enthusiasts

And it goes on. The poor folks scrambles for the crumbs, as usual.

Every little neocon whine

When do we get to stop tracking this extremist minority's reactions to every little bump with reality?

Granted, domestic terrorism is brewing quite openly in that sector; granted, they own the world's biggest megaphone to amplify their increasingly-tiny voice. But one-third of the stories in today's AlterNet Headlines Newsletter report the far right's bizarre processing of reality, and the percentage is much higher on Olbermann and Maddow. A case in point -- even here on AlterNet, we don't hear about our side's many demonstrations against the wide variety of persistent abuses, but who in America could escape learning all about the "teabaggers" in the most excruciating detail?

Let's face it, at this point, more Americans are smokers than are Republicans. Are we obliged to hear what smokers think of every little event? Let's start treating these poor right-wing crazies as the tiny minority they've become -- focusing in on them this way is a bad habit, dating back from when "reality was what [they said it was]", and just encourages them in their delusions of grandeur.

Gore Vidal pointed out a few years ago that the S&L bailout of the 1980s cost American taxpayers more than all the welfare that has ever been distributed in the USA— federal, state, and municipal-- since 1789. William K. Black pointed out that IndyMac and AIG, each, by themselves, cost the same as the entire S&L bailout. The present crisis, says Black, is 100 to 1000 times worse than the S&L crisis.

The lies are killing us.

What is it going to take to get people in the public eye to STOP LYING?!

I have been in this world for well over 1/2 century, and I have never in my life seen anything approaching the level of lying, from all quarters, that I have witnessed in the last ten years or so.

The smooth operation of any society – indeed, the operation of society at all – depends upon a certain level of trust, without which things can quickly descend into chaos. The absolute insane level of lying – some of which, by adults who should know better, being beneath even a 4th-grade level of attempted subterfuge – is damaging that trust, and threatens, if it continues, to destroy it altogether. Where does one turn when one cannot believe ANYTHING that ANYONE says? We are already suffering from information overload that makes getting reliable facts hard enough; but when even the "facts" cannot be trusted once they are finally picked out of the mountains of trash, where does that leave us?

Nowhere.

I, for one, am finding myself turning off to virtually all forms of political discourse, thanks to the lack of truthfulness from any quarter. When everyone feels that they have to shout and overstate and engage in character assassination and beat down the other guy with made up information, the logical response is to ignore ALL OF IT!

If this becomes the norm for much of the population – and I suspect it is on its way to being just that – we are sunk as a democracy; the informed populace required to keep a democracy humming will simply disappear altogether, and what will rush in to fill the vacuum will be what always has been: tyranny.

We can scream and cry and wring our hands all we want about this or that political outrage; but if we do not insist upon and practice honesty at the core of our relations, we have nothing. And we will end up with nothing.

End of sermon.

Before welfare reform for the poor, CORPORATE WELFARE WAS ALMOST DOUBLE THAT OF THE POOR! (20 Years Of Censored Press by Project Censored)
They are hypocrites in their 'pro-life' stance. Save the unborn... but to hell with those that are born & living in poverty. Let it be, what it will be... whether these 'living' children suffer illness & die or be killed by a 'drive-by' shooting because of where they can afford to live.

They SCREAM that helping the poor is JUST REWARDING LAZINESS & IMORRAL BEHAVIOR,
while they don't say anything about welfare for the WEALTHY INDIVIDUALS, CORPORATIONS that OUTSOURCE AMERICAN JOBS OR THE CRIMINAL WALL STREET EXECUTIVES! Or even that these same ones use tax havens to hide their wealth! But tell the IRS to audit those that receive 'Earned Income Credit' because we can't allow that kind of widespread fraud & cheating the government!

The Republicans are ALWAYS talking about RESPONSIBILITY & ACCOUNTABILITY... WHERE WERE THEY WHEN KING GEORGE the W & SATAN's RIGHT HAND MAN & gang were BREAKING laws every at every turn? Where were they when WALL STREET pulled the BIGGEST PONZI SCHEME the World has ever seen? How about the ALL the CEO Executive BONUSES AFTER they got the BAILOUT MONEY?
In November 2008 600 Wall St. bankers got $1.6 billion in bonuses!!!!! That was bailout money that is paid by the taxpayers! Talk about welfare!
If they are against any kind of Socialism they SHOULD REFUSE THEIR medical benefits, & pensions & Social Security when they retire!

As for Rush Limburger cheese HE GETS CORPORATE WELFARE! Ask him how much rent he pays for the airtime he uses for his radio show. His show is on PUBLIC RADIO/airwaves!

The Democrats aren't without guilt either! They are almost as bad! They on the other hand ARE putting the interests of American Citizens behind those of illegal immigrants, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, legal foreign workers, (138,000 come into the country each & every month on the H-1B Visa, even though about 13 million Citizens are out of work).

Most of our so-called elected representatives are PROSTITUTES / WHORES to Wall Street & Corporate America for their money. No offense to prostitutes as they ACTUALLY WORK HARD FOR THEIR MONEY!

Ugh. I hope Tana is getting paid decent money to go troll through the Right-Wing filth. I feel like I need a damned shower after wading through those links.

Recently my MIL listened-in on the family conversations at the Mother's Day hoohah. For years she's remained silent while Right-Wing Authoritarianism has infested the wealthier offspring amongst my In-Laws. She was so horrified by the disgusting vitriol against our family (lower income) and noted they had almost none of their facts straight to boot. Her conclusion: people want to be mean. It got her ire up and she has vowed to start giving out ole fashioned tongue lashings when she starts hearing the RWA crapola bein' shined. I'm just glad I'm a continent away. It's easiest to be the black sheep when distance is physical as well.

It's class warfare.... the owning class against us.
