Fans of Sarah Palin Now See Her as a 'Clownish, Vindictive Amateur'

Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 2:39 PM on April 22, 2009.

When bloggers who *like* Sarah Palin start describing her as such it's a pretty bad sign for her career.

Reihan Salam, a prominent conservative blogger and Republican strategist, has defended Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) quite a bit over the last several months. He's promoted her, made excuses for her shortcomings, and tried to convince any who'd listen that she's really not as awful as she might seem. Up until recently, Salam has argued valiantly that Palin is a credible national figure and a plausible presidential aspirant.

Now, however, Salam has reluctantly given up.

Palin's campaign antics can be forgiven. What can't be forgiven is the ham-handed way she's tried to build her national profile since she returned to Alaska. She's abandoned the bold right-left populism that won over Alaska voters -- and me -- in the first place in favor of an increasingly defensive and harsh partisanship. After making her name as a determined enemy of Alaska's corrupt Republican establishment, she recently called for Democratic Sen. Mark Begich to step down so the hilariously crooked Ted Stevens could get another crack at the seat. She loudly promised to leave federal stimulus money on the table before clawing that promise back with a whimper. One can't help but get the impression that Palin is a clownish, vindictive amateur.

Now, for example, Palin is raising hackles for naming colorful crackpot Wayne Anthony Ross to be Alaska's attorney general. It turns out that Palin may have consulted with Ross over a state senate appointment, a move that would have been against state law. As a general matter, state law is something you might want your AG to be on top of.

What I'm wondering is: Has Sarah Palin undergone some kind of secret lobotomy?

Notwithstanding the possibility of secret brain surgery on the governor, Salam is arguably understating the case. As we talked about last week, Palin's on-the-job performance since last year's presidential election has been a train-wreck. (It's apparently getting worse, too, with a new ethics complaint having been filed against her this week.)

What's curious about all of this is that Palin had a more obvious and productive route, which she's inexplicably chosen to ignore. As Chris Orr noted the other day, "Perhaps the most mystifying element of Palin's recent forays into nuttery is that, politically speaking, it would be difficult to come up with stupider way to position herself in the wake of her v.p. run. The base already loves her -- the diehard pro-lifers, the hands-off-mine individualists, the anti-elitist brigades, you name 'em. Where she has (deepening) trouble is with everyone else: moderates, socially liberal libertarians, DC-establishment types, and anyone who places a premium on basic competence."

And yet, Palin has chosen to become an even more rigid ideologue, annoying lawmakers (in both parties) and locking up the support of the GOP's far-right base that already supported her. Reform-minded Republicans like Salam, meanwhile, are left with the impression that the governor is "a clownish, vindictive amateur," after hoping against hope that she'd step up as a genuine Republican leader.

There's simply no logic to this strategy.

Digg!

So she forays into nuttery from whence she came. It's amazing how much time and energy the Republicans put into promoting Palin. I never understood why. The best thing that came out of it all was Tina Fey on SNL. Something to be grateful for. ANNA

She hasn't undergone a lobotomy... but the lobotomies her supporters must have had have started to wear off.

What amazes me most of all is how I saw both Palin and Bush in a similar light from the outset... yet it took so many sooo long to come to the same conclusion. I knew Bush was a failure of epic proportions from day one. I even told a friend from Malta at the time that his election meant that we would be in a war within two years and would end up with a huge deficit.

Yes, Palin is a clownish, vindictive amateur. She always has been.

I find it amusing that many of the Right-wingers who thought that Palin was God's gift to the GOP are now realizing that she is an idiot. This is the woman whom they wanted a heart-beat away from the Presidency! They LOVED her! She was "brilliant", "Godly" and "the new Ronald Reagan". My conservative friends thought she was great even as she proved herself to be clueless about nearly everything. But now, oh how the mighty have fallen! I'm lovin' this! Oh she will try to run in 2012 but the only support she will get will come from the hard-core nutjobs in the GOP
base. Bye-bye Sarah!

As with all putrid, malodorous things, sunshine and fresh air are the best remedies. To those who decried continued media attention to Palin after her return to Alaska, I offer this as an example. Had the American people known more about the true characters of Bush, Cheney et al., they would never have been elected.

I can find no other rational explanation. To repeat what has been said in prior comments, it was immediately clear that Bush and Palin were morons in search of a clue. Good grief, it must have taken me literally two seconds after they began to force air through their mouths to realize this!

The allegation that Rethug bloggers have been slow on the uptake is probably more a function of them discovering that they are adrift at sea without a paddle than any brilliant insight at this late date.

Anyone who could have bought into the Bush/Palin/insert-Rethug-politician-name-here lies for more than a brief pause is not worthy of consideration in the first place.

peace,
Paul

It got that way way appealing to those type. Why be surprised why one of the idots want to run the party. Take a real good look, she is the real face of the GOP" a little people, a silly people , petty barbarous and cruel".

While this Palin info has been obvious to anyone with a clue since September, when do you think Faux will begin their fair and balanced "grassroots" support for Palin in 2012? Greta can't stay away from Alaska, Hannity thinks she's intelligent, Beck sees her as a soulmate and when she loses, O'Reilly will blame NBC (& CNN to a lesser degree) for the liberal media bias.

That's what attracted people to her, their belief that she had principles and spoke directly from her heart. Up until now, it didn't matter that she was stupid, uninformed, misinformed and arrogant beyond comprehension. Quite honestly, I don't understand the sudden reversal of their assessment of her. It's as if they suddenly began paying attention, which is totally out of character. This awakened awareness would seem to indicate that they are evolving, and we know how they feel about evolution.

If more Republicans keep realizing how ignorant, foolish and vindictive Sarah Palin is, her chances of forcing herself on the GOP ticket in 2012 grow slimmer.

I was kinda looking forward to more SNL skits.

I find it amusing and refreshing that Demo's or Dumo's are so terrified of Sarah. You attack her, attack Fox news, lie about tea bag rallies, etc. Left wing media ratings have fallen through the floor, while fox and conservative news ratings has gone through the roof. Sarah is quoted in an India news media as being more popular abroad than ever. You poor ole demos are now shaking in you boots as you relize you have elected a madman. While Obama is destroying your party's hopes for a future, you feebly attempt your attacks but no one is listening!

What 'Prolifer' Supports postponing medical Attention??

When you purport to be an avid advocate for the 'sanctity of life' how can you excuse the refusal to seek immediate medical attention when you are about to give birth? When your water breaks while carrying a compromised child and you proceed to give a speech, then drive past a hospital, only to board a plane for a 6 hour flight (not mentioning a thing to the airline staff), then drive past more medical facilities towards BFE. No Fetal monitors, no Ultrasound to assure the health and safety of your unborn child- nope gotta get back to Wasilla..From Texas!!
Although I have serious questions as to whether this child is a true Down syndrome child (oxygen deprived?) She endangered that unborn childs life, an Act of disregard even a Pro Choicer finds abhorrent.

Sarah Palin walked into a bar carrying with her a kid's puzzle. She sat down at the table, put down her kid's puzzle, and ordered a beer. She then shouted "51 Days!
Only 51 Days!!
Yea, Only 51 Days!!!
Yea, Only 51 Days!!!!
Yea, Only 51 Days!!!!!
Yea, Only 51 Days!!!!!!" until the bartender could no longer handle wonder what she was talking about when she kept shouting "Yea, Only 51 Days" seeming so self-satisfied when right in the middle of her table was a kids puzzle. Sarah Palin said "Now that I have been on a losing ticket, I decided that I wanted a job with the winner, Barack Obama. After all, Barack Obama gave a job to his primary rival, Hillary Clinton, so I thought that he might be willing to give a job to one of his general election rivals as well. But when I asked him about it, he said that the only reason why he gave a job to his primary rival Hillary Clinton was that she is smart, and that he does not think that I am smart enough to work in his administration. So I decided to show him how smart I am. After all, I just solved this jigsaw puzzle, it took me only 51 days to do it, and the box said on it 4 to 7 years."

Less than a minute after Sarah Palin opened her mouth for the first time on the national stage, she gave away the fact that she was hopelessly in love with the sound of her own voice – and a shrill one at that.

This is a completely self-involved, pathologically narcissistic woman bereft of the capability of introspection. So, it was inevitable that she would finally be seen as the clownish bafoonette people are, at last, catching onto. What depresses me is that it took so many so long to "get it." Such is the power of the popular media to obscure while legitimizing the worthless by promoting the "authority of fame."

can get elected in Alaska makes me rethink my opinion of the residents of that state. Previously, I thought people there were mostly environmentally friendly folks looking for a life where they could get close to nature.(The natural beauty of this state is awe-inspiring.) Now most of them look like the same militia/religious/gun-obsessed wingnut types that inhabit the backwoods of the rural South and such states as Idaho and Utah.

We need to save Alaska from these kooks. They'll destroy the place.

She doesn't think she NEEDS Alaskans any longer. She's done with all that. She's already seeing herself as President. And she's too stupid to realize that she hasn't got a CHANCE. Can you imagine a Presidential Candidate who refuses to talk to the press? First they will dismiss and ERASE her from the national spotlight. Then they will report EVERY dumb, ridiculous, thing she says or does. She's TOAST! But won't it be FUN to watch her come UNDONE? I feel sorry for the kids, though. She'll be a shrew!
