Republican Lawmaker to Asian-Americans: I'm Not Gonna Learn Chinese, So Can't You Change Your Funny Names?

Posted by Tana Ganeva, AlterNet at 12:44 PM on April 9, 2009.

During a hearing on voter ID legislation, Texas Republican Betty Brown said Americans of Asian descent should "simplify" their names.

On Tuesday, the Texas legislature heard arguments on voter ID legislation that would require photo ID — or two non-photo IDs — at the polls. An obvious necessity, of course, since everyone in the U.S. loves voting so much that there are scores of people clamoring to do it illegally. (In fact, there is no evidence of voter ID fraud in Texas).

Democratic lawmakers and several voting experts brought up the good — and oft-repeated — points that a) voter ID laws are a fake solution to a non-existent problem, and b) they disenfranchise poor, minority voters. (You know, the ones that tend to NOT vote Republican.)

Republicans, in turn, kept pushing the möbius strip argument that while there is a) no evidence of voter fraud b)voter fraud is a serious problem that needs to be addressed.

Then, Rep. Betty Brown from Terrell, Texas turned the Republican position from absurd and subtly racist to really absurd and overtly racist. Following a presentation on the voting difficulties faced by Americans of Asian descent, whose legal names don’t always match their everyday names, Brown said the following:

Rather than everyone here having to learn Chinese — I understand it’s a rather difficult language — do you think that it would behoove you and your citizens to adopt a name that we could deal with more readily here?

Can’t you see that this is something that would make it a lot easier for you and the people who are poll workers if you could adopt a name just for identification purposes that’s easier for Americans to deal with?

Yep. That’s what she said. You know what's fun? Thinking of Brown's statement as one of those "What's Wrong With This Picture" puzzles. I have this so far: 1) "learn Chinese" -- actually, at issue are Americans of Asian -- not just Chinese -- descent 2) "you and your citizens" -- in fact, the people under discussion are American citizens 3) The assumption that descendants of immigrants should accommodate the ignorance of some Americans by changing their names!

Asked to issue an apology by Democrats excited that Republicans are doing their work for them, Brown responded by ... saying something else that was racially insensitive. A spokesperson for the Rep. grumbled that Democrats are making too big a deal of the issue and the Rep. was merely trying to resolve an ID problem. “They want this to just be about race,” the flack said, according to the Houston Chronicle.

If you don't believe that this actually happened (and who can blame you) here's a video of the  incident:

The Asians will change their names if Rep. Brown undergoes a brain transplant. Deal?

BETTY BROWN has a funny name -- as in, I stepped in that betty brown that the dog left on my lawn.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Chinese is by far the most widely spoken language in the world--well over a billion people have no problem learning it. Surely, a handful of election officials can do as well (even in Texas).

Or they could just pass a law to dumb their photo IDs down to Rep. Brown's level. Forcing everyone to change their names to one she can recognize and approve, like Ronald Reagan, should do it. For the purpose of authenticity, the law should require changing appearances to match. We shouldn't encourage voters to confuse the poll workers by looking too Chinese, after all.

Yes, they should change their names. When in Texas, do as the Texans do. Bubba, Tammy Faye, Billy Bob...or they could name them after heroes of the right...Rush, George W, Anne Coulter. And while we're at it, why don't all those Hispanics change theirs too! And change their party affiliation to the big R! And convert to Southern Baptism! Yee-haw! Or does that sound too Chinese?

but as all you Alternet posters should be aware, every state has its share of ignorant and often, belligerent people. How about that Michele Bachmann? from what I know of voting in Texas (the only state I've ever voted in), the worst instances of voter fraud have involved dead people voting. it doesn't require picture ID to determine whether or not one is a zombie, so far as I know. wait a minute... we did have a couple of brain-dead presidents within the last 2 decades....

Southerners can sound ignorant, not just because of what they say, but how they say it. I find it difficult to understand. Could y'all please lose the accent so that we can understand y'all better? That silly drawl gets really annoying sometimes. Besides, if you pronounce words like a non-southerner, you will sound less stupid, even when you say stupid things.

After this does anyone wonder why the GOP has a problem attracting minority voters? Not only is the Texas GOP dishonest in their motives; they've been stealing elections with Rovian tactics and illegally redistricting to dilute minority voting strength for years. They've no strategies of substance left and can only resort to dirty tricks to try and maintain power - Well, good news, Hispanics will be in the majority in Texas within a few years - and then we might see some sanity in Texas - or we may want to give it back - It's been nothing but a pain and stain since 1848.

Part of the Problem

The irony here is that part of this (imaginary) problem comes from Asian Americans doing exactly what Betty Brown suggested. It is common in certain communities to have a "Western" name that is used in daily life and is different from their original (legal) name.

What if, rather than legally adopting their "Western" names, everyone started using their "difficult Chinese" legal names in daily life?

And while we're at it, somebody get Betty Brown a Chinese-English dictionary. I heard it's a difficult language to learn, so she'd better start soon.

This is nothing more that typical Republikkkan party racism. Before it was directed at Black people, this is directed at Asians. It will be interesting to watch how the Rethugs and their Religious Rightists squirm as they watch Hispanics take over and totally dominate that state. It will be delicious to watch Betty Brown and all of the other Browns squirm as the brown people turn the entire state a browner shade of brown.

PLAY THE VIDEO!!

Answer me~~exactly WHERE in it did she say "SIMPLIFY YOUR NAMES"??

I listened TWICE and NEVER heqard her say anything which could honestly be construed as being insulting.
It was a reasonable exchange between her and that young man.
I see her as attempting to be legitimately helpful.

Those who see it as insulting WNAT TO SEE IT THAT WAY.

Betty Brown is the latest GOP embarrassment and the sort of female who gives a bad name to the amendment bringing women into the US political process! Nothing new for Texas, though. By now, everyone probably knows that Texas, for at least 60 years, has had the most CLOWNISH and embarrassing legislature in the 50 states. Back about 1967 their elected representatives engaged in a free-for-all black-eye & bloody nose fistfight and wrasslin' match during a legislative session and the Texas Legislature was awarded LOOK Magazine's yearly booby prize for shameful public conduct. (Wouldn't you love to see old Betty with her clothes torn and lacquered hair disarrayed after a fistfight?)

See the video for her patronizing speech to a vastly more intelligent and well-educated American--a video furnished by none other than Anne Coulter, who undoubtedly believes Betty Brown sitteth at the right hand of God.

You gotta hear dumb Betty speak! The handsome young man she's addressing is an AMERICAN-born citizen--not a naturalized immigrant--but he's always "you", not "us". It's "your people" vs. "our people". In summary, she actually seemed to think that this man was Chinese, not American. The contrast, made over and over, is what can "we" do for "you"--as if she and this good-looking young man weren't citizens of the same nation and political system. But remember: out of Betty's big mouth, the phrase "for you" really means "TO you". (As in "deprive you filthy immigrants of the vote.")

The best part was when she asked this American about voting in China--not expecting his quick and funny reply which drew appreciative laughter! She got a bit flustered from that laughter, which she must have realized was giggling at her stupidity.

Brown is the sort of Texan who forces the rest of us (including decent Texans, I'm sure) to retaliate with nasty things about Texas. I'm an ex-Texan. I lived there for some time. Couldn't stand the climate but I liked my neighbors and fellow church members, so I know that a lot of Texans don't deserve to be insulted, especially those who reside in Austin. The Betty Browns are more likely to be ignoramuses from small cities or towns in the boonies. Great-granddaughters of "Babbitts" in Confederate uniform. She's from Athens, Texas--and what an insult to Greece that name is!

The deep fear of people like Betty Brown is that competition might show up their ignorance. It's based on the fact that East Asian, South Asian, and West Indian immigrants to the US (and Britain) have for years achieved higher-level college degrees, with better grades, than whites do. That's purty scary, ain't it, Betty Brown and Anne Coulter?

... only addressing their silly problems with spelling discrepancies with Asian cultures? If so I have to assume that their poor belabored poll workers are fluent in Original spellings and pronunciations of those of Russian, Greek and Arabic descent (to name just a couple) whose language is written in a script (even right to left in some cases)that has to be transliterated into a Roman (American) form. Sorry, Miss Brown. I didn't mean to gum up the works for your anti-"Chinese" crusade.

and several others at the Texas Lege. I worked there and was constantly amazed at what I would overhear from those elected to the state Legislature.

BUT... I can also attest to the fact that these idiots are NOT representative of ALL Texans. Not by a long shot. Don't forget that Texas also gave us Ann Richards, Molly Ivins, Jim Hightower, Henry B. Gonzales, and Willie Nelson!

Did I mention that these idiots are Republics? Not unlike Michelle Bachmann. Not unlike Jim Inhoffe. Not unlike Eric Canter. Not unlike any other completely moronic Republic in any other state in these United States.

This isn't a Texas problem as much as it is a Republic Party problem.

My son married a Japanese citizen. While she speaks perfect English (even has two degrees from American universities), her relatives never travel outside Japan and speak no language other than Japanese.

My son is learning Japanese for no other reason than to talk to his in-laws on his and his wife's annual vacation visiting her family. I guess Betty would insist that this is most inconsiderate of his in-laws, who should simply learn English.

Some lists.

A list of the top Chinese surnames:

Li
Wang
Chang
Liu
Chen
Yang
Wang
Chao
Chou
Su
Sun
Chu
Ma
Hu
Kuo

About half of the Korean population carry the surnames Kim, Lee and Park.

It's those Japanese who are really out to trip us up. A mitigating factor--one of these names is a household word in this country. Their top surnames:

Satou
Suzuki
Takahashi
Tanaka
Watanabe
Itou
Nakamura
Kobayashi
Saitou.

The Vietnamese are also a little annoying, but if you can learn these ten surnames, you've covered 80% of the Vietnamese population:

Nguyen
Tran
Le
Pham
Hoang
Vo
Jang
Bui
Ho
Ngo

My apologies to other Asian-Americans reading this, for leaving you out. On the other hand, when Betty says that "Chinese" names are too difficult, I'm sure she means you.

...but the writer and many of the posters are. I live in Japan, where if you want to vote, you'll have to adopt a Japanese name. Nobody seems to consider the opportunities available to immigrants to the USA. Nobody seemed to catch the irony of the young man saying "Well, there aren't many elections in China." He also said that many Asian-Americans ALREADY use Americanized names. It's as though the writers and most of the posters are operating from their own prejudice that blinds them to the very benign nature of the video exchange. The posters and writers are simply more racist than Rep. Brown. They are slaves to dogma.
