The Associated Press reports:

A gunman wearing a bulletproof vest and "lying in wait" opened fire on officers responding to a domestic disturbance call Saturday, killing three of them and turning a quiet Pittsburgh street into a battlefield, police said.

Police Chief Nate Harper said the motive for the shooting isn't clear, but friends said the gunman recently had been upset about losing his job and feared the Obama administration was poised to ban guns.

Richard Poplawski, 23, met officers at the doorway and shot two of them in the head immediately, Harper said. An officer who tried to help the two also was killed.

Poplawski, armed with an assault rifle and two other guns, then held police at bay for four hours as the fallen officers were left bleeding nearby, their colleagues unable to reach them, according to police and witnesses. More than 100 rounds were fired by the SWAT teams and Poplawski, Harper said.

[...]

Poplawski feared "the Obama gun ban that's on the way" and "didn't like our rights being infringed upon," said Edward Perkovic, his best friend.

Perkovic, 22, said he got a call at work from him in which he said, "Eddie, I am going to die today. ... Tell your family I love them and I love you."

Perkovic said: "I heard gunshots and he hung up. ... He sounded like he was in pain, like he got shot."

Poplawski had once tried to join the Marines, but was kicked out of boot camp after throwing a food tray at a drill sergeant, Perkovic said.

Another longtime friend, Aaron Vire, said Poplawski feared that President Barack Obama was going to take away his rights, though he said he "wasn't violently against Obama."

Obama has said he respects Americans' constitutional right to bear arms, but that he favors "common sense" gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he would approve of curbs on ownership of assault and concealed weapons.

take metal off the streets... the real problem is how people are being left with nothing to loose so life becomes suicide by cop...

any article can be weaponized, gun control will not quiet the rage felt in a person's mind...

obviously this guy had psych problems before he donned his bullet proof vest...

how do you outlaw rage and futility???

we had a similar case here in the Dayton area this past week and not a peep on it besides local news... sad so many are being pushed to the edge of isolation and normlessness, this is a social epidemic, not a hardware epidemic...

dread saying this, but think this is just the beginning... unemployment, label as a worker squashed, becoming labeled 'unemployed', embarrassment, isolation, futility, rage... suicide by cop...

The economy and shame at failure will drive many vulnerable people over the edge in various ways. Statistically speaking, some portion of those ways will be violent, and the shooting spree and family annihilation methods are popular options in the U.S.

propagating the ridiculous LIE that Obama wants to take everyone's guns.

I agree with the two posts above, that people are becoming more and more hopeless. Losing jobs, losing homes, losing families, losing health care and the ability to take care of basic needs. It's heartbreaking.

But right-wing talk radio lights a match to these people's despair. They foment this kind of behavior. They have to bear some responsibility in a case like this. (Unlike the Binghamton case.)

But the one word that describes the many incidents that have happened over the past month is... tragic. Tragic.

What are we becoming?

Obama may have done dumb things but gun control isn't one of them.

Some people invent silly fears of Obama being a gun grabber. He may be a dupe on the economy and foreign policy but I seriously doubt he has the time or money to throw at gun control. That gunman does nothing but give law abiding gun owners a bad rap. Besides, I thought the Democratic Party already dropped gun control for the most part. Last year, it wasn't even an issue unlike previous elections. To predict that Obama will be a gun grabber is like predicting that Cheney would bring peace to the Middle East.

Mass shootings have now common institutionalized events in American culture...The NRA has prevailed...The Democratic Party and "liberals" have capitulated common sense gun control for fear of offending white male hunters....The solution to gun violence is now MORE guns....this is now our national ideology.

- Even among the most radical leftists in this nation, there is a consensus that gun ownership should remain legal

- The NRA is first and foremost a trade organization of gun manufacturers...and profits can be increased by scaring people into thinking that their guns are going to be taken away. Secondly, the NRA is a political arm of the GOP that uses the threat of widespread gun confiscation to scare middle and low income voters into voting against their own economic interests...yet another bogus "wedge" issue.

- The NRA successfully frames even common sense gun control (i.e. stopping unlimited machine gun sales at gun shows) as Nazi like attempts to confiscate guns

- The NRA exploits tragedies like WACO to again scare people into believing that the government wants their guns.

---or do other people wonder why the average citizen can easily buy an assault rifle that can shoot 30 rounds per clip? I have no problem with people buying shotguns or revolvers but why can they buy stuff meant for armies? And another thing, why can the average citizen buy a bullet proof vest? You get these nutjobs that have a zillion rounds of ammo, an assault rifle, body armor and a grievance. Then they feel they have to kill a bunch of people to make a point.
I also put some of the blame on right-wing talkers who get nutjobs like this all stirred up. Hello Glen Beck and Sean Hannity, are you listening?

I'm not worried about a 6ft dialysis patient in some far off cave (which he's not)..I'm worried about the Whacked out neighbor down the Street, or the guy behind me at McDonalds, or on my way into the Docs office, or visiting Granny, or an athletic Event orcommunity center, or CHURCH!
I wasn't terrorized by the attacks on the Miltiary industrial Complex (WTC- $$,Pentagon- Might, DC- foreign policy).Hell if they wanted to Terrorize Americans they would have hit places we visit daily or on vacation, at least our Symbols of Freedom- Statue of Liberty. They were Never after US.
But it seems the 'soft targets'are the ones which American Terrorist regularly choose. Hell Ya can't even Trust your own spouse or parents not to kill you.
I suggest the NRA sit down and shut the fuck up- they are aiding in the psychosis, along with the Neo Cons and their extremeist Religious fanatics.Want to have American Come down hard on all of you- keep up the Acts which prove it to be necessary- providing evidence of a Clear & Present Danger.
We Protest for Equal Rights and Personal Choice and We are called UnAmerican and Immoral. Yet they Kill innocent people and call themselves 'patriots' and 'Faithfuls'..Take a look in the Damn mirror- your ideology is some seriously Twisted shit!!

I think all of us with concepts of rational gun policies should take the step of joining the NRA- by the millions! Then when the platform needs to be established, we all vote for banning assault weapons, and tighter screening on gun sales, or whatever sane and thoughtful concepts we could come up with. Blow Mr. Lapierre and friends right out of the pool. If you can't beat 'em, skunk 'em.
