Update: The AP has confirmed that Levi Johnston and Bristol Palin have broken up:

The engagement is off for the teenage daughter of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and the father of her baby. Levi Johnston told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he and Bristol Palin mutually decided "a while ago" to end their relationship. The 19-year-old Johnston declined to elaborate.

Eighteen-year-old Bristol Palin says in a statement to the AP that she is "devastated."

The two are the parents of a boy named Tripp, who was born Dec. 27.

Sarah Palin revealed her daughter's pregnancy days after being named John McCain's running mate on the Republican presidential ticket.

In an interview that aired on Fox News last month, Bristol Palin said her fiance saw the baby every day and described him as a "hands-on" dad.

The two had said they were considering a summer wedding.

Original post:

Gov. Sarah Palin's office on Wednesday refused to comment on a report that Palin's daughter Bristol Palin had broken off her engagement with fiancé Levi Johnston.

According to Star magazine, 18-year-old Bristol Palin and Johnston are no longer together:

Now's Levi's sister, Mercede is telling all exclusively to Star and the picture she paints of life in Wasilla, Alaska is not a pretty one. Bristol, 18, has virtually cut Levi out of the life of their two-month-old son Tripp.

"Levi tries to visit Tripp every single day, but Bristol makes it nearly impossible. She tells him he can't take the baby to our house because she doesn't want him around 'white trash'!" Bristol won't even allow him to watch the baby for a few hours -- unless he's babysitting!

Mercede also told Star: "Bristol's just crazy. That's the nicest way I can put it. She and Levi actually broke up a while ago!"

"That's not state business," Abbey Bulawa, an aide to Gov. Palin, told the Huffington Post. "We don't comment on the governor's children."

In an interview last month with FOX's Greta Van Susteren, Bristol said Levi is "a hands-on dad" who sees his son every day. She also said they planned to get married once they were done with school.

Palin's son Tripp was born on December 29, 2008.

A breakup would be additionally unfortunate for Levi as he has "Bristol" tattooed on his ring finger.

Digg!

Now can we give the poor kids some privacy so maybe they can work out visitation?

10 months ago no one cared about a Palin, we were too busy looking to save a few cents at the gas bump, remember?

This too shall change, pull the plug on all MSM/PBS/NPR

Halle-damn-lujah for the young Ms. Palin! Having her private life made a public, political tool was bad enough; being railroaded into an ill-advised marriage for ideological expediency was even worse.

Bristol, last month I applauded your honesty in an interview re: the unrealistic expectations of abstinence, and now I applaud your steps toward personal autonomy.

Don't be ANYONE'S tool-- do what's right for yourself and your child.

(And go get some damn condoms, would you, hon'? You don't have to be celibate, but you REALLY don't need to be stupid...)

its ugly head. Many will say, and rightly so leave the kids alone, but they still will not realize or accept the failures of the reglious right. My teenage granddaughter's mother told them "if you are going to be sexually active I will take you to the Dr. and get you the pill, no questions asked, no moralizing. Is she promoting promiscuity, or is she being a pragmatist.

Can't believe that rag is being quoted on Alternet. What's the world coming to?

Back on topic - Could we please leave these kids alone and start looking at more important things? The point has already been made that Palin's support of abstinence only education is bullshit.

And thus ends the Repukelicans/conservatives/christianists arguement for "Traditional Family Values": Senators caught with prostitutes, evangelical preachers doing drugs with male prostitutes, and now a young, single mother. Immorality, homosexuality, and a one-parent family. All we need now is for Anne Coulter to have an abortion.

The whole facade of the marriage was just for show since Sarah Palin was supposedly a "moral" Candidate. Just goes to show you that the hypocrisy of these people is just what it is.

On the other hand, SO WHAT!!!!
Who really cares?

Unfortunately, grandma Sarah can't claim the new baby as her own as well.
