Unemployment figures released by the Labor Department this morning show that 667,000 Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week, while the number of people "remaining on the benefits roll after drawing an initial week of assistance increased by 114,000 to 5.112 million." The Washington Post explains that the "new claims are the most since October 1982, although the labor force has grown by about half since then." Additionally, last week's figures were revised upward by 4,000 to 631,000.

The population in the U.S. was smaller then probably by 100 million. We have part timers, those whose benefits have run out, those who don't qualify to begin with. I seriously question the reporting not to mention the need for these massive layoffs to begin with. The great bubble on the way up was grossly exaggerated. The reverse is just as full of air. I'm not convinced that some of these companies could prove the need to let so many people go if they were required to justify their actions. Forget Wall St. and the banks. Where the hell is all the company money. Offshore? I know there's alot going on but these numbers deserve a closer look. I simply don't believe that all this is necessary. Thanks, ANNA
