Rachel Weiner of the Huffington Post has New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg's full statement concerning his withdrawal of his nomination to serve as commerce secretary:

I want to thank the president for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as secretary of commerce. This was a great honor, and I had felt that I could bring some views and ideas that would assist him in governing during this difficult time. I especially admire his willingness to reach across the aisle.

However, it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me, as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately, we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy.

Obviously, the president requires a team that is fully supportive of all his initiatives.

I greatly admire President Obama and know our country will benefit from his leadership, but at this time I must withdraw my name from consideration for this position.

As we move forward, I expect there will be many issues and initiatives where I can and will work to assure the success of the president's proposals. This will certainly be a goal of mine.

Kathy and I also want to specifically thank Gov. Lynch and Bonnie Newman for their friendship and assistance during this period. In addition, we wish to thank all the people, especially in New Hampshire, who have been so kind and generous in their supportive comments.

As a further matter of clarification, nothing about the vetting process played any role in this decision. I will continue to represent the people of New Hampshire in the United States Senate.

There's no way that Senator Gregg just now decided his differences with Obama over the stimulus bill are irreconcilable. What's really going on?

Yes! I'm a little concerned about moving the Census from the Department of Commerce, since I don't understand the ramifications, but I really didn't think Gregg was a good choice. If he's looking for a Republican, what about Lincoln Chaffee (sp?)?

The census issue is a big deal. I don't buy the stim plan as a reason. I think the power grab by Obama was just too much to be a part of.

He was also embarrassed today, again, when he announced that Caterpillar said it would be able to hire some people back if the stim plan was approved. The CEO of Cat came out and said not exactly..they'd probably still have to fire more before they'd be in a position to hire anyone back!

I'll give him credit for at least being honest enough to withdraw.

Uncle Tombama's delusions

Obama's delusional embrace of bipartisanship will be his undoing. Both parties are equally corrupt and by continuing to reach out to bluedog Dems or brown shirt Republicans, Obama's nascent presidency will fizzle.

Once it becomes clear that TARP 2 is merely a continuation of the bankster's heist and the stimulus plan an abject failure in its alleged effort to rescue a moribund economy, perhaps Obama will abandon the status quo quislings he's surrounded himself with. Or, more likely, he will continue to pursue his uninspired and doomed policies until most of us crawling in the gutter watching corporate jets flying above us on their way to taxpayer funded junkets to Vegas.

Gregg couldn't be Trusted with the Census-Good Riddance

I'd like to thank those in the Repug leadership who strong armed Gregg out of his appointment. Not only did they prove our point Repugs have no interest in bipartisan solutions- but spared US a misconstrued census which would no dopubt lead to more Redistricitng in favor of the ever dwindling Repug citizenship. Perhaps now the WH can return the census to the Commerce Dept.The Dept Gregg wanted dismantled anyway.
the Repugs keep handling US political gifts everytime they open their mouths (or their gas bag blow horns)
Repugs Create Jobs? When?
Repugs Fiscally conservative? When?
Repugs as Patriots? considering how quickly they ran US into the Ground- who the hell buys that BS anymore.
Republicans like Arnold & Crist will fair much better than those like Cantor or Corker in the future.In fact perhaps Arnold and Crist should try to save face (and their careers) by just changing parties- Our 'Tent' is bigger, better organized, More sound minded and actually LOVE this country AND All her people.
Kinda fun to watch the Repugs Implode!

I say good ridence to Judd . I think you should NEVER appoint a man to Head a Department he has advocated abolishing .

There was probably quite an arguement over how to conduct the Census . It is just like the voters rolls the Republican GOAL is to count as few of the poor and Homeless as possible .
There was I'm sure a lot heat concerning counting of Illegals .Perhaps the Republicans will agree to a compromise treat them like we did Slaves : they count but not as whole person

The Reason for Gregg's Withdrawal: Republican party politics as usual
Posted by: gregii on Feb 13, 2009 9:01 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
These are the reasons for Gregg’s withdrawal:
1. The Republican party leadership orders their priorities with the perceived needs of their party ahead of the needs of our country;
· Returning to power ASAP being the most important perceived need of Republican party leadership;
2. The Republicans are dedicating the next four years (in two year increments) to a PR war aimed at convincing the American people that:
· Our National Economic Perfect Storm was caused by Democrats;
· The Recovery Plan is the ill conceived product of Democrats - and specifically Obama;
· The “Democratic party” Recovery Plan will not work;
· Then, the Democratic Recovery Plan is not working;
· The Democrats and Obama are failures;
· Only Republicans know fiscal responsibility and can lead us out of the storm;
· No Republicans are involved in the Recovery Plan;
3. Not vacating another Republican seat in the Senate;
· This risks contributing to a Democratically controlled Senate;

This projection was not informed by insider knowledge of current Republican strategists. It is based upon a lifetime of observing Republican party strategy. They have been consistent in waging the moral equivalent of war against the Democrats using misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda in the National media and from church pulpits.

What an irony! The Republicans helping Obama clean up his cabinet. I only hope that Obama understands by this point in time that there is not nor will there be anything remotely resembling cooperation or bipartisanship with these assholes in the Republican party.

They as a group refuse to take any responsibility for the abject failure of their economic or governing philosophy and the policies implemented as a result, and are standing united in the obstructionism of all attempts to solve the problems they created. This is most remarkable chutzpah. This party, whose members figuratively fart The Star Spangled Banner at every conceivable opportunity, doesn't give a shit about the people of this country. If it was Obama's intention to demonstrate that to the citizenry, he has certainly succeeded.

The stimulus package has been watered down in favor of the wealthy as usual, nicely aligned with the Republican commitment to Reaganomics, a philosophy which has never worked for the average citizen and never will, though it has always worked for the oligarchy that maintains seemingly almost absolute power over this nation and will do anything to continue their rule. The ruin and death of this nation is apparently preferable to ceding any voice in governing the United States to the people.

Obama almost out faked them. If a republican headed the census they couldn't

claim that the democrats cheated on the census. The republicans cheated in Florida and then in Ohio. They just presume everybody is like themselves. They know they cheat. They just presume you do. The good news is that the radical right can now claim, falsely, that the census was fixed.

If you don't send enough census takers to minority neighborhoods, they don't show up on the census. If they are not there, they don't get a member of the house of representatives. Its a way of fixing elections. Obama was just likely to look over his shoulder to see if he was counting those minorities. They sure couldn't have that.
