Why House Republicans Aren't Worth Listening To

This has, all things considered, been a pretty great week for the republic: executive orders increasing government transparency, banning torture, and beginning the process of closing Guantanamo. Obama's also given a nuanced, thoughtful and largely pitch-perfect interview to Al Arabiya as his first public interview, reaching out to the Muslim world in a way, frankly, only he probably could. So, overall, thumbs up, Mr. President!

But: today's been frustrating. Earlier in the week we got word that a provision to allow bankruptcy judges to alter mortgage terms will not be included in the stimulus, partly at the White House's behest. Now, it's unclear whether there was ever much momentum inside the House and Senate leadership to put this in the bill, but the fact that it's not going in is nearly criminal. Almost every single economist and expert I've talked to thinks this is an absolutely necessary step in foreclosure mitigation. No less a flaming Marxist than Richard Berner. It's also very easy to implement, since bankruptcy judges already have the power to alter mortgage terms for non-primary residences. On the policy merits, it's a no brainer. And on top of that, Senate Democrats, apparently in direct negotiations with Citigroup have gotten Citigroup to agree not to oppose the provision (so kind of them!), I don't even see where the political opposition is coming from. Get this done, now.

Then there's the word that at Obama's urging, House Democrats are going to cut birth control funding from the stimulus. Yglesias notes, wisely that this seems to be concession in exchange for nothing. It's not like more Republicans are now going to vote for the bill that weren't before.

But more crucially, I think it's really important to put the House Republican caucus in context. After two successive bloodbaths, the house GOP Caucus is pared down pretty far. Those left standing more or less represent fairly hard core, deep red conservative districts. Rep. Jeb Hensnarling is not going to vote for the stimulus because he just doesn't believe in large government spending to stimulate the economy. That's fine: I imagine many of his constituents feel the same way. So kudos to him for representing his district. But there's no reason, then to take what Hensnarling or Cantor or Boehner say about the stimulus particularly seriously. Ideologically they are disposed to oppose it, and politically they can only win if Obama fails. Believe me, if the situation were reversed, if the Democrats were down to a caucus dominated by Barbara Lee's and Dennis Kucinich's, no one in the GOP nor the MSM would much care about their complaints that a Republican-sponsored bill cut food stamps, or LIHEAP, or otherwise screwed poor people.

And it's not like conservative views won't be represented in the final legislation. It's in the nature of the Senate to give outsize representation to the minority. There are plenty of Republican senators who actually represent states where they will face accountability to the voters.

So, note to the White House: whenever John Boehner shows up on your TV, change the channel.

Digg!

I particularly like this short bit:

"Then there's the word that at Obama's urging, House Democrats are going to cut birth control funding from the stimulus. Yglesias notes, wisely that this seems to be concession in exchange for nothing. It's not like more Republicans are now going to vote for the bill that weren't before."

The Republic Caucus got word from their leadership -- one hour before Obama even showed up on Capitol Hill to talk with them today -- that they were being directed to VOTE AGAINST THE STIMULUS PLAN. Without talking with Obama, or even pretending to try.

Democrats need to WAKE UP! Hayes is absolutely correct. The only Republics left standing in Congress are the most partisan, the most conservative, the most obstructionist. What makes Obama or any Democrat believe they can be magnanimous and really try to work in a bi-partisan manner? IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN.

Anybody else find it strange that we can all figure this out but the Democrats seem to be oblivious?

WTF?

First the democrats are famous for pork..just ask Murtha.. and from all I've heard about this "stimulus" plan it's filled with pork.. Pelosi was millions for contraceptives??? what the hell does that have to do with stimulating the economy?

Bilions more were written into the plan benefitting guess who - ACORN - that most corrupt of political organizations!

And the democrats are giving out billions to their wall street pals who are spending it on office decorations.. of course, the wall street types are the largest contributors to the democrat party.. just ask Obama, him and his Chief of staff are top dogs in that area.

I forgot how bad they can actually be - no wonder they were tossed aside for so long. Give them 2 years of congressional majority and the economy is in the dumper.

Two pieces of good news turned bad in a day. First we get the good news and then the revised edition. The birth control matter is extremely important,it's cheap and would make so many lives better. As would the bankruptcy ruling. And there isn't even any tradeoff. That gives? Why is it so important that babies come into a world that can't support them. This is a major disappointment. Anna

Paul Krugman wrote an article that slapped the Rethugs around for their obfuscation on this bill
Posted by: PaulC on Jan 27, 2009 8:56 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
and he slapped Boehner specifically by name for the line about money for contraceptives. This article was picked up by The Plain Dealer's editorial page, which is unexpected in such a conservative state.

Later in the day Boehner was backpedaling, using the excuse that Obama had paid a visit and they all had a "substantive" dialog.

The Rethugs will act like thugs as long as they are not called on it - but turn on the lights and the roaches go scurrying for cover.

This apparent shift in attitude by the Plain Dealer, if real, is significant. It is a sign of the times, of just how profoundly the country has shifted away from radical free market economics toward Obama's "government that works".

peace,
Paul

HENSNARLING? Really?

There really is a Republican congressman named Hensnarling?

Wow....! I can hardly wait for the emergence of a candidate named Dogclucking; people may just have a hard time keeping a straight face while campaigning for him or her.

I thought it was bad enough that the new Obstructionist-in-Chief in Congress is known as BAY-NER when his name really should be pronounced as "BOH-NER."

The name Cantor I will leave unsmirched and unsmirked-upon since it might tend to offend the religiously and/or the musically inclined.

Have you ever noticed that the Republicans are chickenhawks in Fox(Noise)Furs?

Even the Marketwatch.com site says over population is a potentially serious economic dilemma. Nancy's on the right track and good for her. Check out Paul Farrell's erudite column "Five reasons 'population explosion' is world's biggest economic problem"

I'd request the Repugs to read this important factual piece but they might be too busy getting their talking points from Rush Limbo.

NPR is still trying to be balanced

The other day I heard NPR interviewing Doug Feith - implicated in creating the Niger forgeries. NPR likes John Bolton too. I wrote them, and all of us should write them, to stop interviewing those criminals as if they were ligitimate authorities on democracy. It's not enough to change channels - we have to make it difficult for them to be heard. We have to marginalize them so far out that they can never get back into power. We have to notify the channels and stations that we will boycott programs on which they appear. We have to notify advertisers - if there are any left - that we will not buy their products if programs they advertise on feature neocons. Publishers should learn we won't buy their books and so on.

We voted for change and all we got it more of the same. Will we ever get rid of these damned crooks who do not give a shit about anything or anyone except for lining their pockets? For Christ's sakes, their policies steered the trains right into this head on collision....and they are still running the show. They are still shoving their Reich wing agenda down our throats when it was them who got us into this mess. Will the Dems ever grow any balls? It appears everyone in Washington is absent of morals and conscience.

Boner and his buddies are complete assholes. Why anyone would support him is beyond me. I guess they love being poor and unemplyed...forced to have more starving kids they can't afford, love being homeless, hungry and ill. When will people wake up to these scum of the earth thugs? Didn't we reject their policies and oppression in the voting booths last Novemeber, yet they are still yielding all the power and running the show, completely collapsing this country. n We, the poor are the majority now, we the jobless, the hungry, the sick, the improverished. We should be demanding all of these people to do the right thing.

They are doing this to Obama to ensure he fails, that the Dems fail so they can guarantee a Rethug President in 2012...they can say "see, the Dems destroyed the country, not us, now we can save you." BS

MSM is still playing to their Reich wing base too reporting nothing but lies and propaganda despite Obama's mandate...I hope when they crawl/slither up the hill calling to congress for bailouts, they get kicked to the curb...

Democrat Politicians Are Just as Corrupt as Republicans - Get Real
Posted by: colleenwhalen on Jan 28, 2009 9:37 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
We don't have a "two party system".

We have a One Party System, the "Republicrats".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Joe Lieberman are Democrats - but crypto-fascist to the point they are a little to the right of Attila the Hun.

Back in the 1980's with the rise of globalization and Regan Era union busting, the Democrat Party morphed into the Republican Party. The Clinton's did more to bust organized labor in the 1990's by passing NAFTA and CAFTA in mid-2000 than ANY Republican in history.

Many Democrat politicans are anti-labor, anti reproductive freedom and totally pandering to transnational corporate cartels.

Major corporations donate HUGE election campaign PAC funding to BOTH Democrat and Republican politicans running against eachother in the same elections. That way, irregardless of what politican wins the election - the legislator is bought and sold to corporate interests.

Bretton Woods organizations, Bildenburg Group, WTO, corporate mafia - they work concurrently with Republican AND Democrat politicians.

Why or why is Alternet picking on just Republicans?

I'm 54 and remember the glory days of the Democrat Party way back in the late 1950's, 1960's and 1970's.....way back when my grandparents were FDR New Deal'ers - the Democrat Party STOOD for something.

No longer is the Democrat Party the advocate for working class, middle class workers, women, minorities, disabled, seniors, kids, underclass, gay/lesbians......the Democrat Party exists for one thing only - to defend the interests of transnational corporate cartels.

I switched my voters registration from Democrat to "Decline to State" and became an Independent voter back in 2000 Presidential election when that fuckwit John Kerry, threw in the towel and conceeded to Bush without even a whimper of protest - despite horrendous and egregious rampant election fraud in Ohio.

Hundreds of thousands of black voters were turned away from precincts, not allowed to vote in Ohio 2004 presidental race. Zillions of black voters tossed off Voters Registaion polls in Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2000.....at least Al Gore fought like a tiger, taking it up to Supreme Court protesting election fraud. John Kerry didn't even give one itty bitty peep of protest about Ohio election fraud.

I think Kerry deliberately ran a crappy campaign to help re-elect Bush. They came from same DNA gene pool - East Coast Establishment, Choate prep school, Yale, ruling class, descendents of old New England Yankee families - same school tie, Skull and Bones.

85% of Congress/Senate comprised of white, male, Ivy League college graduates - once in awhile a few women, minorities or working class politicans get elected to Washington, D.C.

At the local level - a politican can stay "honest" - by the time they get farther than Mayor, City Council, County Board of Supervisors - but it's impossible to get elected to State Senate/Assembly and federal office without corruption - Faustian Deal, sell your soul.

If TV networks and major media offered FREE advertising for political campaigns as a public service it would clear up 80% of corruption in government. By being forced to whore themselves to big corporations - prostituting for PAC campaign money - needed to pay enormous advertising costs to run campaign.........this is how politicans get corrupted.

Some European nations do this - free advertising for politicans with EQUAL TIME.

But people like Kissinger are on the board of directors of TV networks - and crypto-fascist Rupert Murdoch owns major media outlets - so I doubt this is going to happen anytime soon.

I have been saying for the last 2 year's that the first thing the GOP need's to do is to remove Boner from his powerful position and replace him with anyone that can think in term's and idea's that fit 2009.
All GOPher's like him are still with the mindset that if you say something loud enough and long enough, they will believe you. Yes there are those that will believe him not matter what he say's My father-in-law still thinks President Obama is Muslim.
I know there has got to be someone in the GOP that know's the effect of gravity but they need to understand that it does not pertain to human thought and decision making.
Will someone please tell him and his Crainial Clones that we have a very large financial problem right now and that he need's to at least put the American people ahead of the corperate dollars he is trying to appease.

I have to confess to being impressed by House Republican chutzpah. After a president whose economic policy agenda was defined by huge tax cuts led the country into an financial cataclysm, their only substantive proposal for fixing the mess is more of the same? There's a reason why the Democrats have dominated the last two Congressional elections, and you're looking right at it.

Now that the Republicans have rejected a bill that was specifically tailored to consider their interests, you should tell them, "We have attempted to formulate a bill that would be acceptable to you and you have rejected our best efforts, instead demanding even greater consideration of your views. Therefore, we have crafted one that is more in line with the desires of the American people, who elected us to serve them. In the future, please know that we will always atempt to work with you, but we will not place your partisan concerns above those of the public we serve".

Then remove the unwaranted tax cuts, place a greater emphasis on infrastructure spending and get this stimulus package moving.

Since Reagan became the first modern rightwinger Republican Doofus to occupy the White House, having been sold by the ultra-rightwing fatcats to the ever-present Dupes, evangelical airheads, and assorted vacuities, the Country has been on the road to ruin and divisiveness.

All of these pitiful Red Stater characters supporting this crowd are dedicated to the scoundrels at Fox Newstwister Channel and to the bloviating mediocrities dominating squawk radio led by Limbaugh and his limbaloney. Having been worked into a mindless frenzy, out they come with flags waving and enthisastic cheering against themselves. The Country has been going down the tubes ever since, especially marked by the eight years of gross ignorance of Puppet Bush and his cast of mediocre scumballs. We need to get used to the ongoing divisiveness in the Country which will, to the delight of the upper 5% and especially the .1 of 1% of the very top of the economic ladder, continue unabated while the great sea of ordinary Americans struggle to survive the plunder of the fatcats.

The stimulus package was not the result of Obama caving to Rep rather the consequence of economic advisers culled from the elite who led us here. Sommers, Geitner, Ruben, et al...all supply sidersiders, anti labor, World Bank "free trade"ers.
Heavy on corporate tax beaks, maintaining Bush tax policy for the wealthy, light on infrastructure and education and middle class breaks. THIS IS THE BEST OBAMA COULD COME UP WITH? The economists who for saw this, Robbie Batra, Krugman, Steiglist...get them in the loop. Stop listening to these failed lobbyists for the wealthy.

I haven't watched/read mainstream media news for years. In fact, I doubt I will EVER buy another TV. Since having to put up with the GREEDY SIDE OF THESE "BLOW-VIATORS" during the past election season, I have gotten really good at shutting them off, if possible, or I take ME away from having to listen to them. They say absolutely NOTHING I am interested in so, since their mantra never changes, this action is a no-brainer! Now I just wish the Democrats would do something similar, since THEY seem to be the ones most influenced by the closed-brain set. WHAT can we do to get the Democrats to realize they just look weaker every time they try to appease these WEALTHY INGRATES whose only purpose in Congress is to ROB THE AMERICAN PEOPLE BLIND. They show by their actions all the time what they really think of the American people, i.e., slaves to their own empire building schemes. I think I should start calling them the 'Me-Me's', a moniker mostly used for people suffering from the psychological problem called NARCISSISM!

WHY NOT "FOLLOW ALL THE $$$"?

Contrary to any and all yah yah about private CEO salaries…the business of private salaries is NOT the business of government.
This is not socialist Europe (yet).

This is simply a deliberate diversion to avoid addressing the governmental corruption issues…so I ask only a few questions.

1…Why were (democrats) Franklin Raines and Jamie Gorelick et al allowed to loot Fannie and Freddie and leave with tens of personal millions?
2…Why is there no public investigation of congressmen-woman connected to financial institutions getting $$$?
3…Why are congressmen (like Breaux and Lott) allowed to be “lobbyists” right after retiring instead of a 5 year sit-out rule?
4…Why were two Obama nominees not vetted and dropped for failing to pay taxes? (one for 4 years)…and these guys are entrusted with billions in an administration? These are democrats, the Party of taxaphiles, the “most ethical” baloney Party…”do what I say, not what I do”.

When I hear the media dig into these and actually do real journalism…then and only then will trashing private salaries have any credibility.
Well, I am waiting…but never forgetting.
