Israel Admits Troops May Have Used White Phosphorus Shells

After weeks of denying that they had used white phosphorus in heavily-populated areas of Gaza, the IDF has admitted that Israeli forces may have used the napalm-like chemical in violation of both international law and the Israeli military's own policy. The Guardian reports:

According to senior IDF officers, quoted today in the Ha'aretz newspaper, the Israeli military made use of two different types of phosphorus munitions.

The first, they insisted, was contained in 155mm artillery shells, and contained "almost no phosphorus" except for a trace to ignite the smoke screen.

The second munitions, at the centre of the inquiry by Col Alkalai, are standard phosphorus shells – both 88mm and 120mm – fired from mortars.

About 200 of these shells were fired during Israel's Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, and of these – say the IDF – 180 were fired on Hamas fighters and rocket launch crews in northern Gaza.

Alkalai is investigating the circumstances in which the remaining 20 shells were fired, amid compelling evidence on the ground that phosphorus munitions were involved in the attack on a UN warehouse and a UN school.

...

The use of phosphorus as an incendiary weapon as it now appears to have been used against Hamas fighters – as opposed to a smoke screen – is covered by the Convention of Certain Conventional Weapons to which Israel in not a signatory.

However, Israel also is obliged under the Geneva Conventions and customary international humanitarian law to give due care to protecting the civilian population when deciding on appropriate military targeting and response to hostile fire, particularly in heavily built up areas with a strict prohibition on the use of indiscriminate force.

Amnesty International, which issued a statement yesterday accusing Israel of war crimes, reports on the effects of white phosphorus on the human body:

The team ... visited the Shifa hospital, Gaza's main hospital, where they spoke to medical staff about the challenges of dealing with phosphorus burns and other injuries. The head of the burns unit told the team that at first, they had not known that they were dealing with injuries caused by white phosphorus. He described unusual orange burns which would become deeper with an offensive odour. After several hours smoke would start coming from the wound.

"We had a child of three years with a head injury. After three hours we changed the dressing and saw smoke coming out of the wound. We opened the wound and brought out this wedge. We had not seen it before. Later on, some colleagues, doctors from Egypt and Norway, were able to enter Gaza and told us that this was white phosphorus," said the doctor

"We noticed various things about this: the burn does not heal; the phosphorus may remain inside the body and goes on burning there, and the general condition of the patient deteriorates – normally with 10-15 percent burns you would expect a cure, now many such patients die."

Other strange injuries were caused by unusual weapons (possibly including Deep Inert metal Explosive – DIME weapons) which doctors did not know how to deal with. "We had eight amputations on one day – normally, the patients should all have lived, but they all died. We don't understand it," one doctor told the team.

Funny how israel is never a signatory to any of the treaties it knows it will violate . Like the nonproliferation treaty but we can get upset at Iran for even thinking about having a nuke . On that score remember the guy who really controls everything is the Ayatollah Kohemeni who is on record against the use of atomic weapons

admits to this crime.

Unfortunately, I don't see that anything will happen due to these admissions. Perhaps the rest of the world will have the balls the US doesn't and push through war crimes trials.

They used it, it was there for all the world to see. We need to stop funding these war criminals and psychopaths. it is nice that there is a cease fire, it gives Israel a chance to re-arm and re-equip, same as Hamas.

January 5, 2009 Israeli military spokesman: “We categorically deny the use of white phosphorus”

January 8, 2009 Major Avital Leibovich, military spokeswoman: “This is what we call a quiet shell: it is empty, it has no explosives and no white phosphorus. There is nothing inside it. We shoot it to mark the target before we launch a real shell. “We launch two or three of the quiet shells which are empty so that the real shells will be accurate. It’s not for killing people”

January 14 Gabi Ashkenazi, the Israel Defence Forces chief of staff: “The IDF acts only in accordance with what is permitted by international law and does not use white phosphorus”

January 21 Major-General Amir Eshel, the army’s head of strategic planning: “It is the most nonlethal kind of weapon we used. I don't see any issue with that”

Anyone who saw the bombs (furnished by the U.S.A.) fired white phosphorus into Gaza and unless you are blind you could see the white plumes going toward the ground. That was the phosphorus. The Israelis have treated Gaza like the Warsaw Ghetto for years and won't stop till real Americans raise enough hell to cut off the billions of dollars in subsidies they get while we are near poverty ourselves.

From what I've read there's no mistaking a wound caused by white phosphorous. The U.S. used it in Iraq early on. It's interesting how many agreements regarding weapons not signed by the U.S. are coincidently not signed by Israel either. Cluster bombs, land mines. That might all change. There's a new sheriff in town. A real nice guy, but no nonsense. ANNA

is not exactly an admission of anything. Anyone waiting for the Israeli military to categorically admit to committing war crimes better not hold their breath.

The hair splitting here is incredible. It is not a "war crime" to cut some kid, who has been declared "collatreral damage" by some official somebody somewhere, in half with hundreds of bomb fragments, but certain other methods of killing children and non-combatants are okay. The debate over white phosphorous obscures and distracts from the actual moral issue. Israel has become a rogue state (perhaps it always was, having sprung from terrorist movements). With all the blather currntly about non-state terrorism, Israel's actions should be re-focusing the world's attention on State Terrorism.
