Bush Drops Fake Cowboy Shtick

Posted by Cenk Uygur, Huffington Post at 4:12 PM on January 16, 2009.

Why does the press think its their job became to reinforce the fake images and storylines of politicians rather than to challenge them?

George Bush bought his "ranch" down in Crawford in 1999 shortly before he started running for president. And now that he's done with politics, he is moving out of there as soon as he possibly can. The Bushes have bought a new home in a tony neighborhood (and until recently a whites-only community) in Dallas. So, what happened to retiring down to the ranch?

Well, it's what most of us suspected -- all total bullshit. He was never a cowboy. That ranch had nothing on it. No cows, no farming, just a lot of bullshit brush that Bush pretended to clear (for what fucking purpose?). The ranch was always a political gimmick. It was purchased so that Bush could play the role of the Texas cowboy when in fact he has always been the Andover cheerleader.

So, that pisses me off a little bit. And his brazen abandonment of the ranch as soon as he is out of office just throws it in everyone's face, as if he's saying, "You didn't really believe all that cowboy bullshit, did you? You weren't that stupid, were you?"

But what pisses me off a lot more is how the press never told the American people the truth. Now, it might seem like a small thing, in light of all the horrors of the Bush administration and how the press hardly challenged him on any of it. But it is truly indicative, and it did matter when it counted -- during the elections.

I don't know why the press feels the need to be so credulous, especially when it comes to Republican candidates. Fred Thompson has this fake red truck he uses whenever he campaigns for office. He instantly puts it away when he's done with that shtick. Why doesn't the press mock him whenever he gets in that stupid red truck that he normally wouldn't be caught dead in? Why did they never challenge Bush on his fake cowboy persona? Why didn't they ask him -- hey, what the fuck is this ranch for? And isn't it convenient you bought it right before the election?

Why the hell has our press gotten so timid? And when did they think their job became to reinforce the fake images and storylines of politicians rather than to challenge them? It's like they're playing their role in this scripted movie. It's almost as if they're being paid to go along with the fraud. The man grew up in a very exclusive, private boarding school in Connecticut. He was a snotty nosed cheerleader. His grandfather was a United States Senator and his father was the President of the United States of America. He was possibly the most privileged man in America. And the press helped to sell the American people on a line of bullshit about how he was a simple cowboy from a ranch down in Crawford. And it helped to get him elected!

That should be a stain on every reporter who covered him for the rest of their lives.

Digg!

and why the fuck does this matter now?...seems an irrelevant rant...

but to answer your questions: the cowboy shtick played well in middle america...they 1. believed the cowboy bullshit and 2. ARE that stupid. i spent most of bush's two terms living in oklahoma while i was there i attempted to correct people's impressions of georgie to no avail...they believed the georgie is a fundamentalist christian bullshit, too.

we KNEW WITHOUT A DOUBT this was all part of the "Bush Dog & Pony Show."

Before Bush bought his "Western White House" it was a chicken farm. That's right. Chickens.

Oh, the irony!

Absolutely true. NPR has a great show called "On the Media" where I heard a little of Bush's debate when he ran for governor. He didn't sound anything like he was when he ran for President. Just another BS attempt to look like a combination John Wayne/Ronald Reagan.

It's part of the double standard of the press

A Democrat that tried to pull that deceitful stuff about "where you're from" would have been outed immediately.

The Bushes and bin Ladens are long-time family friends. Pappy was having lunch with a bin Laden when the Twin Towers were hit. And yet it was Obama's brief board-sharing with Ayers that the press touted as "palling around with terrorists?" Give me a break.

The press practices a huge double-standard.

Before Bush ran for president, he gutted the educational system and public services in Texas (and they are still paying the price.) You saw No Child Left Behind and the dismantling of environmental and labor regulations. Now that Texas misery finally has a little company hopefully the mess will be cleaned up.

I've always thought it strange that W is the only member of the family with a Texan drawl. Children often have different accents from their parents, but siblings? And a guy with a ranch who doesn't know how to ride a horse?

Bush's religion is just as strange. A devout fundamentalist who rarely attends church and doesn't tithe?

He's like his mother, whose grandmotherly public persona hides a vicious, vindictive old alcoholic.

I Know 'Cowboys' and W ain't no cowboy.
If you want to pick out a 'cowboy' check out his ass and his jeans.
Jeans are tight and so are their asses, along with the press down the front.Their boots are full of dirt or shit and their jackets are tattered and worn.
When they are faced with a problem they don't rush in, but figure out the safest way to resolve it, for themselves, their help and the effected. 'Cowboys' are not reckless, just brave. They are compassionate, but realistic. They know when to 'pull out all the stops' and when to just stop. Cowboys don't take vacation, nor end their day just because of the time.
Cowboys are Admirable, Something Bush has never been.Cowboys are National heros, W has been national Villian.

It's interesting how Republicans from privileged backgrounds get a free pass from the media when they pretend to be just like ordinary folks.

John Kerry attempts to do the same thing during the '04 campaign when he put on a hunting outfit for a photo op, and was roundly ridiculed for doing it. Bush comes from the exact same privileged background. Both were born with silver spoons in their mouths. Both went to the same elite Ivy League college, where both became members of the same elite secret society. Yet it was Kerry who was ridiculed for attempting to come off as an average Joe.

Most Americans could be forgiven if they believe that W. grew up riding horses on a ranch, rather than riding around in the family limo, because the mass media never called him on his rancher PR ploy.

Bush not only had no cows on his "ranch," he also had no horses.

When he visited Vincente Fox in Mexico, Fox suggested they do some horseback riding. Bush refused, causing Fox to believe he was afraid of horses!

"Why the hell has our press gotten so timid?"

Who in hell do you think OWNS the press? The same Wall Street Wizards and corporations with defense divisions that are part of a "shadow government" behind the fake government we are allowed to see (General Electric's ownership of NBC is just one example). You know, the "military-industrial (now add "media") complex" that Dwight Eisenhower was so worried about.

And don't forget the direct intimidation by BushCo: the outing of Valerie Plame, the anthrax scare that targeted Tom Daschle and Patrick Lahey (and likely other members of congress), the phony-balony prosecution, PERsecution, of Governor Siegelman, and on and on.

It's no mystery why the press has been so timid. But, now that Obama is in office, a president that corporate America and the "powers behind the throne" might have reason to fear, just watch how quickly the press recovers its backbone, how often they pat themselves on the back for it – and, after the honeymoon is over, how often they go after Obama.

It's been said that the best thing that a person can have is a well-functioning Crap Detector. Amen!

The American people as much as the media, are resonsible for this moron being allowed to pretend to be President (he was NOT elected) and the Democratic Party failed its responsibility to point out the delusions over most of the past 8 years. Unfortunately, very few had the courage to speak the truth. The media, however, is the last defense against mass psychosis and the corporate ownership of the "news" bureaus (which take-over was begun under Ronald Reagan) pulled this safety plug.

Solution: return to regulation pre-Reagan. It's a simple fix.

...that the mainstream Amerikkkan press will ever do honest, progressive reporting since the Murdocinan take over is smoking some of Shrubs brush. Mainstream media are corporate whores for the powers that be...

This is one reason the written press is having hard times even giving away its newspapers. As far as watching CNN, CBS, 24/7 news etc., it has become a waste of time and is just food for the dittoheads and brain dead.

If were not for the internet, I doubt we could even find truth in any form. It will not be long before the Murdocks find a way to control it too.

As far as this Shrub story about him clearing shrub, you would have to believe in Invisible Friends to still find any truth in this charade.

News?

Cenk - when I saw the article's author, I checked to see if Meet the Bloggers is back in production, and a rerun is up on the site. I rely on you and the Brave New Films-associated groups for news. After Oscar Grant's murder, I flipped past the local tv station where I used to get good local news. I heard guys in masks jumping on a burning police car called demonstrators and flipped right past, then hit my computer and emailed them my fury at inciting more of the same behavior with such inflammatory language.

The same announcer did a later program where he was really thoughtful - my guess is that others complained as well. Why was this effective? Because it's one of the few local stations not terribly difficult to contact. Much of our conventional media (papers and broadast media) have a glitzy net presence - but most do NOT make it easy to contact them.

So - don't give up the net the way we did the airwaves, or democracy in this country is dead.

Little George A Fake

I have a real serious question. As a senior, living in midwest Wisconsin, I knew from day one that the Vietnam War would be a total disaster. And the Iraqi War.... Oh my god, we are doing it again? And from the very first moment I saw little George... all I could think of was, he is a total fake. Now if I could see all of this, what the hell is going on with all the others that Bush/Cheney has led to slaughter the past eight years... and they followed, the press followed.... Why did this happen? I am in saddened awe, trying to take a second breath. Why are there so many people that can not see anything that is so concrete...nor between two lines?

The media in this country should be charged with treason for all the covering they have done for this shyster administration!

I agree with JonA that it was obvious from the beginning that Bush was as phony as a $3 bill. If it wasn't obvious from the start, one would think that someone in the media would have asked questions about Bush sawing on the same log on the same ditch for 8 yrs with that little sissy chain saw!!

Horses, cows..........surely yee jest? Bushie was scared schittless of animals. Appropriately that 'ranchette' was previously a pig farm!

Heck he didn't even know how to hold the poor little dog who was forced to live with that fool for 8 long years. If you ever paid any attention to that little dog, you could have seen that he was scared of Bush, which tells me that he was probably abusing that defenseless little animal.

Charemor1 said, "only girly men are cheerleaders"! Yep and that brings to mind the rumors about the gay george bush! I have a picture of him from a newspaper clipping, hugging his long time close buddy, Victor Ashe. I'm betting that Laura never saw such a dreamy look on his face when he hugged her!!
http://poland.indymedia.org/pl/2004/09/9014.shtml

And don't forget the male prostitute, posing as a journalist. There are pictures of Bush hugging him too and massaging his head! Jeff Gannon probably earned his keep at the White House!

And that phony SOB gives a farewell speech blaming everyone and everyone for all that had been a "mistake" during his two fraudulent terms.
Mistake my arse! These crooks did exactly what they planned to do but they fully expected to be out of office before the bottom fell out.

The whole time our illustrious media was just repeating whatever was handed to them by Karl Rove, Dana Perino, etc.

THREE MORE DAYS........PLEASE HURRY!

It seems to me that a great many Americans PREFER "fake". Denial is so prevalent in our culture that it has become more comfortable to live in la-la land. The media contributes to this, but it's really about people NOT wanting to accept reality. So it goes.
