Dick Cheney Shows Off His Mastery of Lying

Watching Dick Cheney's latest "exit interview" with PBS's Jim Lehrer last night, it was hard not to marvel at the man's shameless, almost pathological, dishonesty. It was like seeing a master criminal at work -- you're offended by the conduct, but almost impressed by the skill.

In an exit interview with PBS's Jim Lehrer for the "NewsHour" airing tonight, Vice President Cheney repeats claims that Saddam Hussein worked with al-Qaeda. Asked if he made any mistakes in his eight years as V.P., Cheney only mentions underestimating the psychological harm Saddam had done to his own people. He said his administration bore no blame for the economic problem: "I think we had good economic policies, especially in the early years." And the terror threat was inherited because of the poor handling by previous presidents.

On polls showing he is overwhelmingly unpopular among the American people: "I don't buy that."

And he shrugged off a critical statement today by a key figure, who used to work under him -- she called the handling of one terror suspect as clear "torture."

I mean, really. What can one say to describe such spectacular mendacity? I could try to fact-check the interview, but when nearly every response to every question is either false or misleading, where does one begin? My friend Blue Girl said, "Not a single word of the interview had any basis in reality," which is about right.

We're talking about a vice president who still wants Americans to believe Saddam Hussein had "a relationship with al Qaeda."

The administration didn't torture; it overestimated the capacity of the Iraqi people; it received bad intelligence; Saddam had "access to weapons of mass destruction"; we "brought down" and "routed" the Taliban; the economic crisis has nothing to do with Bush's policies; Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Democrats are the real culprits; and Joe Lieberman is a great "Democrat."

There's our reality, and there's Dick Cheney's reality. They bear few similarities.

Digg!

Almost, my ass! This man is clearly a sociopath, quite possibly a psychopath, in my totally unqualified opinion. If he is not a liar, a sociopath, a psychopath, or any two or all of these things, we have no use for these words anymore.

He is definitely psychopathic. Bush is a drug abuser with a cruel streak. Both are wastrels.

I hope we never again find such a terrible duo in public office at the same time.

The real story here? The press interviewing him not calling him on his lies at all. Even when they no longer have "access" held over their heads to softpeddle interviews they still do it anyway.

Recently, on President-elect Obama's own web-site, the soon-to-be president answered the question about a special prosecutor by saying Eric Holder, his selection to be our next attorney general, would be the "people's lawyer" and would help Obama decide whether to appoint one. Democrats.com has over 15,000 signatures, so far, but needs more. Please take a moment to sign the petition at democrats.com by requesting that Mr. Holder assign a special prosecutor to investigate, and prosecute, those in the Bush Administration who have committed war crimes and other violations of the Constitution.

After all, the best revenge is getting even. Let's get even.

If you doubt it, watch The Corporation, where the criteria of clinical psychopathy are laid out one by one and analyzed as they apply to the American corporation (which, believe it or not, is an organization that tends to be psychopathic).

Or just read the clinical description taken from Psychiatric Times:

"The killers' characteristics referred to as antisocial personality in the FBI report were as follows: sense of entitlement, unremorseful, apathetic to others, unconscionable, blameful of others, manipulative and conning, affectively cold, disparate understanding of behavior and socially acceptable behavior, disregardful of social obligations, nonconforming to social norms, irresponsible. These killers were not simply persistently antisocial individuals who met DSM-IV criteria for ASPD; they were psychopaths- remorseless predators who use charm, intimidation and, if necessary, impulsive and cold-blooded violence to attain their ends."

Special Prosecutor for Bush/Cheney War Crimes?

"We're talking about a vice president who still wants Americans to believe Saddam Hussein had 'a relationship with al Qaeda.' "

Cheney will be pitching this claim throughout his war crimes trial. He still believes if you tell a lie enough times, and to enough people, it isn't a lie anymore.

Well, it isn't going to work. Make sure it doesn't by taking a few monments and
signing the petition
that will be presented to our new attorney general who, incidentally, said today that waterboarding is torture -- despite what Mr. Cheney thinks (or wants you to think).

Open a bottle of Merlot, and you find Merlot. Open Bush's or Cheney's mouth, and you find lies and delusions. What's new about that?

To ''psychologise'' Cheney is not enough . The fact that scum bags like him and Bush emerge is precisely because of the 'unresolved 'nature of production and exchange . That is an issue of the working clases and the middle classes .
The economic collapse is not due to a group of 'individuals' , rather the evolution of contradictions within the 'free market ' world wide which exploded like a volcano.
The idea that Obama can or will fix it ,is an ILLUSION that you at alternet better get your heads round .
Obama is probably more dangerous than Bush because he will add further confusion , just like Blair and Brown have done here in the UK

When the windfall profits tax was repealed oil was $10 a barrel. After that it started going up. Every time we go to war we blow everything up and then send in companies like 'Only One Bid' Haliburton to charge us 10 times what its worth to rebuild the old outdated utilities that we just blew up. WE HAVE TO BORROW MONEY FROM COUNTRIES LIKE CHINA AND SAUDI ARABIA TO DO THIS (They buy treasury bonds). Then because of a disruption in the oil supply or even a rumor of one the oil price skyrockets helping Haliburton, big oil, and Saudi Arabia 10 times more. This is part of Georgie's Voodoo Economics. Bush has a ROBBER BARON presidency.
The Republicons have bitched for years about welfare, yet it only takes 10% of the federal tax budget while we police other countries at 42% (military). (The Heritage Foundation statistics). Other countries spend a fraction of this. Why isn't this reported on the networks. They leave out the most important news.

Every time I look at Cheney's face, I think of that evil Nazi Dentist in the movie "Marathon Man". He is the spitting image, right down to his glasses. It's probably another one of his ways of 'enhanced interrogation' techs, too.

No, there's our reality, and there's Dick Cheney's and the reality of tens of millions of Americans who accept his interpretation. This isn't Son of Sam sitting alone with his delusions. This is a big club, like a religion. I don't believe that Cheney believes the things that he says, but those tens of millions do. That's a lot of stupid, not to mention an impressive display of the density of immaturity in the American people, to the point of infantilism really. Their response to authoritarian figures is a childish instinct, one which they never seem to outgrow, a sort of non-self-actualization in the extreme.

Furthermore, people with any significant moral stamina, people of any character or integrity, have rejected the Neocons long ago. They are uneasy with any part of it. How could a person be called a good person and not be repulsed by all of this? I rule it out. But tens of millions of Americans seem right at home with these values, which says volumes more about the American people. Their moral development is as stunted as their intellectual and personality development.

People like Bush and Cheney are just the natural result of people like the American people. When Bush and Cheney are gone, those people will still be here . And in four or maybe eight years, they'll be ripe for plucking again. America didn't learn a thing these past eight years. The survival of the Republican Party and it's ability to garner over 40% of the vote attests to that.

Bravo! Osama bin Laden was the sworn enemy of Saddam Hussein and the secular regime of the Baathists in Iraq. Dick Cheney's gang bamboozled the gullible, arrogant and ignorant occupant of the White House, so that Bush actually believed WMD would be found in Iraq, when Cheney knew Saddam had destroyed them in the 1990s. Cheney is lying in order to cover up one of the greatest scams in history (greater by far than the Madoff $50 billion Ponzi scheme).
